Ask a Steelers Fan - The Final Preseason Game

Your Carolina Panthers will be squaring off against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night.  I am sure you might want to know a little bit extra about your opponent so I am bored and willing to field some questions for you.  Also, I am sure that other Steelers fans will come over and answer some too.  If one of you all wants to go over to our blog and post something similar that would be awesome.  The Giants Q&A over at BTSC got up to over 700 comments and the Broncos one was over 400.

Any questions you have I can answer or pretend to answer correctly.  Trash talk is fine as long as you do not get carried away.  Got Ben jokes?  I've heard them, but knock yourself out.

Fire away!

How much do you think we’ll see Ben Roethlisberger on Thursday night?

Thanks

Well it is hard to tell. Our QB situation this off season has been such an odd one. We’ve had 3 guys all trying to get snaps with the first team offense. We cannot give Ben 0 snaps because he won’t be with the team for at least a full month. But if we give him too many we are really hurting our chances to win some of those first four games. So, a complete guess would be we see Ben with 2 series at the most.

Since the 4th preseason game is a showcase for reserves

How much stock do you put in your 2nd string offensive line? I ask because I am personally thrilled about our defense depth at the line this year, and I wonder what level of talent they’ll be facing this Thursday.

Thanks in advance, and I hope for you and your fellow Steelers fans’ sake that Big Ben keeps his head on straight. He’s a hell of a quarterback, in my humble opinion.

2nd string OL

The 2nd string OL looked awful against Denver. Leftwich went 0-4 and that was because he was running for his life on every drop back and if you know Lefty, he cannot run. As a whole I would say they are bad. However, individually a couple of the guys are stepping up. Tony Hills(OT) and Kraig Urbik(C/G), two players many of us had written off our 53 to start camp, are getting better and better every week. Our back up RT, Jon Scott is bad. Ramon Foster a G had some good playing time last year, but I haven’t seen much out of him this year.

Our back-up Center is awful as well, he used to be our starter.

What do you guys think of dennis dixon so far? Who would yall want as starting quarterback untill ben gets back?

by taichong on Aug 31, 2010 9:55 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

This has been the biggest debate all offseason at BTSC

I think (even prior to Sunday) that Leftwich is the better choice. Lefty should start and Dixon should come in as a ‘change of pace’ QB to give the opposing defense a few confusing looks. Also, it makes DCs have to put some effort into scheming for him.

Anyway, about Dixon. I think he is a great athlete and has potential. However, mentally his game is not solid yet. He doesn’t make the greatest decisions and he goes through his progressions slowly or not at all sometimes. That leads him to get tunnel vision occasionally and not look off defenders (resulting in a pick like he threw in Denver). The kid got to take snaps with the 1s Sunday and looked bad. Unfortunately, our OC, who sucks, did not play to his strengths and tried to transform him into a strict pocket passer which he clearly is not.

Rashard Mendenhall seems like the real deal.

I know he was nicked up as a rookie. Do you see him as holding up as a 3 down back for 16 games this year?

by bmoyer on Aug 31, 2010 9:58 AM EDT reply actions

Mendy won't be taking an absurd amount of carries

Mewelde Moore comes in a lot on 3rd downs because he has very good hands. Also, BTSC favorite Isaac Redman has made huge strides since last season and should spell Mendy nicely on occasion. Look out for our ‘pony’ backfield where both Redman and Mendenhall are in. It worked very well against Denver.

Haven't been able to follow lately..

But how is your defense looking this year? I know they are normally the standard for the rest of the league. Are there any issues or questions? and also do you think Troy P. is going to light it up this year or is he on a downward slope?…even if slightly.

In Moore we trust!!!

by UNCMattyt99 on Aug 31, 2010 10:02 AM EDT reply actions

The defense should be good

The only possible issues I see are the CB opposite Ike Taylor and the speed of Farrior and Foote at ILB. Last year, the problem at CB was compounded by many things: a lack of depth, no Troy Polmalu, bad depth behind Troy, etc. This year we have more depth at CB and Troy looks healthy. I was a bit worried about Troy before the Denver game, but he looked top speed, in on ever play Troy. There was one play where he basically threw the TE out of the way to get to the ball carrier.

Not to be confused with the NFL’s Lombardi Trophy the ‘Lombardie trophy’ is awarded each year to the professional athlete who best exemplifies a public restroom pickup line.

Right, because me mispelling lombardi trophy totally discredits the championship accountability of Roethlisberger and the Steelers. I stand corrected. Anywho, just sayin where’s the Stallworth jokes? The Ray Lewis and Adam Jones jokes? I guess people getting shot and killed by drunk driving isn’t funny. But allegedly yet never charged or convicted of throwing yourself at a drunk girl is hilarious apparently.

Agreed

But neither does Big Ben jokes. He might not even play in the game at all. I just don’t understand how this Ben Roethlisberger stuff is worthy of being nailed to a cross. Actually I do though, if he was some bum that hasn’t ever won anything nobody would care. Sporting 2 championship rings with a high probability of getting at least one more before retirement makes him an easy target. That being said I met him at epicenter one night and he is a complete @$$hole. No doubt about that.

As a Steeler fan, you can bring up your issue with it with the Steeler fan who openly said “Got Ben jokes? I’ve heard them, but knock yourself out.”

We only had one person make a crack before you got upset, it wasn’t like everyone here was attacking the guy… and my reference was only to him trying a rather crass pickup line, which from what I’ve read was very refuted.

I’ve heard em all too, and actually some of em are pretty funny. And you should have heard what he said to a female bartender at strike city that night. I wasn’t trying to be jerk, just trying to distiguish the difference between drunken buffoonery off the field and stellar playmaking when it’s gametime. Because dude’s money in the pocket. Outside the pocket too for that matter. Anywya this is a dumb pissing contest that i am guilty of engaging in. Good luck to both teams this season.

I think everyone agrees

Roethlisberger is far from a class act. He’s a borderline elite talent on the field, but off the field he’s an immature punk. To put it in perspective, I’d probably let Matt Moore babysit my daughters. He may have won a Super Bowl, but I wouldn’t let Big Ben shake my hand. I don’t think you’ll find a lot of people on here who will give him any praise for winning super bowls…

Guess we’ll wait and see when a d-bag QB helps bring a championship celebration to uptown to see who all supports him. My bottom line on this whole thing is fans pay money to see the best players their fav team has to win and keep winning. Most folks aren’t in it to judge character flaw in players, they just want to see the team championship parades.

Depends on your principals and what you think is important

Me, personally… I would rather have 53 roles models on my team than 5 Superbowls.

This is why I would so virulently turn down any idea of the Panthers signing a player with any kind of baggage that could bring the organization into disrepute. For other teams, like the Bengals they aren’t concerned about those issues… more power to them.

Seriously, no one is proud of his behavior, including him. You guys have to understand, Pittsburgh loves the Steelers and all that the franchise has stood for to us. No one is making excuses for or defending Ben. The long and short of it all for me is this: If holding his foot to the fire is going to make him a better teammate and person, great. People don’t learn lessons by doing things “right”. It’s the mistakes that make a difference. Hopefully a big difference.

1. Besides bring in Flozell Adams, what have the steelers done to improve an o-line that struggled at times last season? also why did you pick up Adams anyway. a classy organization like yours usaully tries to avoid guys like him

2. Isaac Redman played in last preseasons game correct? if hes the guy im thinking of he looked great last year.

3. Im a duke fan so im wondering what have you heard about Patrick Bailey?

by pantherpride on Aug 31, 2010 10:31 AM EDT reply actions

Answers

1. The biggest thing the Steelers did to improve the OL was draft Maurkice Pouncey. The kid has been an absolute stud so far. He takes leaps and bounds every week at the position and has pushed out a veteran at the spot. If you do not know the Steelers well, that is a big deal. The last rookie to start was Heath Miller in 2005 and the last time a rookie OL started was in 2002 with Kendal Simmons. Anyway, with Adams we had no choice. Colon was our best OL last year and losing him hurt a lot. We had to bite the bullet and take the best OT available to help our team and keep our QB alive.

2. Isaac Redman has made huge strides since last year. I believe he makes the team as the #2 back.

3. Duke? Booooooooo. I am a Terrapin alum. Patrick Bailey isn’t much. A good STer. He doesn’t seem very likely for the final 53

Like Johnny said, never a team to overlook, i think you have a brilliant coach who will put a competitive team on the field no matter what, my only message would be to look after him, its not always the dream run, but you guys could be doing much worse with a different coach

Mike Wallace

This kid is going to have a big year. He is fast as hell and can clearly get deep as seen by his league leading 19.4 ypc last year. So far this season he has looked great in his short and intermediate routes as well. We are asking a lot of him and I have a really strong feeling about him.

Maurkice Pouncey
As I stated above, Pouncey is everything the FO thought he could be when they drafted him. Casey Hampton, a NT who has faced many Centers, said generally you see a C who is either strong and slow or small and quick. However, he has been shocked how both strong and fast Pouncey has shown to been. If OL could ever win awards I think that he would have a good shot at winning offensive RotY

Being a GT alum I'm curious to hear your take on RB Jonathan Dwyer

I’m shocked to hear some of the opinions and feedback coming from Steeler land. I thought for sure this guy was a can’t miss prospect as he has a nice combo of speed and power and some shiftiness. Can’t believe he fell to the 6th round. Is he going to make your roster? What’s been the problem?

Follow Cat Scratch Reader on Twitter and Facebook

by Jaxon on Aug 31, 2010 11:31 AM EDT reply actions

A couple of things

Dwyer came into camp a bit out of shape and then got injured early. While injured, there were reports that he seemed uninterested at practice and did not pay attention much. You would think a rookie who is injured would want to soak in as much information as possible since he cannot be out there.

Prior to the Denver game Dwyer might not have even been on my PS. Now it looks like he has at least put himself in the conversation for the bubble of the 53 man roster. The bad thing for him is that he has looked horrendous in blitz pick up and blocking and has not showed (me at least) anything on STs. As of now, his spot on the roster is dependent on the potential the coaches see in him. Is he valuable enough to keep and have him not contribute immediately? Or do you risk him on waivers? Tough questions that I don’t know the answers too.

No doubt

I think he’ll be a monster. In a year.

Only problem is, we have quite a few viable options at RB, and we can’t have a guy being lazy with the playbook and in practice.

Last year Isaac Redman looked amazing in the pre-season. Trouble was, he was out of shape, and his conditioning sucked. We stashed him on the PS for a year (except for one game he suited up, but never took a snap) and now he looks to be our guaranteed short yardage back.

If Dwyer can clear waivers, look out for this kid later this year or next year. Besides, I think he has to be signed to a teams active roster were he to be signed off waivers. I don’t think he’s shown enough flashes for any team to want him like that.

I love the smell of burnt O-line in the morning!

Yeah, we’ll stash him this year, RB is somewhere we can’t hide somebody. If we keep him and he puts in the work he’ll be great, he’s fast and tough, he needs to get in NFL shape and learn the nuances of the job, we have good RB coaches and good veteran leadership so hopefully he won’t slip throguh the cracks.

Everyone over at BTSC was incredibly high on him when we drafted him. Hopefully he lives up to his ability.

We cannot replace Holmes just by snapping our fingers. He was a great receiver, no doubt. However, I think we have enough options to replace him. We resigned ARE and Wallace has been working heavily on his short and intermediate routes. We also have two very promising young WRs who could fill the Wallace role from last year. Mendenhall and Miller are two great options as well if the other guys are struggling.

My only concern is that Lefty and Dixon cannot do what Ben does and the WRs are going to hurt from that the first 4 games.

You think Jonathan Dwyer makes the 53 man roster?

He was being projected as a mid 3rd round pick, but you guys got him in the 6th (I think). Always thought he was a good back. Kinda reminds me of Mendenhall.

All jokes aside...

What are the Steelers going to do without Ben? I would guess Dixon is starting, but he didn’t exactly look sharp against Denver.

You’ve got to think if they get through the first 4 games at 2-2 you’ve done well. Tampa should be an easy win for most any team, but Atlanta and Baltimore are a different story. If anything, the NFL schedule makers do have a sense of mercy with the bye week falling at week 5 for you.

Dixon was the fan favorite till last Sunday

he didnt really show what was expected of him and to some it looks like he lost his chance to Leftwich, me personally i think he should get one last shot this Thursday. people tend to think Dixon goes through his progressions too slow or has tunnel vision that or just makes bad decisions, and that he runs too much. other than last Sunday i was impressed, he has some good touch on the ball, hes capable of the deep bomb but for some reason avoids it (some sees this as another draw back) i see it as knowing his limits and not trying to force the ball there. Hes also very elusive which is a must behind our O-line, and can turn broken plays into 1st downs. To me his only draw back is he needs to learn, which can easily be fixed

Leftwich was the popular vote by the coaches in favor of him being a veteran and knowing the offense, all are very valuable and needed. much Leftwich has zero mobility in the pocket and behind our O-line could be a big problem. Leftwich has one hell of an arm that can be comparable to anyone of course this is after he sets his feet, and does his long windup with out getting touched. unfortunately the speed of his “fast ball” doesnt turn down whether its from 40 yrds or 5 yrds which makes it difficult for the WR to catch the ball, especially with our RBs and young WRs

Recently Charlie Batch has been talked up as well, im guessing some of this came from Batch’s performance against the scrubs in which he still threw a Int, it wasnt his fault but still why throw it there. Most will say last Sunday didnt have anything to do with their decision and that they have been on his bandwagon the whole time but i find that hard to believe. Batch is a wildy old vet that probably knows the offense better than anyone there and has been there longer too. for his age he can deliver, hes smarter than all 3 QBs combined and has better mobility than Leftwich. but dang it he is just way to old. People say if Favre can do it why not Batch, thats because Favre is superhuman and a freak of nature, Batch is not. Batch’s arm is pretty much shot and cant deliver the long bomb. Id feel like if we named him the starter, Batch would end up being the “virgin” sacrifice to the football gods in exchange for a successful season, then we would be back to square one with the decision, Dixon or Leftwich. sorry Charlie but you have clipboard duty till Ben comes back, then most likely Batch’s days as a Steeler will be over and will be released. with the option of having Batch “on call” if the worst were to happen to our QBs (knock on wood), or Batch will become an assistant QB coach

As an outsider looking in...

I’ve always thought Charlie Batch was the best career backup quarterback of the current era. He’s always been able to fill in without missing a beat. He probably could have started for lesser teams when he was a little younger.

Glad someone noticed Charlie outside of Pittsburgh! Your assessment of him is very accurate. He has been an asset to the Steelers for 13 years… one of those unsung hero types.

(There is much love for Dixon’s potential, however)

true

his time in Pittsburgh has helped alot, and is greatly appreciated and has always been a fan favorite. but he has had little to no reps all season. and a really really dont want Batch to retire because an injury eventually did him in, like i said most likely after he retires he will most likely still be involved with the team

To me the title of Best Career Backup was

between Chuck Batch and Gus Frerotte.

Every time both guys were asked to come in and perform spot duty, they shined. Both Chucky and Gus had 6 game winning streaks in their career.

Mike Wallace

Drafted this guy in my fantasy league. I’m curious to hear your opinion as to whether or not his value takes a hit with Leftwich or Dixon at QB for the first 4-6 games of the season.

you got a steal my friend

think of Wallace as a young Santonio Holmes without the ego and the weed, hes been know as a deep threat that can burn almost any CB in the league and the only way to stop him is have a safety over top, but he has been working his short and medium route running to fill the Holmes role left open, the Steeler have 2 #1s in their WR core

Wallace may see a slight drop off in the first 4 games as we are trying to establish the run game early, but when Wallace does get the ball expect big results

Good to hear

Liked what I saw of him last year. Thought he had potential to be at least the # 2 with Holmes in NY. Just couldn’t decide if he should be one of my fantasy starters with Ben on the sidelines to start the season.

Wallace actually led all NFL receivers

last year with 19.-something yards per catch.

This kid is for real.

If our rookie Sanders, who looks pretty good can overcome a few difficulties and take some of Holmes shorter routes Wallace will be freed up for some more deep routes.

If that happens, the kid will have some monster games.

The 5 catch 150 yrd 2 TD type games. The biggest thing is he has excellent hands and makes big catches like Holmes used to. I think he can beat Holmes production, simply because he has better hands. Holmes was incredibly clutch though, him and Ben thrived in big pressure situations. If we make a playoff run we’ll see how we replace that.

From a Fantasy Buff's perspective

If we start Dixon, I wouldnt play Wallace at all. Dixon doesnt go through reads that well, and if his first read isnt there, he runs. He doesnt have the downfield arm to suit Wallaces speed, plus if he is in the game, calls will be run heavy and more short-throw based

With Leftwich in, I dont expect that gameplan to be much different, however he has the cannon to hit Wallace in stride at 50 yards, which hes already done once this preseason, but that rhythm that Wallace has with Ben isnt there.

Overall his production does take a hit with Lefty or DD at QB, but when Bens back, expect them to get back to last years form. Wallace gets open a lot downfield, so its not outrageous to think he could average between 7-8 points a game for you (depending on your format)

Just curious what the Steelers fans thoughts are on the relationship between our two organizations.

Nope

There is no bad blood there, so I don’t think its bad at all.

What I get sick of is

the last 3 times we played Denver, it was at Mile High. Next time they better play at our house, or there will be a serious, and hate laced E-mail heading to the scheduling guy for the No Fun League.
