Panthers First Cuts: Who Will it Be?
With the addition of OL Tim Duckworth (formerly of the Saints), Monday, the Panthers roster sits at 80 players. Today the cuts start, and the roster needs to get trimmed to 75. Who do you think will be the first to go? I apologize in advance if one of these guys is your cousin, went to your alma mater or shares the same barber, but these are the guys who, in my view, aren't likely to survive the day.
Here's the list of players that I think the cuts will come from:
In the spirit of Jaxon's2009 post on the first roster cuts, here are 9 guys who I think are likely candidates:
#18 - WR - Oliver Young - No catches through three preseason games, and correct me if I'm wrong but I don't even remember seeing him on the field at receiver.
#19 - WR - Dexter Jackson - He's managed a couple preseason receptions, but I can't get the image of him lying on the ground during the Clausen interception out of my brain. He's got speed in spades, but this isn't Oakland.
#26 - RB - Dantrell Savage - Unless I missed something, I didn't see him in at RB even in "garbage time."
#27 - CB - CJ Wilson - This position is just too deep and I think he's already had his chance to make it.
#49 - LB - Sean Ware - If you don't have a LB jersey number in the 50s, you aren't likely to make the team. =)
#62 - G - Ray Hisatake - Too deep at this position and no special teams value at 300 lb.
#68 - DT - Andre Neblett - See Ray Hisatake.
#97 - DE - Hilee Taylor - If you only manage one tackle through three preseason games playing defensive end, you're done.
#77 - G - Andrew Crummey - Someone's got to go at guard. The Panthers wouldn't drop Duckworth a day after signing him, would they? (Talking to you, Jaxon)
Is there anyone that you think should be added or removed from the list?

whoever gets cut i wish them best of luck with finding a team and there continuing there careers in the NFL. We got some talented guys that won’t make the cut.

40 years of watching closely
This is the most talented team I’ve seen…period! 12-4 all day..WE are the rest of the NFL’s worst nitemare, they just don’t see this train coming, nor do most of our fans…PANTHERS RULE! 12-4 EASY!
I dunno about that...
Fastest, without a doubt. Most talented?
There’s an old saying in football that goes something like this. “When you’ve got great depth at every position, you don’t have great talent at any of them.” Basically, if your number ones aren’t that much ahead of your number twos, then maybe they wouldn’t be number ones anywhere else. At Receiver, Fullback and along the offensive line we seem to have that problem. Same with Defensive Tackle. But the defense is playing so well no one will notice that. Once teams scheme for us and work on exploiting our weaknesses, THEN we will find out if it’s for real.
I’m not saying the sky is falling, but I won’t drink the kool-aid yet.
BTW, I think Wilson goes just so he has plenty of time to pick up with another team. Savage, Savage, Taylor, Neblett, and Ware are my other votes. I don’t see us cutting anyone from a unit that we’re worried about in the first round.
I find it easy to be optimistic too Eddie
I’m ready to see this defense when it counts…but I’d rather give the offense the time to get it together. I bet the 1st team O plays the whole first quarter unless they score on their first drive.
Anyone up for a first drive score against the Steelers?

I think your list is spot on Brian
Only changes I see as a possibility are Duckworth for Hisatake and possibly keeping Neblett… not sure who takes his place though

I'd be disappointed if they don't give Sean Ware a long look.
He has elite speed for a linebacker, and could help on special teams. If he’s not getting the transition from college, then fine, let him go, but I just hope they’re giving him a long look.
stuff 'bout stuff.
Darin Gantt's Response:
I figure Thomas Davis (reserve-PUP) and Hilee Taylor (waived-injured) will be 2. RT @bmoyer83 Who do you think will be first 5 to go today?
Yeah...those two make sense
So my picks are Davis, H Taylor, Petrowski and Crummey.
I do feel for these guys though. It might be the end of their opportunity. And to have your job status so visible to the public. It’s got to be tough but hey, if I had their talent I would be trying too.
Wow...I don't even recognize half of those names
I’d go with:
Dantrell Savage (You have to be one amazing athlete to remain on a team as a RB with Double Trouble running the show
Dexter Jackson
Andrew Crummey (I remember him getting beat pretty badly on a few plays this preseason.)
Andre Neblett
Thomas Davis (PUP; easy call here)
Sorry... I have to temper my anger here instead of writing a nasty fanshot.
I can’t stand John Clayton… he’s like Mr. Magoo without a personality. This is his QB rankings:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/preview10/columns/story?columnist=clayton_john&id=5489176
So… Trent Edwards, Josh Freeman and Matt Leinart are better than Matt Moore? Good call there John.
Also love Delhomme as the worst starting QB in the NFL… I guess the Clayton household doesn’t watch the preseason.
Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.
yeah I read that this morning.
his reasoning is basically if he screws up he has Clasuen behind him….I’m not quite sure how that makes him the 2nd worst starting quarterback in the league.

Odd logic in that he rates Vince Young #18, and Matt Moore #32.
He says, "Young isn’t a great thrower, but he finds ways to win. "
About Moore, he says, "He has a 6-2 record as starter, but ….’
Apparently winning games can mean two things, depending how shallow your analysis is.
Just more fuel for Moore’s fire.
Oliver Young would make the 75 man roster.
I think they are trying to sneak him in the Practice Squad.

I was impressed by his performance at SCSU
I saw him play a number of times. I am surprised he isn’t getting a lot of playing time.I guess the coaching staff has a more vested interest in developing the guys that were actually drafted.

Andre Neblett is 2 yrs younger, 3 lbs heavier, and 4" lower to the ground than Nick Hayden.
Hayden has shown nothing in his time with the team, other than the ability to get pushed backward.
To the contrary, Neblett has been very effective in his time on the field in these exhibitions. I’d let Hayden go before Neblett, though either is way down the pecking order at DT.
Hayden has had some good plays this preseason.
I don’t know how he’d hold up against a first team offense though.

WR Dept Chart
CP should take a chapter from the Houston Texans play book and throw the football more. Evenutally, they will burnout a great player like DeAngelo by running the same plays up the middle. “High School Football” . As a wide reciever Steve Smith is entirely overrated! CP has tremendous talent in the WR position; however, they are way under utilized. Sit Claiusen on the bench and put Edwards as second string QB. Now he can thow the ball.
so....
-throw the ball like the texans even though that’s not the way our team is built, and stop using the best RB duo in the league so much.
-smash-mouth, run the ball down their throat, you know what their going to do and still cant stop it is “High School Football”
-Steve Smith whose stats and achievements are undeniable is entirely over rated.
-Sit the most pro ready quarterback to come out of the draft and put in Edwards the passing phenom…..

who is this guy?
Mr. Supersix1, what you have just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

I’ll award you the points! made me laugh out loud in the office! Also, who are the tremendously talented WR that we seem to be under utilizing? If they were on this team, they would be getting open more, making more catches, and there would be no questions as to who in the heck is going to step up and be the #2 WR! maybe those WR’s only reside in his head…
Playing nice is the new cool thing to do.
I heard some high school kids talking about it. Let’s all give in to peer pressure.

when do the cuts have to be made?
by what time today?
I assume midnight, but you know what they say about assumptions...
Last year we knew who the players were by about 1:00PM if that helps.
Steve Reed is reporting on Twitter
Wallace Wright just went on IR ending his season.
Dexter Jackson just got cut.
Oliver Young cut.
Thomas Davis to Reserve/PUP list
Hilee Taylor to IR
Thanks.
I think everyone I listed will be gone by the time we hit 53. I had Marcus Hudson listed also, mainly because he got beat so bad by Cook, but I dropped him off the list to get to 9. A couple of these guys got lucky for an extra week because of Thomas Davis and Wallace Wright. They still haven’t reported what Wright’s injury was – I’d be interested to know.
Shoulder
Apparently, it’s a shoulder injury and that he’ll need surgery on it (I thought it was his arm..?) but hen again all Fox ever said about the injury to begin with was that there were no broken bones. He never said anything about where or what the injury was.
Replay
Yeah, in the replay it looked like it bent at a really nasty angle. The trainer was holding it and he was moving his fingers, but no one’s said for sure what the injury was. Must be bad enough to end his season though obviously.
Either one is very nasty.
Ready for 2010 football already!!!
