Titans vs Panthers: Defense Play-by-Play Summary

Here we go, boys. They are so many 3 and outs, that this will be shortened somewhat, with summaries of individual lineup groups, and outstanding plays.

James, pick me a pic as good as the one you used of Barnidge on Offense. I kinda like the one of Everette Brown sacking Vince Young, with the ball floating in the air.

Let's jump to it --

Series #1:

Q1, Our first of 6 Three and Outs (when a D can pull this off in 13 series, they're dominating), this series featured a starting DL of 95/Charles Johnson, 61/Derek Landri/ 93/Tank Tyler, and 91/Everette Brown. Landri appears to be getting a good look with the 1's, and he's earned it, and played up to it. A one-yd rush was stopped by 55/Dan Connor and 91/Brown; on 2and9, 95/Johnson held that run to another measly yd, and 3and8 was capped by the Sack/Fumble by 91/Brown - lucky for them, the ball bounced into the hands of a Titan lineman, but the play lost 6, so they were (-4 yds) on that series, and the punt parade was underway.

Series#2:

They did keep the ball for 8 plays, but only accumulated 35 yards.

Q1, 7:13, 1and10, Tenn 8. Here we started off with 95/CJohnson and 91/Brown still at DE, but 99/Ed Johnson and 94/Louis Leonard getting their turn at DT. I believe I spotted 92/Eric Norwood sneaking up on the line, and we brought a 5-man rush. QB 10/Vince Young, however, completed a nice pass to his TE 88/Stevens for a 23-yd FD, our S 23/Sherrod Martin making the tackle.

6:36, 1and10, Tenn 31. 95/CJohnson made a nifty spin move, and looked to me like he was being held, but no call was made. Another pass to TE 88/Stevens, but he was brought down by a form tackle from 20/Chris Gamble, gaining only 2.

6:06, 2and8, Tenn 33. 31/Richard Marshall showed blitz outside the RDE, but dropped back at the snap. Their star RB 28/Chris Johnson ran right, but was met by 52/Jon Beason, after a 4 yd gain.

5:25, 3and4, Tenn 37. 10/Young was flushed from the pocket, but managed to run left for a FD. 91/Brown took an inside rush, and couldn't contain the edge. 50/Anderson was slow coming up.

4:41, 1and10, Tenn 47. Now we stiffen. 30/Charles Godfrey flies up from his S spot and sacks Young for a 9 yd loss, with 50/James Anderson also blitzing, and right behind Godfrey.

4:13, 2and19, Tenn 38. With long distance, we sub for our DE's, bringing in 66/Eric Moore and the redoubtable ("that which should be feared or dreaded") 76/Greg Hardy. They attempt a rush to the right with 28/Johnson, but the daylight has been shut out by 55/Connor, who stuffs him for a yd loss.

3:32, 3and20, Tenn 37. We bring only a 3-man rush, and a pass to WR 87/Hawkins gains only 6, 41/Captain Munnerlyn making a fast tackle.

2:57, 4and 14, Tenn 43. They punt. They gain a net third of the field in over 4 minutes, but to no avail.

Series #3:

Here we start with a DL of 95/CJohnson, 61/Landri, 93/Tyler, and 76/Hardy (in for 91/Brown.)

Q1, 1:17, 1and10, Tenn 13. 28/CJ tries a sweep left, but is snuffed by 65/Hardy for the first of his 3 TFL's in the game - the result is (-2) yds.

0:47, 2and12, Tenn 11. A deep pass is attempted, and DPI is called on 31/Marshall. He's beaten on the play, and this is probably the best result. I note that 76/Hardy was pursuing the play, 20 yds downfield, having dropped into coverage at the snap.

0:40, 1and10, Tenn 36. We bring 6 on a blitz, featuring 52/Beason, and the QB Hurry from 76/Hardy causes an incompletion.

0:37. 2and10, Tenn 36. We blitz again, with 50/Anderson - another QB Hurry, but Young gets it to a receiver for no gain, quickly tackled by 31/Marshall.

Q2, 15:00, 3and10, Tenn 36. A pass to 28/CJ is complete, but for only 6 (very good tackle by 20/Gamble. Punt.

Series #4:

We totally dominate their offense in the second quarter, with 5 consecutive 3 and outs.

13:15, 1and10, Tenn 34. They rush 28/CJ 3 straight times, gaining only 7 yds in the process, before punting. We line up 95/CJohnson, 98/Nick Hayden, 68/Andre Neblett, and 91/Brown. Good tackles are made by 68/Neblett on second down, and 30/Godfrey on 3rd. Punt. (Somehow it's more fun to type that word on this thread, than on the Offensive recap.)

Series #5:

Our DL here is 95/CJohnson, 99/Tyler, 94/Leonard, and 76/Hardy.

8:52, 1and10, Tenn 34. They run on first down, but 94/Leonard stuffs it for a 1 yd gain. 2 incomplete passes force another punt

Series #6:

Different DL alignment, same result: we truly look to have replaceable parts to plug in at will. Here it's 95/CJohnson, 99/Tyler, 60/Corvey Irvin, and 66/EMoore. Our DE's dominate this 3 and out.

4:40, 1and10, Tenn 20. They gain 1 on a rush, 95/CJohnson on the hit.

4:07, 2and9, Tenn 21. 95/CJohnson gets a sack, for (-6 yds).

3:25, 3and15, Tenn 15. A give-up rush attempt gains nothing, tackled by 91/Brown, brought in for that play. Punt.

Series #7:

Bringing the first half to a close, this is not a 3 and out - it's a 2 and out.

0:31, 1and10, Tenn 14. (Note how Jason Baker's punts keep them from starting in any good field position.) We show this DL: 95/CJohnson, 61/Landri, 94/Leonard, and 91/Brown. On first down, Young completes a pass in the flat, which goes for an 11 yd gain, 41/Munnerlyn making a weak tackle.

0:23, 1and10, Tenn 25. Another sack by 95/CJohnson (his second in 4 minutes!), for a 1 yd loss, ends the half.

Series #8:

Q3, 13:20, 1and10, Tenn 20. 10/Kerry Collins comes in at QB for the Titans. We show a DL of 95/CJohnson, 93/Tyler, 98/Hayden, and 91/Brown. They rush for 2, with 98/Hayden on the stop, a nice tackle by him in space.

12:50, 2and8, Tenn 22. Offensive Holding sets them back 10.

12:43, 2and18, Tenn 12. They rush for 4.

11:25, 3and14, Tenn 16. We bring only 3, but Collins throws incomplete. Punt again.

Series #9:

They manage to keep the ball for 9 plays, but only net a paltry 14 yds, eventually punting again.

Q3, 8:23, 1and10, Tenn 10. A 5 yd slant pass is complete.

7:45, 2and5, Yenn 15. A rush gains another 5, and a rare FD.

7:25, 1and10, Tenn 20. They rush again, but 55/Connor stops it for no gain.

6:43, 2and10, Tenn 20. A screen pass is stopped in its tracks by an alert 52/Beason, for a 1 yd TFL.

6:02, 3and11, Tenn 19. They complete a pass for a FD, with 20/Gamble offering soft coverage.

5:22, 1and10, Tenn 33. A run gains only a yard, with 94/Leonard and 25/Marcus Hudson coming up from S to make the tackle.

4:50, 2and9, Tenn 34. Incomplete pass, with pressure from 95/CJohnson.

4:40, 3and9, Tenn 34. We bring a 6-man blitz, with 31/Marshall getting credit for the sack of (-10 yds), with 52/Beason right there behind him. Punt.

Series #10: (After what should be noted as good KO coverage by our ST)

Our DL is 66/EMoore, 99/EJohnson, 60/Irvin, and 76/Hardy. We also substitute freely at LB, with 59/Nic Harris, 54/Ivy, and 53/Jamal Williams in . 25/Hudson is in at S.

Q4, 14:47, 1and10, Tenn 17. On the first play, a pass, they max protect, with double team blocks on both our DE's. It's complete, for a 22 yd FD, from Collins to WR 83/Mariani, who appeared to push off 41/Munnerlyn.

14:26, 1and10, Tenn 39. A sack by 76/Hardy, with a nifty spin move, sets them back 8 yds.

13:50, 2and18, Tenn 31. Collins completes another pass to 83/Mariani, for 37 yds and a FD, evading 53/JWilliams.

13:00, 1and10, Car 32. First time all day in our territory, and Hardy doesn't like it. He makes a TFL of -3 yds on an attempted rush.

12:37, 2and13, Car 35. Collins throws a TD pass to his big sub TE 89/Cook, with what looked to me like poor coverage from 25/Hudson, who was beaten badly on the play. This temporarily put them up by a score of 6-7, but that was quickly reversed by 33/Mike Goodson's electrifying KO return, restoring the natural order of things.

Series #11:

Q4, 12:24, 1and10, Tenn 20. DL is 66/EMoore, 60/Irvin, 98/Hayden, and 91/EBrown. (5/Todd Carter had just put his KO through the uprights for a TB.) A pass goes incomplete, due to a stinging hit from 25/Hudson, trying to atone for his previous TD allowance.

12:20, 2and10, Tenn 20. Pss was completed to TE 89/Cook, but nullified by an OH penalty on their sub OL 61/Velasco.

11:49, 2and20, Tenn 10. Another pass completed, but again called back, this time for OPI. 76/Hardy is now in.

11:19, 2and25, Tenn 5. With pressure being brought by 76/Hardy, who almost gets another sack, the pass is intercepted by 32/Brian Witherspoon, giving us back the ball.

Series #12:

(After our KO, which is covered by a great ST tackle from 35/rookie R.J. Stanford.) They bring in at QB 7/Rusty Smith. Our DL is comprised of 66/EMoore, 98/Hayden, 68/Neblett, and 91/EBrown.

8:07, 1and10, Tenn 23. Motion penalty on them.

8:07, 1and15, Tenn 18. A draw gets back 9 yds.

7:35, 2and6, Tenn 27. Another QB Hurry for 76/Hardy (subbed after the last down) causes an incompletion. He almost gets the sack.

7:10, 3and6, Tenn 27. A slant is complete for 10, for a FD.

6:45, 1and10, Tenn 37. A run gains 3, tackled by S 25/Hudson. He is a strong hitter.

6:22, 2and7, Tenn 40. Pass complete for 12, and a FD, the tackle by 32/Witherspoon, in at CB.

5:40, 1and10, Car 48. A second time in our territory, and we still don't cotton to it (that's a little Tennessee/Carolina humor, to see if you're paying attention).

5:42, 1and10, Car 48. 32/Witherspoon bags his second INT, but takes to the ground untouched, after getting up from the pick and running a few yards. It appears he's chided for not getting more yds on the runback by both Fox and Meeks on the sidelines, but maybe they're just congratulating him, with some restraint. A guy that gets 2 picks in less than 6 minutes can't be all bad!

Series #13:

Our DL is now 76/Hardy at LDE, 98/Hayden, 60/Irvin, and 66/EMoore, with 92/Norwood showing during the series.

2:18, 1and10, Tenn 20. Incompletion.

2:15, 2and10, Tenn 20. 5 yd pass, with 32/Witherspoon on the tackle.

2:00, 3and5, Tenn 25. 12 yd pass, for a FD. We're in a prevent zone.

1:37, 1and10, Tenn 37. 13 yd pass, for another FD.

1:05, 1and10, midfield. Oops - almost in our territory again. Must stiffen. In this game, we treat midfield like the Red Zone. Stripped by 66/EMoore, they fumble, but they recover it. TFL of (-7 yds).

1:00, 2and17, Tenn 43. Pass complete, but ruin OOB by LB 59/Nic Harris - a gain of 7.

0:53, 3and10, midfield again. That's it! No more. Pass is well defended by CB 35/R.J.Stanford, who almost gets the pick.

0:45, 4and10, midfield. A last incompletion, well defended by LB 53/Jamar Williams. Ball goes over to Carolina, and we kneel for the victory, 15-7.

I'd note in summation that we have NUMEROUS effective defenders, who seem to love pursuit and aggressive tackling. The staff tried many, many different defensive alignments, and none of them looked to be weak. It will be tough to make cuts from all these guys.
