Blogger Q&A: Titans Edition

Hello CSR readers.  Jimmy from Music City Miracles here.  Post any questions you have about this weekend's contest between the Titans and Panthers here and someone from the site will be glad to answer.  This at least should be somewhat interesting because the starters from both teams should see significant action being that it is the third preseason game.  It will be good for the Titans unproven defensive line to face off with your rushing attack.  Fire away.

Welcome

Guys, can we get a few recs to keep this relevant for the week?

What’s your read on Vince Young. Is he really ‘getting it’ now, or are you as a fan still concerned that he is your long term solution at quarterback?

How do you feel about your defense? A once staunch Jeff Fisher defense seems to be slightly weakened by the loss of valuable players like Albert Haynesworth (yes, I know what he is now… lol), Keith Bullock and Kyle Vanden Bosch. Do you feel confident the Titans have found good replacements for those veterans?

BULLUCK!!!!!!!

I still have a little concern on VY, but he has made tremendous strides in the past year and half to prove that he is getting it. The offense really opened up last year once he took the reigns and he looked comfortable running it.

I feel shaky about the defense. There are a lot of young guys on the defense that this coaching staff says are ready to step up, but we will just have to wait and see. This defense could very well be horrendous, but they could also be a solid unit if enough guys take that step.

Sorry for this mispelling...

‘Deadwood’ which used to be on HBO was one of my favorite shows… the main character was named Seth Bullock, so I always make that in error.

He had 3.1 last year during preseason...

Christie kicks it high and short...Gonna be fielded by Lorenzo Neal at the 25...He dishes it back to Wycheck...He throws it across the field to Dyson...

He's like Barry Sanders...

…for 30 minutes he’ll get stifled or look average (perfectly indicating why his average is subpar in preseason). The next thing you know, he breaks it to the outside, cuts back, and goes 70 yards for the score. He must ALWAYS be respected for that ability. D-Will has the same kind of ability (and is actually a little more Barry-like, in build and cutback ability), but CJ’s speed is unrivaled…and honestly just profane.

I actually hope for his, and the Titans, sake they don’t give him more than 300 carries this year…I don’t want to see his career derailed or shortened by excessive punishment. Yes, I’d love to see him break the record for yards in a year, but I’d rather see him last longer…and I’m not even a Titans fan; I just respect what the kid does.

by Mr_Sticky on Aug 25, 2010 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Which is why I don't rate him that highly.

I want my RB consistently moving the chains, not getting stuffed for half his carries then breaking a monster run.

What about Legarrette Blount?

When he punched that guy in the facemask he looked pretty fierce. Do you think the temper will continue to be a problem or is it good-hearted preseason competition? He seems plenty talented…

by bmoyer on Aug 25, 2010 12:19 PM EDT reply actions

Well you have to

lean towards temper being a problem, but that punch was only a big deal because of what he did in college. That kind of stuff happens in training camp all the time. He will make this roster if he proves he can play, and he hasn’t proven that yet.

I agree...

…he punched the guy in the face mask. Above all else, it just shows he’s a badass or idiot, since he’s not going to do any damage to anything other than his own fist. But it also means he didn’t do anything to hurt a teammate…he just wanted to make a point.

Or, again, he’s an idiot. ;-)

Very much a concern

It is hard for rookies to get on the field under Fisher anyway, and he has yet to practice in camp.

Morgan is a guy they were extremely excited to get because he was supposed to be the most ready of all the DEs in this draft to step in and play right away. We will find out if that is true.

CB Alterraun Verner (who blogs for our site)

It seems like he has an INT every single day in practice, and he even got one in the first game. I didn’t expect him to be in the mix this year, but he has a real shot at winning the starting spot opposite Finnegan.

I would also add Marc Mariani

Being a 7th rounder from Montana, and buddy buddy with Fisher’s son Brandon at UM, most thought of him as a favor and a reach. Instead, Marc’s really shown a penchant for getting open, running tight routes, gluey hands, and solid return skills. He’s giving a definite reason to make the 53 roster.

That is a great question

Kenny Britt has more ability than Justin Gage could ever dream of, but Britt can’t get himself together. Neither of them are very consistent, so I have to go with Britt purely based on ability.

I just came across this looking for some FFL stuff and thought I would get your opinion:

From Walter Football, FFL players to Avoid:

12. Kenny Britt, WR, Titans.
I want to copy-paste what I wrote in my 2010 Fantasy Football Preseason Stock page:

Kenny Britt struggled against the Cardinals. Britt caught only one pass for eight yards, and drew a delay-of-game penalty by senselessly kicking the ball out of bounds. Based on what I’ve heard from a Titans source, Britt has spent far too much time partying it up this offseason, which was the reason why he was out of shape going into training camp. Stay away from Britt for the time being.

Did he appear out of shape or is this pundit crapola?

by Jaxon on Aug 25, 2010 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions

No...that was true

Fisher even held him out of some of the OTAs because he was so out of shape Fisher was afraid he would get hurt.

Britt has all the tools, but I will not be taking him early in a draft.

Physically, yes

but it is impossible to replace the experience and leadership that Mawae provided. I think the interior line will be better with Amano at center and Leroy Harris at guard than they were with Mawae and Amano, but it remains to be seen if Amano can handle all of the mental stuff that comes with being the starting center.

Is Fisher a typical "1st half + partial 3rd quarter for starters" coach?

For the 3rd preseason game, of course. I’m really interested to see how our defense holds up against a top notch running back. How long do you expect to see Chris Johnson out there?

By the way, I was a big “Titans” fan back with Warren Moon was behind center. That 35-3 comeback by the Bills still irks me to this day.

Fisher has actually done that

in the 4th preseason game in the past couple of years, but I would imagine the starters will play at least a half. I hope he doesn’t play CJ for more than a couple series, but I have no idea what the plan will be.

Where do you think the Titans will end up?

The last few years have been a bit of a rollercoaster for the Titans (much like the Panthers). Since 2005 though, there has been a steady improvement (4-12, 8-8, 10-6, 13-3). Last year though, the Titans dropped back down to 8-8, finishing 3rd in their division after being what some considered the best team in the NFL in 2008.

Do you expect the Titans to bounce back this year?

by aceofsween on Aug 25, 2010 3:19 PM EDT reply actions

I do expect a little bounce back

I will look more like the team that finished the season 8-2 than the one that started 0-6, but the 8-2 is deceiving. It only included one win against a playoff team, and that was the Cardinals without Kurt Warner. I will no be surprised by anything from 8-8 to 10-6.

Upcoming Stars

Because the Panthers have had massive turnover (37 players in all I believe), we have a lot of up and coming prospects for this year. The most heard of is probably Clausen, but several others are also in the mix that have been very impressive for us the past few weeks (Norwood, Hardy, McClain, Pugh, and Stanford).

Who has impressed so far for the Titans that might not be getting much notoriety from the outside?

Stephen Tulloch

He has been getting better and better each year, and looks great so far this preseason.

Also DT Jason Jones. Mark my words- he will make the Pro Bowl if he can stay healthy for 16 games.

"It will be good for the Titans unproven defensive line to face off with your rushing attack."

I doubt that will be a good barometer for your D-Line, as I don’t think our emphasis will be as much on the rushing attack. Without J-Stew to complement J-Will, no Otah to pave the way, and no Steve Smith to keep the defense honest, I still expect underwhelming rushing results…especially because our coaching staff’s major concerns are pass protection and timing in the passing game.

Please don’t take the above as an insult, I just doubt it will give you (positively or negatively) a clear assessment of your D-Line’s readiness.

We have several players on our roster who have outplayed their contracts (Jon Beason most readily comes to mind), but regardless the Panthers have been pretty staunch on not restructuring deals mid contract.

by Nafyad on Aug 26, 2010 4:24 PM EDT reply actions

I know you're asking Steven485... but for my two cents:

Yes.

Johnson simply wasn’t, nor is he, the right fit for the Carolina Panthers with DeAngelo Williams on the roster. We have an elusive back and a power back. Having elusiveness and speed don’t work as well together in a two back system.

Not to mention I’m never one who puts any stock in yard totals. When you carry the ball as much as CJ did it can inflate your numbers easily. I am much more inclined to look at yards per carry and touchdowns as a mark on an RB’s success because those give you an idea of how much that player is helping your team every time he touches the ball, rather than how many times he’s given it.

Thus far in their careers:
- Johnson: 5.3 ypc, 23 TDs
- Stewart: 4.9 ypc, 20 TDs

Yes Johnson’s ahead… but not by much.

Johnson is a great back but honestly after the load he carried last year and the load they will ask of him this year i don’t see much thread being left on the tires. Dwill and Jstew are sharing the work load and i think it will help out both men in the end and prolong there careers. One back systems work but they defiantly take there toll.

Thanks for the answers and your time Jimmy!

I guess we could have predicted a ‘My RB is better than yours!’ argument huh? CJ is an awesome talent but honestly this the first time I even thought about the fact the Panthers took Stewart over Johnson. I still don’t regret that but I can only base that on the future, not what has already happened. CJ is the top RB based on stats, can’t deny that. But its hard not think he is about to peak. Stewart should still have plenty in the tank, he’s just getting started.

Follow Cat Scratch Reader on Twitter and Facebook

by Jaxon on Aug 28, 2010 11:51 AM EDT reply actions

How much in the tank?

According to my calculations, Jonathan Stewart had 516 carries at Oregon (2891 yds, or an average of 5.6 YPC, plus 49 pass receptions), and 405 carries for the Panthers, thus far – total 921 rushes.

Chris Johnson carried it 462 times at E. Car (2198 yds, or 4,76 YPC, and 90 pass receptions), plus he’s had 609 rushes for Tennessee — that totals 1,071 rushes.

So Stewart has toted the rock 150 fewer times.

by bigdavis on Aug 28, 2010 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Johnson had a sub 5 YPC average in college?

Now that is surprising, especially considering the competition he faced. Looking at his stats, something flipped on for him that senior year. I don’t know what it was, but it was some kind of talent leap.

however Stewart's only practiced like twice. (I kid)

Also I guess it could be debated that NFL carries take a larger toll (bigger hits) than college carries.
