No nickname for Clausen...

We just need to drop the "my" from his name, and call him JIM CLAUSEN!!!

Doesn't it just roll of the tongue, like a Jon Montana, Dan Fouts, etc.  Plus it makes him not sound like such a douche, heyy I'm Jimmy.. blah blah, terrible name, Go BY JIM!!!!

I like it alot...

And as for LaFell, I like "Sticks"

"Go Hard" Greg Hardy

Can't wait to get camp reports from all of y'all up there..

Not a nickname, but...Top Jimmy?

I have been associating the Van Halen classic “Top Jimmy” to this kid since his freshman year at ND. I always think about that song anytime i hear the name Jimmy. It has nothing to do with anything, just a cool song. Hope he can live up to it.

I prefer to call Clausen 'Diva' or 'Over-rated'

but feel free to call him anything you like.

And this is coming from a Matt Moore homer.

The guy is not over-rated.

His career closely resembles Todd Marinovich...

…family develops a qb
…kid gets all the hype through schools. Performs well on amateur levels.

I just hope he doesn’t have/develop a substance abuse problem.

And to say someone had a perfect game against the porous defense of Hawai’i that year is being very disingenuous. While they may have had the #28 passing defense, it was not against the type of competition that would make you stop and say, “wow.” Also, when you’re getting blown out of games, i.e. Florida, Oregon State, Boisie State, Utah State (yes, Utah State), your opponent is going to run the ball more. Then take into account the teams they did blow out and the opponents passing rankings and it shows the Warrior’s passing defense to be the fraud it is.

So, take that guy’s word for it. I just hope I never have to see him take snaps until it’s garbage time.

Thankfully what we’re both exhibiting are opinions. I tend to think mine are more based on a complete history than one game of brilliance against substandard competition. Only time will tell who is right.

In time we’ll see. I just won’t hold my breath.

Seems to me your opinion is based on a grudge, not anything tangible

If that’s the case and you ‘Just plain don’t like him’ like Terry Bradshaw, then that’s fine. But I don’t really understand condemning any player before they have had a chance to show you anything.

Fair points about the Hawaii game, etc… but when you say:

I just hope I never have to see him take snaps until it’s garbage time.

Why? Without having any shred of evidence about what kind of pro he is why would you hope this is the case? If we had seen 4 preseason games and he threw 12 picks then I could see your point, but after one day of training camp which by all accounts wasn’t terrible why write off his NFL career already?

I’m more than a little jaded by any anti-Clausen argument, because as it stands I don’t think it has any legs. If you think he’s a punk, spoiled, cocky etc that’s fine… but I find the vast majority of the hate towards Jimmy Clausen to be just as irrational as the widespread love of Tim Tebow. In both cases, let’s see what they do in any NFL game before we relegate them as ‘over-rated’.

No, there’s no grudge there. I just don’t see him being a NFL talent based on what my eyes have seen in the past from him and comparing him to other players that have become NFL QBs.

As for my comment, considering we have a more proven commodity in Moore for this year and I have the opinion he will be a good QBfor the Panthers, the comment makes sense. If it’s garbage time and he’s playing then it’s not because the team is losing a lot of games, but we’re doing well and are protecting the QB that I believe we should be invested in. In those times Clausen will be facing NFL talent and we can make a better evaluation of his talents at that point. It won’t be a perfect situation to see how he will be, but it will be better than looking at the film of his games in the high school and college ranks.

If you want to call it a ‘grudge’ then so be it. Just like my opinion, you are entitled to it. But I do have some ‘facts’ to my opinion. And it’s not based on anything he’s done after being drafted. And this opinion would be voiced about him no matter where he was.

It's not what you've done but what you are doing that matters.

I just can't work out if you're a Panthers fan or not...

If you are, then I would think you would be worried about Clausen, but not so eager to condemn him early. There were plenty of people who said ‘Philip Rivers will never be an NFL quarterback with that delivery’ and now he’s easily one of the 5 best in the league

But as a Panthers fan how can we responsibly give a nickname to someone who hasn’t taken the field yet? I guess that is the initial place where my ire was drawn. Maybe I shouldn’t have gone hardcore on the initial comment, but for some reason the nickname thing got to me.

In the end you are right, I shouldn’t be eager to condemn him (as the comments I made would make), but as a realist I do not have high expectations for him and feel his drafting/contract is a waste of resources for the franchise.

If you feel that does not make me a fan I will gladly ship you my Smith jersey and stop cheering for the team. But I’d feel rather naked after investing in this team since their inception. All the cool memorabilia I have would need a new home too.

Okay, that last set of comments were sarcastic. I’ll still cheer for the team no matter what. if a 1-15 season can’t stop me then a differing opinion and accusation won’t either.

I'm not accusing anything, I really was interested.

I see from your account you’ve commented here 17 times, and most of those have been fairly negative. On the flip side you have over 60 comments on the Oakland Raiders blog. As a closet Jets fan (my dad is a New Yorker) I understand being a dual fan, I was just curious why a fan would be so eager to call a player a Diva or Overrated without seeing what he does in the NFL, particularly a player who a team you’re emotionally invested in has drafted.

As it stands right now, August 3rd, 2010 Jimmy Clausen has behaved like a consummate pro to the media, his teammates and in his demeanor; is he cocky- yes… but a diva? Dez Bryant is a diva, and I haven’t see anything Diva like from Clausen as a Panther.

So then I move to the ‘overrated’ comment. Outside of Mel Kiper, Panthers fans and Notre Dame fans I don’t think anyone is ‘overrating’ him. He’s arguably the most hated rookie nation wide, as he’s become the foil to Tebow’s brilliance. People aren’t just thinking Clausen will fail, they’re hoping he will.

I understand being perturbed at giving a guy a nickname who hasn’t earned it… but we’re calling him ‘Pickles’ right now, it’s hardly a nickname that conjures up images of him hoisting a Lombardi trophy.

I completely respect your opinion to dislike the guy’s game, but your argument never seemed to stem from a legitimate critique of Clausen the player, rather, it seemed like a condemnation of his character due to his family, his HS career and his personality.

Time will tell… I’d just rather be cautiously optimistic than openly pessimistic; but you say potato…

Ha, ha… the only reason I have so many comments on the Oakland blog is because a MLB from Bama was drafted by their team.

And yes, I’ve been negative here about certain things, but they’re the things I do know about.

I see your point, and will do my best to comment about other things about this team and what motivates the positive side of the Panther fan in me. Unforunately it’s the things I feel strongly about that I will comment on. Maybe a little more of Williams/Stewart love from me is in order. Wait, that doesn’t read right…

Don't change your commenting on my account...

You just seemed to come out of the gate very harshly on Clausen. I was wondering why you so virulently disliked him, but I think we both agree as fans that we hope he proves you wrong.

No offense...

So if he is awful, will that make you feel good? Will you feel vindicated? I hated this kid at ND. He is a cat now, so treat em like the rest of the boys. He has done nothing to warrant any praise, just as he has done nothing to lose our faith. I don’t know about you, but i hope he is the best QB to ever pick-up a football. Do i think he will be? Of course not, but if he is successful then we also will be.

by kittylover on Jul 29, 2010 8:54 PM EDT reply actions

I assume this comment is for me, and if not I apologize.

There is a fine line from fanatic to realist. We all want to be fans and hope for the possible best. But the realist in me will not allow me to give this kid the time of day until he proves me wrong.

I’ve seen too much football to not be skeptical about a kid who’s been groomed to be a quarterback but doesn’t seem to be a football player. His ego is documented. His pedigree is documented. Unfortunately for Clausen it takes a bit of moxie to be a QB in the NFL.

Again, as above, in time we’ll find out what this guy can do. I’m just not going to praise him at this point of his career. He’s a rookie that will be holding a clipboard. If he gets into the game and proves me wrong at this level then I’ll eat my words. But to be completely honest I am not holding my breath.

Ask his teammates whether he showed his moxie

playing in the Purdue game. Or most of the year injured.

…ask USC how he operates vs a pro style defense.

Look, at the end of the day...

…we’re Panther fans that have a differing opinion. The only thing that will prove any opinion correct is the play on the field.

Thank goodness football season is right around the corner.

You lie!!!!

That’s what parents say to little kids when they’re in their car going on vacation.

“Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?”

“Almost. It’s right over the next hill.”

nickname for clausen

third string. this link from profootballtalk.com details how gantt and yasinkas mention how good moore look, clausen is nothing special, and he’s not gonna beat out hunter cantwell who has a year in the NFL system, not the college version, and cantwell has one of the strongest arms in the league.

by usana_gaines on Aug 3, 2010 2:41 PM EDT reply actions

Clausen will beat Cantwell...

Despite what good old Pat Y says, Clausen has been working equal number of reps as Cantwell with the 2nd team, and they’ve been ramping that up more and more as he learns the playbook.

Jamarcus Russell and Kyle Boller have two of the strongest arms in the league… doesn’t mean they’re any good. Accurate QBs will always find a place in the NFL, guys with Howitzers don’t always can out.

As James said

you have to be able to aim your cannon. Perfect example, today in practice I ran a hitch route, the QB gunned it hard and high, and I busted my thumb up trying to reach it. Had he placed it better, both of us would have looked good. And while Clausen isn’t quite as used to NFL speed as Cantwell, he won’t be as far behind on playbook knowledge as most rookies. That will help him tremendously.
