Which Panthers would you protect?
So a couple days ago i was on the Atlanta Braves blog called "Talking Chop" on SB Nation and a user by the name of mvhsbball made an interesting fanpost.
He said what if the MLB started everything over? Each team could "protect" 5 of their players on the team and the rest would be thrown into a draft pool. I just thought it was interesting and cool to think about.
So say Roger Goodell does the same thing. Each team is starting from scratch and this is not a 1-2 year thing. The Panthers are completely remaking the organization. So which 5 Panthers players would you protect? Leave an explanation and have fun.
My List:
1. Steve Smith- This is just because for me he's the best receiver out there. And i just want him to retire a panther.
2. Jonathan Stewart- In 3-4 seasons he could be the best RB in the league because he's obviously tough enough to play through the pain and still be a beast. Plus he rarely fumbles unlike AP.
3. Jon Beason- Again, for me he's the best linebacker in the NFL. He's the heart of the defense and still has lots of years ahead of him.
4. Ryan Kalil- He's only 25 and is already becoming one of the best centers to play.
5. Everette Brown- I think he's gonna be a beast in the future so id keep him around Meeks for him to develop. Who knows, in the "draft" we could pick up Freeney to team up with him? :)
your turn......

Solid choices
The one change I would make would be D. Will for Smitty. D. Will and J. Stew complement each other really really well and Smitty isn’t getting any younger.
Good post. It was tough to leave off a few guys, especially #89!
I'd be surprised if 89 plays for a different team
He has grown some roots here in the Carolinas. Plus if he went elsewhere he couldn’t get his Bojangles.
"If you ask Jets' CB Darrelle Revis, there is no one who is harder to cover one-on-one than Steve Smith. That has to mean something coming from last year's runner-up for Defensive Player of the Year."
Gotta wanna needa getta hava
Bojangles! I’m glad I’m not the only one who could never live without it! :)
He could get his Cactus Cooler though.

I'm afraid I'd have to keep Kalil over D Will. Otherwise, I'm with Smitty.
Where there’s a will… I want to be in it.
Stew, Beason, Kalil, Thomas Davis, Clausen
(If we’re talking about 2011)
Let the flaming begin. Just my $0.02.
Here's my two cents. Oh crap, I'm poor now. =x
1. Jonathan Stewart – Even though he has injury problems, he hasn’t missed a game yet, so it’s hard to leave him off. He’s a top 5 back easily, with a rare size and speed combo. At 23 years old, he still has over 10 years to play if he stays healthy.
2. Jon Beason – You can’t leave off a 25 year old middle linebacker who is a top 3 talent at his position. He’s the leader of the defense, with an elite ability to predict where plays are going.
3. Jimmy Clausen – Including rookies is a gamble, but I like what I’ve seen of him from college video. If he has the potential to be a franchise quarterback, he deserves to be named.
4. Ryan Kalil – He’s a top 3 center in my opinion, and he’s only 25.
5. Everette Brown – Number 5 was a tough call. There was no one else I’d really consider a lock. I was thinking about everyone from Brown to Charles Johnson to Sherrod Martin to Captain Munnerlyn to Dante Rosario to some rookies.
stuff 'bout stuff.
My 5...
1. Jordan Gross
2. Ryan Kalil
3. Jeff Otah – the game is won or lost in the trenches. These guys can make life easier for any offensive backfield. They represent 60% of what is widely regarded as one of the best and youngest o-lines in the NFL. If we’re rebuilding let’s do so with a good foundation for the O.
4. Jon Beason – the heart and soul of the D.
5. Jimmy Clausen – taking a shot at having a franchise QB for years to come with this pick.
Take the world as it is, not as it ought to be.
Stewart, Kalil, Smitty, Beason and Gross.
I dont want to take any chances on some rookies or players that have yet to prove themselves as consistent. If I’m only allowed 5 I would make sure they’re proven vets.

Well considering there's a redraft.....
#1-Jordan Gross
Protect the blindside.
#2-Jimmy Clausen
Franchise QB.
#3-Ryan Kalil
Top young center
#4-Jonathan Stewart
Top young running back, could be the best in the NFL with more carries.
#5-Jon Beason
Top MLB, and the leader of the defense.
And my top priorities in the redraft would be a #1 wideout, and DL.
Ready for 2010 football already!!!
Yeah, but you don't give up franchise left tackles.
Otah is not that, and a mauling RT is easier to find, like Jeremy Bridges or even Geoff Schwartz.

My five
Kalil
Otah
Gross
Stewart
Beason
I guess you could say I favor rebuilding with a great offensive line and a stud RB behind it….and Beason…well…he’s just a beast!
Jonathan Stewart
Jon Beason
Ryan Kalil
Jeff Otah

Im surprised by the Jimmy Clausen picks
He can still be a bust like other QB’s that come into the league. Just wondering, if there is a redraft then why not spend the first pick on a proven QB instead of taking that chance?

It all depends on where you're drafting.
There’s not enough good starting QBs for every team. Even out of the ones that are good, some only have one or a few years left in them.

I think it's funny in the moore vs. clausen discussion that
when it’s a conversation about 2010 almost everyone likes Moore, but looking at the longview a lot of people like clausen. I wonder when “the switch” will happen?
Yeah I noticed that as well
In my opinion Moore will be successful this year with the team we have so, my drafted team would be successful with a QB like Matt Moore or any other mediocre QB like Jake was the past few years.
But I did just realize that if every team was allowed to keep 5 players then teams will keep their franchise QB so my strategy did have a flaw but I still wouldnt take a chance on Clausen just yet.

A lot of people will protect their proven QB's.
Their won’t be many available.

My list... and why
Jon Beason – There are no words. one of the best, if not THE best, LBs in the game. You have to keep him, because he is the captain of your defense no matter who you select.
Jonathan Stewart – Young and has the potential to be the best RB in the game if he had a lion share of carries. Our two back system works great, but I think we could be very effective still if we took a step back on the talent level on our #2 RB. In the redraft, there will be floods of RBs available for drafting, but we need to lockdown a sure thing at RB1.
Ryan Kalil – Again, young but plays well above his years and may be the best C in the game. Jonathan Stewart power running game will rely on holes up the middle, and Kalil is very important in that regard.
Jordan Gross – Not the youngest, but the value of a pro bowl LT is something all teams will want. He protects your franchise QB’s blindside, and is an all around dominant force on the edge.
Jimmy Clausen – He is the bubble pick in all this. We THINK he can be our franchise QB, but then again Matt Moore also could be. But I also think you have to hold onto a QB because the pickings in a redraft will be slim. Any team with a proven franchise QB is going to decide to protect them. So its not like we can go out and draft Peyton Manning or Phillip Rivers, because they won’t be available. Also, any team who does NOT retain a QB, will likely look to get their QB before anything else. While they are busy picking QBs, we could get a top selection at any other position of our choosing. Hopefully a great WR1.
After retaining those 5, my first pick would be at WR, then I would look for a shutdown CB, then work on the defensive front 7.

I'd find it hard to leave off Steve Smith
Even if he is 31 years old. The only WR’s who mean more to their team than Smitty, like Andre Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Calvin Johnson, Reggie Wayne, Roddy White, and players like Colston, Marshall, Welker, etc are all going to be locked up by their teams. Why start off with a deficit at WR when you have one of the best in the game.
So I’d say:
Jordan Gross: Left tackles are a premium commodity and he’s one of the best.
Jonathon Stewart: As good as any in the game, and younger than DeAngelo, which is the only reason he stays and DeLo goes.
Ryan Kahlil: Top 5 center to anchor the run game.
Jon Beason: No brainer
Steve Smith

my only argument, and the only different between mine and yours Sniff
If you dont keep a QB, you will be left selecting from probably the bottom 16 QBs in the league. Sure you also probably won’t be able to pick from the young #1 WRs out there, but chances are the pool for RB and WR will be much deeper than that of QB.
For instance, I would wager that New England would definitely protect Tom Brady, but they would need to make a decision between whether they want to keep Moss or Welker. Same in New Orleans… surely they would keep Drew Brees, but could they afford to hold onto both Colston and Meachem without hurting themselves to much at other positions?
Depending on draft order, we could also “re-draft” Steve Smith with our first pick.

Ok, Cornbeef on Ryan Kalil out, Matt I can still show you Moore is in

Yeah, that was kinda dumb of me
The same reasoning applies to QB as to WR.

I must be...
…one of the only people on the planet who would take DeAngelo Williams over Stewart.
Don’t get me wrong, I love ‘em both. But D-Will has proven to be good over a couple more years, averages more yards a carry, is a better receiver, and I think has a lower fumble per carry average than J-Stew. And is there anyone else you could see as a better representative/face for their team? He’s bright, humble, funny, and light-hearted. Granted, J-Stew has more years left in him and came out of college more highly touted for the pro game…but DeAngelo is still my man.
averages more yards a carry
Only by 0.1, and Stew was hampered with an ankle injury most (if not all) of last year.
is a better receiver
No, Stew is.
I think has a lower fumble per carry average than J-Stew
Indeed
……
You can’t go wrong with either. I guess most of us just prefer Stewie.

Just Wondering...
How do you judge who the better receiver is and be able to answer it with such confidence?
I picked Stewart but I do think Williams is the better receiver, but only because I have seen more production from him in the passing game.

perhaps because...
…DeAngelo seems to be a little better in space…but I have the same view.
Just like Jerry
Youth will be served on my team. I decided to create a young nucleus of quality players around my offense since that’s where we’re strongest this year. Essentially I went for youth, performance, and then upside.
1. Beast mode
2. Stewart
3. Clausen
3. Kalil
4. Otah
I figure I’ll pick up a good young receiver very early ‘start over draft pick’, a young penetrating DT or DE early, and a good G during the draft. Later I’ll pickup a veteran QB who used to be good but is now past his prime to tutor Clausen 1-2 years until he is ready to start. My core 5 would then be in or just entering their prime and we’re ready to roll to a SB.
