Rivalry dead?
I was pondering tonight for a while after watching some highlights of the NFC south duking it out and it got me wondering who was the Panthers biggest rival? Who is our arch nemesis? Which team is just more sweet to beat than any other? Surely it's someone within the division right? I did alittle research on this and watched some highlights and I guess its all a matter of opinion.
I found that when the Panthers came into the league they were in the NFC west. In those days the panthers were always pitted against the Jaguars because they came into the league at the same time and they are only a couple states apart. And maybe because they were both named after big cats? I digress. Anyway in this time they also developed a friendly rivalry with the 49ers, since they were in the same division. But then in 2002 they realigned the divisions and put Carolina in the NFC South.
So within the the division we have New Orleans, Atlanta and Tampa bay. All four teams are very tough and geographically they are basically neighbors. There have been some great games within this division and the Title in the south is always up for grabs. But which games seem much more intense than the others? I hate to be the one to say it, but until last year the Saints never really posed much a threat in the South. The three other teams just kinda beat up on them every year. Props to them for winning a superbowl but you cant argue with facts. So between the other two teams it goes like this;
Tampa bay is a mere state and a half away from Carolina. There has always been tension between these clubs and in 2008-09 season they had a great battle to clinch the division on Sunday Night Football I believe. They had a great running attack just as Carolina had "Double Trouble". And we all remember the echo of Dante Wesley's shoulder pad on Clifton Smith's helmet last year, and the resulting brawl that left Wesley ejected and the refs running out of flags and throwing there hats to signal penalties. That's pretty intense. Both clubs had rough years last year but the ferocity in the games was always there.
Then we come to Atlanta. A mere 250 miles from Carolina. Flashback to September 5th 1995; where Carolina loses their very first regular season game 23-20 in overtime in Atlanta. Skip to the next year. The clubs meet in the first outing of the year again and Carolina defeats Atlanta 29-6 in Carolina. Sounds kinda like the start of somthing? The past few years the Atlanta Falcons have had excellent quarterbacks and a solid run game. They have always been right there in the race. In 2006 they met in the season finale and the Panthers embarassed the Falcons 44-11, but for the most part these games are always very good and i have alot of respect for the Falcons.
So which club is it? Which team feels especially good to beat on Sunday? I personally think its the Bucs. But thats my opinion and its a biased one at that because I have a friend thats a Tampa Bay fan and it feels oh so good to call him on sunday and give him an earful. But looking at the Falcons it raises alot of questions. Or it could be another team. I have to say it felt especially good beating the Arizona Cardinals this season in a mirror game of the playoff blunder from the year before. And it has always felt good to beat the Rams ever since that divisional playoff game in the 03-04 season. So which team do you think it is?

I say the Falcons.
They tend to give us the most trouble historically, and they’re the only divisional opponent we have a losing record against. We even have winning records against our old NFC West rivals. The Falcons just have our number too many times for my liking. There was a stretch where the Panthers lost 6 straight to them.
It’s hard to even consider the Saints a rival. If it wasn’t for the Panthers sucking it up at the turn of the century, we’d be completely obliterating the Saints in the series record. The Panthers have won 11 of the last 15.
The Bucs have had some good teams, but we’re to them what the Falcons are to us. It doesn’t seem to matter how good the Bucs are, we always give them a run for their money or beat them. In that respect, the Bucs had a poll like this recently and they overwhelmingly said the Panthers were their biggest rival.

For the same reason the Bucs say that, I say it about the Falcons.

NY Giants
Over the years, Tampa has been the rivarly talked about most with the Carolina Panthers on ESPN and other sport shows, and I’ll admit it, when these two teams play,it’s fun to watch. But theres one team that seem to be an intresting match up for the Panthers. That team being the New York Giants. In the 2005-2006 season they met in the playoffs, and Carolina beat them pretty good. The following season they met late in the season, and this time the Giants got the upper hand. In the 2008 season they played in week 16 to decide who would have home field advantage, and the Giants won in overtime on sunday night football.(that was a bad night for me seeing as I’m the only one in my family not a Giants fan) This past season they met in week 16 once again, the last game ever in historic Giant Stadium, and the Panthers spanked them up and down. Not to mention destorying any chance the Giants had to make the playoffs. Now this season, for the third year in a row, the Panthers and Giants go head to head, in week 1! I can’t wait to see what happens.
Yeah, I’d probably say the Giants are the biggest out of division rivalry at least.

If we beat them in the opener
We will be talked about as a rival. It helps that so many New Yorkers live in Charlotte, keeping each teams blood boiling. We will just have to make sure that if we do win, we do not let Giants fans fill our house when (if) they battle in Charlotte.

I know exactly what He'd say
He'd say "Oi!" to the punks
and "Oi!" to the skins
but "Oi!" to the world and everybody wins.

I think if Carolina loses then it’ll be a rivalry. If Carolina wins then it’s just domination.

This is one of those times
Where The Giants will have to choose the rivalry. As an expansion team, we are still thought of as not worthy to shine the shoes of the original teams. But if New York loses in their new home, and even better if the Jets win, if our games continue to be close then I expect we will become rivals over the next decade.

I agree.
If we lose, they’ll just say “Yep, par for the course.” If we win, especially in that new venue, it will really get under their skin and make them say, “Okay, let’s make sure we beat them next time.” That’s how you make a rivalry, get the other team as excited and hyped up to play you as you are of them.
Good bye #43. Good luck in Chicago.

When we play the Cardinals it's always a good game.
But that’s more of a since 2008 rivalry. It’s always nice to beat New England too.

Rivalries
Within the NFC South, I say Atlanta is our best rivalry…at least I seem to get the loudest and most stressed when we play each other. BUT…for me, overall, it’s the Giants! Most of my familly are Giants fans and we probably razz each other the most when they play. Even my daughter, who loves the Panthers, becomes a traitor when we play them.
Bucs
We have had some doozies against the Bucs. I seem to remember a game where we blocked a late PAT and won12-9 (possibly in OT). I know they are weaker now, but of the NFC South teams, it is the best rivarly (to me) of our time in the division.
Side note: I really miss the rivalry with the Niners from the NFC West days. Also, we have a few playoff rivals other than Arizona. We have had a few games with the Rams and Cowboys in the playoffs too.
