Panthers Sign Eric Norwood
The Panthers have signed LB/DE Eric Norwood to a contract, according to the team's official website.
With the signing of Norwood, the total of draft picks signed is up to 7, with Jimmy Clausen, Brandon LaFell, and Armanti Edwards being the only draft picks left without a deal. (Although this should change in the near future.)

Wow...
This is unprecedented for us. They are really knocking this out quicly. I’m glad to see it though. Get all of the business type distractions out of the way for these young guys.
Fast Fast Fast
Man the Panthers used to be so slow at getting rookies to sign contracts but this is going very quickly for us this offseason. Pugh, Stanford, McClain, Hardy, Pike, and now Norwood man we are moving and clearing up this list of unsigned Panthers quickly which is not the Panthers past history. Glad to see it however interesting as well that Pike got a 4-year contract ~ look out for the Clausen deal.
If Moore doesn’t tear it up or stumbles out of the gate he may play himself right out of Carolina starting lineup and roster very quickly. I am excited that at last we drafted offense and we have the best QB depth chart we have ever had as a organization.
A. Edwards should be next I agree with you guys and then we can turn or attention to our elite or most important draft picks (higher).
For me I wanted LaFell signed I believe he is going to be offensive rookie of the year ? Well either him or Edwards for sure. Man it is nice to talk about all these weapons and QB’s we finally have on offense.
Go Panthers !

Where did you see Pike was signed to a 4-year contract?
Just looking for details — I saw none on the Panthers web site.
That would seem like a slap in the face to Moore.
I'm not sure it's a slap in the face
What did you think of the Clausen pick, in that regard?
OTOH, if we already had a guy who was the backup, signing a 6th rounder to a 4 year deal might be a slap in the face to that guy.
I couldn’t find the details either.

I looked around, but couldn't find the numbers...
Still, I don’t think this is the deal that slaps Moore in the face. That will come when Clausen signs. Moore got a big raise due to his RFA tender, and he just has to realize that the team isn’t re-signing veterans this year due to CBA rules and ongoing negotiations. But, he should still be motivated to work his a$$ off, because he’ll be a free agent after this season.
Moore will be making less money than his backup, at least for a year. If he lets that affect his game, it will be Moore that’s the backup (again).

Not the money in the contracts that I was talking about.
I just find it hard to believe they’d sign Pike to a 4 year deal, period, when he’s shown nothing, and Moore got no such vote of confidence.
its the disparity between contracts…Moore would command much more guaranteed $. That’s the sole reason, IMO.
Do or do not. There is no try.
Precisely
If Matt Moore wants to sign for Tony Pike’s likely 4 year, $1.5 million or so, then he can sign it tomorrow.

I also blog the Panthers at Real Bits of Panthers
Is that indeed what Pike signed for?
I asked for some evidence of his getting a 4-year contract, and as of yet haven’t seen it.
For what its worth
That is what everyone was reporting. ESPN, NFL Network, yada yada yada, all reported a 4 year deal….don’t make it so, but I see no reason for them to mislead folks about that.
Do or do not. There is no try.
Thanks.
But you’d think there’d be some source, somewhere. that would confirm it in writing.
OK,I'll bite.
Inside the Panthers: Panthers sign rookie QB Pike
He signed a four-year deal with an $81,145 signing bonus, according to his agent Rick Smith.
Thanks - didn't see that.
Stopped reading the Observer blog awhile ago.
I think the presedent for 4 yr deals is set
A 6th rounder wouldn’t sign for less if that’s what everyone around him is getting…that’s my guess anyway. Plus Moore is getting paid nicely and if he plays well his next deal will be a nicer one than he could have gotten this year.
YES!
This is going to be one of our impact players for sure this year. I’m glad this part is now out of the way so he can focus on killing QB’s!
Goodness … you know a Gamecock has to be good when a Clemson fan gives him his due lol. I really wish they had gotten Jacoby Ford. When USC played Clemson, I was always more afraid of Ford than even Spiller. But, I like the receivers they drafted anyway, so it’s all good.
stuff 'bout stuff.

I wanted Ford as well
But I was willing to take Norwood at 48…pre draft… assuming Tate would have been off the board by then. But what do I know?
Overall I’m more than pleased with how it went. Except for not taking Rolle and picking Pike.
I am an optimist. It does not seem too much use being anything else.

Double Trouble. #89. A QB who can protect the ball. Gary "the broad side of a " Barnidge. One of the very best O-lines in the league. A few young talented WRs with a lot of upside. The best FB to come out in the Draft in a long long time.
A top 5 secondary. An awesome LB corp. A 325 lb. wall on wheels in Leonard. A 306 lb. Tank that is as strong as his name suggests. Eric Norwood and Everette Brown coming off the edges too fast. Ol reliable Brayton and Johnson.
A totally new Special Teams unit. With the Jets best gunner in Wallace Wright, the Cardinals ST captain Aaron Francisco, Marcus Hudson, Fast as you want to be Brian Witherspoon.
This is one hell of a football team! This Football team is very young and set up to have success for years to come. This is the foundation of a Dynasty!!!!

I'm not sure Norwood will contribute a whole lot in 2010
but I’m excited about seeing him play. He always impressed me when I saw him play for USC. He has that inner intangible that allows him to go non-stop for the entire play. He also has a nose for the ball that is hard to teach
I think he'll be a situational pass rusher on long down and distance plays ...
and I think he’ll be yet another force on special teams.

Yeah, that’s probably all he’ll be used for his rookie year unfortunately. And, really, I don’t know how many of those situations there will be with our questionable defensive line. Will the line be able to create tackles for a loss on running backs, or sack the QB? I have a feeling he won’t be in for hardly anything except special teams play. At least I can watch him in the preseason some.

Could he develop into a James Harrison?
I know the Steelers play a 3-4, but Harrison is 6’, 240, about the identical size as Norwood and Thomas Davis. Harrison has 34 1/2 sacks in the last 3 years.
I could envision our personnel using 4 backers, with Connor and Beason in the middle — but of course, we’d probably need to find a true NT to make that work.
But situationally, I see Norwood as potentially effective as Harrison.
I agree, and I've compared him to Harrison at times.
He has that same drive and vicious relentlessness.
Good bye #43. Good luck in Chicago.

That would be awesome... hopefully he has a head start, though.
Harrison didn’t do much until his 6th year. I’m thinking Norwood breaks through in year 3.

Actually his 4th year with any playing time, as 1st as a starter...
…but who’s counting?

When he got his chance, he took full advantage of it.
I’m not saying Norwood will be able to break into the lineup immediately, but when he does…
