As we are all together here anxiously awaiting the beginning of football season I find myself getting amped up for training camp as much as the season itself. Ok I lied. But there is gonna be an awful lot of competition down in Spartanburg in some very important postions on the field ; which include quarterback and wideout. Right now I wanted to make this article's focal point on the wide receivers. Last year Carolina's run game was on lock and the defense was ranked pretty high in the league. We all know what the problem was early on in the season and thats exactly what coach John Fox looked to fix in the offseason. The passing game. So we go out and sign two quarterbacks and four wideouts..bringing the total to 10 gentleman battling for a spot on the roster. Problem solved?
There is alot of hype around Brandon Lafell mainly because he's from LSU. 6-2, 211 lbs. There was some ball dropping concerns in minicamp but you know thats what they are going to be drilling him on in training camp so hopefully they will get that ironed out and I can see Brandon Lafell as a strong physical Moose replacement perhaps?
Armanti Edwards played QB for Appalachian State for 4 years. Upon being drafted he made the transition to receiver. Being a QB first might give him an advantage over the other rookies and I heard reports that he was extremely impressive in minicamp. He's 5'11 , 182 lbs. I think if Steve smith takes Armanti under his wing (broken wing) I believe he could be just as physical and explosive as number 89 himself.
Finally we get to David Gettis. Personally this was one of my favorite picks in the draft. He was a steal in the 6th round at 6'3 212 lbs. Hailing from Baylor he has great hands , speed and size. He was impressive in minicamp and was one of the first of the draft choices to get ink, so I like to think they liked what they saw. He's another guy I could see as a Moose replacement.
As for the other wideouts in the battle we have Wallace Wright , Kenny Moore , Dexter Jackson , Trent Guy , Charly Martin , Oliver Young and my man Dwayne Jarrett. Wallace Wright did work on the Jets special teams but only had 2 receptions for 21 yards the whole year. Not very impressive numbers. Kenny Moore is 3 years deep into his career and last year he only had 6 receptions but averaged 9.8 yards per catch. Those numbers could be decent but once again not very impressive. Dexter Jackson was a 2nd round pick that was waived by tampa bay and we picked him up. He could be a threat but not as threatening as some of these other guys. I guess we'll find out. I think Trent Guy and Charly Martin will be more of special team threats than wideouts which is still a positive move. Honestly I have no idea who Oliver Young is. I only found a few videos of him from South Carolina state and couldnt really make a judgement on that. So good luck to him i guess. Finally we have Dwayne Jarrett. Alot of people have mixed feelings about him and alot of people are just plain tired of waiting for him and I completely understand that. But last year my feelings about him kinda changed. It just seemed like midway through last season he got his footing and capped the year with his first touchdown of his career. Maybe all he needed was Matt Moore at QB? A year or two to just grow up? I heard that he was working really hard this year at Minicamp so maybe he'll suprise us. Lets hope thats the case.
For the record this is all completely my opinion so dont take it to heart or anything. Im not a journalist nor am i a writer or anything. Im just getting antsy waiting for the season to start and thought id come share my thoughts about the receivers with me peeps. Let me know who you think should get the starting spots and who your looking forward to seeing on the field next year.
