Panthers Position Review- Quarterback
The best word to describe the Panthers quarterback position from 2009 into 2010 is tumultuous. In years past the waters have been quiet at the QB position with Jake Delhomme seizing control since week one of 2003, but this offseason will be marred with questions by the national media on touted rookie Jimmy Clausen and his role in the battle with incumbent Matt Moore who finished the final five games of last season with great poise.
Today we'll be looking at all the quarterbacks on the roster right now, their chance to remain on the roster come the end of training camp and who could potentially start at the position.
Matt Moore: 6'3", 202 lbs; 4th year- Oregon State
In past training camps Matt Moore has been rather underwhelming, but he shines during the regular season when it counts. This camp marks the first time where Moore will have ample time working with the 1st team. In limited time as a starter he has already forged valuable bonds with Steve Smith and other key members of the Panthers' offense and that should translate to a better understanding on the field. While the coaching staff haven't officially named a starter and have been advocating ‘competition' I think everyone knows that it would take a momentous event for Clausen to unseat Moore.
100% chance to make the roster, 92% chance to be named starter
Jimmy Clausen: 6'2", 222 lbs; Rookie- Notre Dame
Clausen is going to be the focus of much of the media attention on Panthers' camp. A polarizing figure he is both loved and hated by college football fans around the nation, but there's no denying Clausen has talent. Entering the 2010 draft there were several pundits who believed the Notre Dame product was a better pro prospect than #1 overall pick Sam Bradford, but nobody truly believed Clausen would fall out of the 1st round. What he offers is a very accurate, good arm and high football IQ, but there are questions about his social IQ as numerous charges have been leveled about his inability to relate to his teammates- only time will tell.
100% chance to make the roster, 8% chance to be named starter, 88% chance to be named backup.
Hunter Cantwell: 6'4", 236 lbs; 2nd year- Louisville
During the 2009 preseason Hunter Cantwell caught the eyes of Panther fans with solid play, crisp throws and a winning mentality. Cantwell is still very, very raw but he is a solid project who could become a poor man's Matt Schaub in time. For now, he's battling rookie Tony Pike for who stays on the roster and who's relegated to the practice squad. At times Cantwell looks like he's tripping over his own feet in his back pedal and it's small mechanical issues that are holding him back right now. That being said, there's been numerous reports that the Panthers love Hunter Cantwell and are marveling at his seemingly endless arm strength.
55% chance to make the roster, 10% chance to be named backup
Tony Pike: 6'6", 222 lbs; Rookie- Cincinnati
The ‘other' QB taken in the 2010 draft was considered to be as high as a 2nd round pick until the combine where a terrible show destroyed Pike's draft status and allowed him to fall to Carolina. Pike is first and foremost a spread QB and from the video we've seen from the Panthers' OTAs he looks clumsy taking snaps under center, which was to be expected. Pike is the kind of player who is a perfect backup for the Panthers because he plays like a taller Chad Pennington, he doesn't make mistakes very often but he has very little arm strength. If there was a situation where he would be needed to step up Pike couldn't make the deep throws, but he could hand off and make short passes where needed. To be in that position though he'll need to make big strides in training camp.
45% chance to make the roster, 2% chance to be named backup

Hopefully they give Moore his chance
When the panthers drafted Clausen, i was excited at the possibility of a future franchise QB. Or a good insurance policy if Moore ever faltered during the season. But i really want Moore to come out of the gates come week 1 of the season, regardless of how Jimmy Clausen does in training camp. The way Moore played at the end of the season had given me hope and helped ease the sting of losing the best QB in franchise history(delhomme). Jimmy needs to sit back for a season and really get a grasp on the offense, but i also think he should be the immediate backup to Moore.
As far as Cantwell and Pike are concerned, i think Pike should be the third string. I just can’t seem to get into what Cantwell is selling. He doesn’t strike me as a potential franchise QB if anything ever happened to Moore. Pike in my opinion has more upside than Cantwell does, and i’m positive that with his stature and a little more time in the weight room getting stronger, he’ll have the potential to compete with Moore or Clausen if either of them falter during their time as starter.
This year is going to be one heck of a ride! Looking forward to it!!!

Pike
would take longer to adapt to the NFL then any of these guys – he would have to stay with the team for at least two seasons before he becomes good enough to even backup the starting QB.
Cantwell for a long time was consider ed one of the top QB prosepects coming out of college. I think with his size and arm he is likely to be more effective than Pike.
Idk
Idk what it is i just don’t seem that much in Cantwell…
Who ever we do keep i hope he’ll be a serviceable backup or even a starter. Cuz Lord knows i don’t want to be part of another QB search and then have some one like Chris Wienke come to supposedly “save” the franchise.

Any chance of putting both on the PS?
Someone suggested that Edwards might be the “third QB” in a pinch, so maybe Cantwell and Pike get suffed on the PS?

Whoever we try and put on the PS we lose... I almost guarantee it
I think either Cantwell or Pike are lost the same way we picked up Matt Moore in 2007 when the Cowboys tried to stash him on the PS

With Cantwell
still taking reps with the 2nd team, it seems very likely that he will be on the roster and Pike will go on the practice squad. In fact, I won’t be surprised if Cantwell remains the backup even when the season starts. I mean, John Fox has not gone anywhere yet.
Cantwell is still eligible, he's only spent one accrued year on the PS.

Might be misinformed but..
I thought you couldn’t go back to the PS if you have been on the active roster for 9.5 games?
He was only active for 5 games

Wow look at those colleges
Oregon State is in the Pac-10, but they’re not exactly a perennial favorite to win the Rose Bowl, Notre Dame isn’t in a conference (and they haven’t produced any talented QB’s of late), Louisville – Big East, Cincinnati – Big East. Never looked at it that way before. If they get good production out of the position, it will speak a lot for Rip Scherer.
I think we should trade Moore for Mike Vick, dump the other losers, and pick up JaMarcus Russell and Vinny Testaverde from free agency. That would be awesome!
stuff 'bout stuff.
Other Positions
You left out Young…. We could also trade those oft-injured RB’s for some help on the DLINE – I hear Haynesworth is available…

Shoot... I'd trade an RB for Haynesworth...
and the Skins next three 1st round picks.

T.O. would really help the passing game, too.
Any chance we could talk Tiki out of retirement?

Ha!
Why don’t we call up Rodney Peete and ask him to come out of retirement, and while we’re at it why don’t we call up Steve Beuerlien too!

Nah, I think we should only have first-overall draft picks at QB.
Vick, JaMarcus, David Carr, maybe work a trade for Alex Smith. Vinny’s an option, but he’s gonna need some time to get back into football shape.
Tim Couch is still out there, too.

Joking aside
Off that whole list I don’t know that I’d be against going after Alex Smith or T.O. but that would never happen…
No on T.O.
I think T.O. would be too much of a distraction, and considering all we have on the roster are very young QBs, we wouldn’t want them getting pushed around by this guy if he doesn’t get the ball enough…

Let's take another look at Moore
Hat Tip to John Clayton at ESPN for reminding me of this, but have you looked at the Shaun Hill story?
His first 10 NFL games were spread over two seasons, and he goes 7-3. He has a QB rating of 90.5 over that span.
Then he finally gets the starting job in 2009, and every opposing DC spends the summer viewing film of him. How does he start his 2009 season?
3-3, rating of 79.6.
Right now Matt Moore is 6-2 in three seasons with a QB rating of 84.5.
But can you really scheme for both Matt Moore and our run game?
San Francisco’s run offense is not nearly the threat that ours is, especially once Gore takes his usual 2-3 week vacation.
Unofficial Agent for Armanti Edwards, WR #10, Carolina Panthers
Yes
And factor in good wide receiver performance opposite steve smith! Man, we have the potential to be a huge threat this year!!!

Of course
Defensive Coordinators scheme for both the passing and running game every week. And if they can shut down one of them, it makes the easier to contain.
We should still be able to move the ball, we did that when Delhomme was playing his worst ball of the year. But when we get caught in 3rd and 7, or when the clock is winding down and we need a score in a hurry, then you’re talking trouble. That’s if Moore turns out to be more like a UFA QB and less like a Franchise one.
I hope he does great, but I’m not going to get my hopes up. And for what it’s worth, I would have been pretty skeptical that that goofy looking cajun would have been better than Weinke back in 2003.
I think
Moore will do fine under the pressure. And man, if there was one player on the Panthers that i was always embarrassed to talk about, it was Wienke. Man, it was bad enough the way the Qb search was after Collins left but Wienke was BAD!
This year is going to be one heck of a ride! Looking forward to it!!!
by Panther4Life!!! on Jun 18, 2010 4:31 PM EDT up reply actions
yeah...
…but Weinke DOES still hold the single game passing record for the Panthers with 423 yards against the Giants in 2006.
And I do remember Weinke coming in for Delhomme in 2005 agaisnt the Lions and leading the comeback win.
He was a good backup. Not so much a good starter.
Good bye #43. Good luck in Chicago.

It’s something to think about, at any rate.
I’m actually really looking forward to seeing Jimmy play. Granted I hope it doesn’t come to that, because we’ll be in trouble, but still.

Hopefully
There is a game where we are leading in a blow out and we’ll get to see Clausen play in the garbage time… it won’t really matter, but we’ll see what he can do nonetheless.

Let's take another look at Moore
Hat tip to Cyberjag at CSR for reminding me of this, but have you looked at the Tony Romo story?
His first 11 NFL games were spread over two seasons, and he goes 7-4. He has a QB rating of 95.1 over that span.
Then he finally gets the starting job in 2007, and every opposing DC spends the summer viewing film of him. How does he start the season?
5-1, rating of 96.0
Right now Matt Moore is 6-2 in three seasons with a QB rating of 97.3 (IN THE GAMES HE STARTED)
Matt, if you’re reading this, you got way more talent than Shaun Hill, and equal that of Romo. Just keep doing what you’re doing and follow the talent level.

Nice job
The Romo story didn’t occur to me, but now I have something cool to think about as I pop my first weekend beer tonight. :)
We have Stickyhands Baker to handle that job!
No “game ball-to-K ball” grip conversions for him to worry about.

Then you've never read any of the 6 or so posts I wrote about their similarity.
Except for a stable married life, Moore has many similarities to Romo.
You're not the first one to make that comparison.
For anyone interested in a more complete breakdown of Matt Moore, check my scouting report of him. :)

we better not keep Pike over Cantwell
i’m still not even sure why we drafted him
The Pike pick is a headscratcher, no doubt. Possibilities...
1) They were just looking to push Cantwell to work harder
2) Jeff Davidson has some spread offense plays he wants to install (nah)
3) They think he’ll clear waivers and make to the practice squad
4) He’s a great special teams player (nyet)
5) They spent so much time with him pre-draft, it just felt like the right thing to do
6) They f__k’d up this pick in an otherwise great draft

7) They were uncertain about the QB position and Pike held too much value in the 6th round to overlook.

Ding ding.
We have a winner.

You're probably right, but the net result is we now have 4 QBs...
5 if you include Armanti. No way they thought Pike would be better than Moore or Clausen, or even Cantwell in the short term. So the big question is, what do we do with Pike now? It wouldn’t be prudent at this juncture (hmm, I’ve that before) to keep him on the 53 roster. So, I’ve kinda got to go with bmoyer and #3, practice squad. If he doesn’t clear waivers, it was a wasted pick, but often 6/7 rounders end up that way.
I can resist everything except temptation. - Oscar Wilde
Not with this team.
They usually keep all their picks around for a few years, regardless of the round. I don’t know how other teams do it. I just believe they were thinking way too far ahead. They probably got Pike for when we eventually get rid of Moore or Clausen due to cap room. By then I doubt Cantwell will be with the team.
That whole business about him being too valuable to pass up in that round is ridiculous media junk they spout out, like with every other interview. No way they pick a guy at a position they feel they’ve solved. Pike isn’t going to get hardly any playing time, except a little tiny bit in the preseason, so his value will likely not increase for trading purposes.
stuff 'bout stuff.

Gonna go out on a limb and say it...
I believe Pike was a wasted pick, regardless of value.
Unofficial Agent for Armanti Edwards, WR #10, Carolina Panthers
Edwards MIGHT have a few trick plays drawn up for him, but otherwise he's not a QB on this roster.
If Pike shows more potential than Cantwell then Hunter will be shown the door. Competition is a good thing, especially with a 6th round pick.
"You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend: Those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig."
Emergency/Wildcat QB
I could see a couple scenarios…
-Armanti makes the 53 man roster at WR as expected with a stable of gadget plays in place for him, as well as some possible Wildcat plays, maybe in additon to KR/PR duties.
-Panthers see a need to fill the typical 3rd QB spot with something other than a QB for a week, so Armanti is listed as the 3rd string or emergency QB.
Unofficial Agent for Armanti Edwards, WR #10, Carolina Panthers
Can't really do that the way the rules are...
If you put your 3rd QB in the game, the starter can’t come back in.
I can resist everything except temptation. - Oscar Wilde
8) They accidently wrote down the wrong name on draft day, and didn’t want to look stupid so they just went along with it.
stuff 'bout stuff.

9. Wide receivers liked the "no practice" practice from last year, and Pike was brought in to throw them nice gentle easy passes, with no velocity or chance to break a finger
