Panthers Paw Prints: Alternative Media; How do You Follow Your Favorite NFL Team?

Good Tuesday morning, Carolina Panthers fans. It's the first day of June, and most of us get back to work today after the Memorial Day holiday. The Panthers still have one more day off before they get back to work tomorrow. I'm sure more news will start flowing out of OTA's over the next 3-4 days. Today, in addition to my normal Panthers links, I wanted to bring some links from other SBNation sites that were of interest to me. If you stumble onto any others you like, let me know and I can post them up. Here are your links for Tuesday June 1, 2010:

Generation Y is coming through, and they are not satisfied with traditional media sources. They look to blogs, social networking sites and other forms of media to follow their favorite NFL team. Here's a list of the teams and how they stack up in terms of alternative media popularity. Notice that the Panthers rank 4th from the bottom in the league. This just means we have lots of room for improvement! (Please forgive me for linking to a Cowboys blog):

NFL Teams and Alternative Media. (BloggingTheBoys.com)

The table below ranks the NFL teams according to the reach they generate with each alternative media tool. Here's what I looked at:

Twitter Followers: Number of Followers as shown on a teams' official Twitter site.

Facebook Fans: Number of Fans on each teams' official Facebook page.

Home Page Traffic Rank: Traffic rank among all US internet sites for the official team homepage (as listed on NFL.com) according to Alexa.com

Team: Panthers   Twitter: 7,899   Page: @cpanthers   Facebook: 29,740   Page: CarolinaPanthers   Homepage Traffic Rank: 26,467

For the record: Charlotte, NC is the 20th largest city in the US as of 2006 (and 7 of the cities above us don't have their own NFL team):

Top 101 biggest cities as of 2006. (City-Data.com)
20. Charlotte, NC (housing, pop. 630,478): 630478

I read the title and instantly knew who would make the list. (All time that is):

NFL Videos: Top 10 little men. (NFL.com)
NFL Total Access counts down the Top 10 players 5'9" and under

More after the jump:

Ridiculously early power rankings from another SBNation site:

My May Power Rankings. (MockingTheDraft.com)
18) Carolina Panthers - We know that they're going to start the season 0-1. They need to be punished for that whooping they gave us. Matt Moore is solid, but we don't know if he's capable of carrying the team.

An outlook for every NFL team going forward from the most popular team blog on SBNation.com (Arrowheadpride.com):

The NFL 2010 Outlook - Post Draft. (Arrowheadpride.com)
Carolina Panthers Last year the Panthers had one playmaker on the team: Steve Smith. Now they have someone to actually throw to him. Clausen has to be one of the biggest steals in the draft. On top of that, Carolina added some solid pieces as they picked up a big wide receiver in LaFell and also a slot wide receiver. Sadly, after that, Carolina’s draft was rather poor, getting another quarterback and a linebacker who doesn’t fit in their system at all.

Pat Yasinskas answers reader questions:

Memorial Day mailbag. (ESPN.com)
Miles in Morganton, NC writes: Seeing as the Carolina Panthers haven't made a splash in the free agent market this year, do you see this as a sign of a rebuilding year for the Panthers?

Pat Yasinskas: I don’t see it as a rebuilding year for the Panthers. They really haven’t done much in free agency since they signed Ken Lucas and Mike Wahle to huge contracts. Their philosophy is to build through the draft and that’s what they’re doing. Yes, they let a bunch of players go in the offseason. But, aside from Julius Peppers, who was a story in himself, all those guys were old and were no longer very significant. I don’t think you can call a team that has Steve Smith, Jordan Gross, Thomas Davis, Jon Beason, Chris Gamble, DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart as its core a rebuilding team.

Ryan in Charlotte writes: In Carolina everybody mentions Matt Moore, Jimmy Clausen, and Tony Pike when talking quarterbacks but what about Hunter Cantwell? I was wondering if you had any information on how he is doing?

Pat Yasinskas: Cantwell is a guy the Panthers like. But, obviously, they drafted two quarterbacks so they don’t think Cantwell’s anything real special. Moore and Clausen will be the top two quarterbacks. Cantwell and Pike will compete for the No. 3 job. The fact the Panthers used a draft pick on Pike probably gives him the edge. Cantwell may end up on the practice squad or somewhere else.

Yasinskas' thoughts on Jerry RIchardson's comments:

Finally, Richardson speaks out. (ESPN.com)
“We have never been a big player in free agency under Marty Hurney,’’ Richardson said. “Many of our best free agent signings have not received much attention when we signed them. Jake Delhomme did not come with a lot of attention when he was signed. Players like Ricky Proehl, Mark Fields, Marlon McCree and Tyler Brayton came to the team with little notice, but were starters and big contributors. The years when we were big players in free agency did not seem to turn out as well. The approach has worked well over eight years and we still have the goal of a championship.’’ That part’s very true. Under Hurney and coach John Fox the Panthers have followed a philosophy of building through the draft. Their fans seem to have forgotten that as there has been outrage about the Panthers letting a lot of aging players go this offseason.

An iffy article on Matt Moore and his status as starting QB for the Panthers:

Matt Moore Will Be Moore Than Enough. (BleacherReport.com)
Now, why would Moore be starter you say, because first reason Jerry Richardson, and John Fox are old school. They know how to train a QB, through development. It was done with Jake, and roughly with Matt. If you don't expect it to be done with Jimmy Cluasen then well be it.

Steep odds, but if you really believe in the Panthers to win the NFC South, you could become a wealthy person:

NFL Betting Odds: 2010 NFC South Odds. (BetFirms.com)
Carolina Panthers: The Panthers finished outside of the top two in this division for the first time since 2004, and a lot of it had to do with the inconsistent play of former quarterback Jake Delhomme. Back up Matt Moore replaced Delhomme at the end of the season and had this team playing well, and figures to be the starter heading into the 2010 season. Moore could have some competition for his job real soon though, as the Panthers grabbed Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen in the draft. They also added wide out Brandon LaFell in the third round, and he could make an impact right away. The defense suffered a huge blow with defensive end Julius Peppers signing with the Chicago Bears, but still have some talent to be competitive. Bet the Panthers +550 to win the NFC South at Sportsbook.com.

I love community outreach. Especially when it involves kids, fitness and the Panthers (3 of my favorite things):

Carolina Panthers Training Camp Open to Youth. (RockyMountTelegram.com)
The Tar River Region United Way and the Harrison Family YMCA are accepting area youth to enter a free Carolina Panthers training camp. The camp will take place on July 15 at the Harrison Family YMCA. Registration is required. The Jr. Training Camp is a free, grassroots sports program designed to encourage children to become more physically fit.

Speaking of alternative media: Here's a question I had for (Panthers beat writer) Darin Gantt on Twitter:

bmoyer83: @daringantt: I really enjoy reading your Panthers articles. Question: How many WR do you think will make the 53 man roster and which ones?

daringantt: No more than six, and it's going to get tight.

daringantt: Figure Smith, Jarrett, LaFell and Edwards are locks. Wallace Wright (ST) is probably a lock too. That's one spot (if that one) for the rest.

daringantt: Guys like Kenny Moore, Charly Martin, David Gettis, Trent Guy are going to have a fight on their hands all summer. Should be interesting.

No problem linking any SBN site, even the Cowboys

but I do hate to hear the ‘Americas team’ crap though. I find it interesting the Chiefs site is #1. You can’t say it takes a winning team to build a following. Their analysis of our draft though could be on the money. We don’t know if Norwood is a fit, we know little of the 3 DB’s or Gettis and we don’t know if Hardy will stay healthy. But I am confident Clausen, LaFell and Edwards will be players.

Wait, what?
They know how to train a QB, through development. It was done with Jake…

None of that is true. Honestly, nothing I just quoted is even remotely true, and the article is wrong in a whole bunch of ways, but those two points are particularly egregious.

Bmoyer, you’re absolutely right in calling the BleacherReport article “iffy”, and that might understate how bad it is. I counted, without trying, 5 horrid typos. (“Jimmy Clusen was busted twice on different occasions. I don’t know if it was a just a collage thing or not…” What, like Clusen [sic] was scrap-booking? I hate BleacherReport.)

I may stop linking to most of their articles.

This time of year, it’s tought to find Panther-specific news. Aside from mis-information and typos, they also seem to jump on breaking news and blow it out of proportion into something its not. I will keep reading their articles, but maybe only post the “good” ones.

I usually avoid BR unless its to make fun of something written

They have a couple good writers but the rest are rookies at best. Eric Q was one I liked but he’s with the Growl now. But you have to understand that is what BR is all about. They don’t claim to be Pro’s, they are non-journalists like us with very little requirements for qualifications (obviously).

I’m not going to dog someone for typos as I make them all the time but I get annoyed with posts that fail to carry much less make a point. The Moore article is a good example, its all over the place topic-wise and has gross errors (Moore was not drafted). Hence I don’t read BR much, its a waste of time usually. In fact I’m always surprised when I run across something well-written on BR.

I don't know about the most popular

…but the most impressive SB blog I’ve read is the Bronco’s blog, Mile High Report. They’ve got a great blog there, with fantastic participation and great articles from people who really understand the Xs and Os. Plus, they’re very welcoming to outsiders who just join for a week to discuss the upcoming game.

by r3 on Jun 1, 2010 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Here's a start.

They are not all SBNation blogs. They’re ranked in terms of links to and from other popular blogs (not total members or total page views), but it might give you a rough idea.

The top 10 Little Men list from NFL.com is interesting...

the only folks ahead of Steve Smith are three Hall Of Famers and Sam Mills, who may just make it to the HoF at some point. I can’t argue with any of that.

I think the "football people" know that Smitty would be the best WR of this era if:

He had a QB that was able to utilize his talents more effectively. AND, If he was in a pass-first system. In Carolina, aside from maybe one or two seasons, Steve has not been used to move the chains, but almost exclusively as a deep threat. Its unfortunate, really, considering how much of Steve’s talent has been left on the table throughout his career. He should put up his 2005 type numbers every year (105 catches, 1500+ yards, 12 TDs). Maybe he will now that he doesn’t have to run “clear-outs” for Moose.

Do or do not. There is no try.

I feel like Steve Smith has wasted years caused by a lack of a #2 threat too. He is targeted often, at least I am pretty sure he is, but I would guess he would have better production if he had a better #2.

Double Trouble. #89. A QB who can protect the ball. Gary "the broad side of a " Barnidge. One of the very best O-lines in the league. A few young talented WRs with a lot of upside. The best FB to come out in the Draft in a long long time.

A top 5 secondary. An awesome LB corp. A 325 lb. wall on wheels in Leonard. A 306 lb. Tank that is as strong as his name suggests. Eric Norwood and Everette Brown coming off the edges too fast. Ol reliable Brayton and Johnson.

A totally new Special Teams unit. With the Jets best gunner in Wallace Wright, the Cardinals ST captain Aaron Francisco, Marcus Hudson, Fast as you want to be Brian Witherspoon.

This is one hell of a football team! This Football team is very young and set up to have success for years to come. This is the foundation of a Dynasty!!!!

“Sadly, after that, Carolina’s draft was rather poor, getting another quarterback and a linebacker who doesn’t fit in their system at all.”

Sadly, that’s ridiculous. Norwood isn’t a Meeks player? Right, of course, they just took a dart and threw it at a piece of paper, whichever name it hit, we took. Can’t wait to see the Chiefs have another spectacular 4-12 season.

The guys at Arrowhead Pride run a fantastic blog for Chiefs fans...

That being said, they don’t understand the Panthers, no would I expect them to.

I could write a dissertation on how insane it was to take Dexter McCluster with Zane Beadles on the board, but I don’t feign to understand the Chiefs front office.

Exactly.

It seems every other team wants to look at the entire NFL and grade other teams they know little about, instead of just focusing on their own newly acquired talent. I’ve yet to see a CSR run down of other teams and how players don’t fit in their defense. We’d probably sound more than a little foolish to their fans. A for effort, not so much for accuracy.

To me "poor fit" only applies in two instances.

Someone who is used to playing in 3-4 vs. 4-3 (one but not the other). Or lean & fast for the position versus big & bulky for the position). Other than that, I’m not sure how someone can be a poor fit…

by bmoyer on Jun 2, 2010 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Norwood fits any scheme, really

He is perfect, in my opinion, as an edge-rusher in Meeks’ scheme. I’d like to see him blitzing and putting a hand in the dirt more often than not, because if I recall, he is average in coverage but great when released to be a force in the opponent’s backfield.

Do or do not. There is no try.
