Good, serious interview with Smitty -- he's turned into the wise elder statesman.

Here are some of the quotes I took from it:

(About Moore) “He’s throwing great balls and making great reads…I support Matt and he’s our QB…Jimmy’s got a tough task to dethrone him…it’s better to have 2 great QB’s than 2 slouches…IMO, we’ve got 2 good, young, potentially great QB’s.”

He really seems to value Moore's little bit of experience over the rookie

It’s almost like he thinks proven, veteran, starting experience is important. Hmmm… I wonder what other positions on the team this might also apply to??? Maybe the entire D-line?

Come on ST... or.. EB... (I still read ElBacon)

Why link a positive to a negative? haha

Though, I’ll admit you make a good point. Growing pains are going to suck, yes, but I think we’re going to see more success in the long run. A little pain now for a lot of joy later.

There's nothing negative about bacon

Growing pains I can agree with. But it seems like the staff could stick Brobee and Foofa out there and some around here would have no doubt that they’ll dominate.

I’m just trying to be excited about things I can still be excited about in December.

And by the way, Brobee loves to color.

Tremendous. Brobee and Foofa? You've outdone yourself, Sir.

I wonder how long it will take Beason to tell the front office (again) through the media that he needs a fatty or two in front of him. Beast was downright struggling early last year before we got Moby Hollis.

If Beast and TD get covered up by TEs and Gs, we are going to be in trouble….They HAVE to be able to run free. If I’m an OC, I look for ways to exploit our line, as it sits today.

Do or do not. There is no try.

I'm concerned that our DT's couldn't beat out Hollis

And now they’re our only hope.

by ElBacano on May 6, 2010 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions

But Hollis played more than adequately -- were he not aged, he'd still be there.

And Leonard and Tyler weren’t ABLE to beat him out, as they were injured, causing him to be hired in the first place.

This doesn’t say they were inferior to his high standard of play. As well as he filled in, either or both of them might have proved themselves even more valuable. I grant you Hayden is a weak link, and we don’t know how Irwin will turn out, but the other 2 are not rookies, or unskilled labor.

Dude.

Leonard was traded for at the end of preseason, he had one full game of action, then broke his leg. Thomas didn’t come in until week five against the Skins. Because we lost Leonard. Tyler came in week six and played vs the Bills. He was slowly getting more and more into the rotation, then he sprained his ankle.

Good bye #43. Good luck in Chicago.

by Flowing Willow on May 7, 2010 3:34 AM EDT up reply actions

Ditto.

This is why the Panthers didn’t look to “upgrade” the DT position. They felt like they already had. Injuries just took out the guys they brought in to fill that void. It’ll take sustained time on the field to know if Leonard and Tyler give us what we need. No doubt, the Panthers are rolling the dice here. But you’ve got to figure the coaches evaluated them enough to bring them in…and then they were happy with what they got before the injuries struck.

I dont think he cares

I think he just wants to look at it the way he is.

Thomas Davis, Jon Beason, Eric Norwood, Dan Conner, James Anderson, and Jamar Williams are our LB corp!!!!

Tank (306) and Leonard (325) will stop the run and collapse the pocket! I promise!

Our front 7 will be BEAST!

Have you seen Brobee's arm span

I would trade next year’s second round pick for him if he was a little heavier and think of what kind of stand up/waiting end he could be. Upside B+.

Downside-C- he is imaginary and my lttle daughter would replace a beer buddy at the game.

Nuff said. Mono’s definitely has the most athletic build.

BTW… wasn’t sure if you guys would pick up on my Gabba references. I’m impressed!

Pretty chill

He didn’t go over the “Rules and Regulations” of the game, but he kept it cool and eased my thoughts for the upcoming season.

by Panther4lyfe on May 5, 2010 9:55 PM EDT reply actions

I noticed he seemed a bit uneasy to lead off with a Clausen question...

and he made a point to bring it back to Moore and point out that Moore was the starter.

Just an observation.

I think he's just being careful with his words

If Smitty said something about Clausen on ESPN, media would be all over that by tomorrow:
“Steve Smith Has No Confidence In Moore”
I think Smitty did a great job giving Moore the confidence he deserves and also not leaving Clausen out of the equation.

Steve Smith pretty much restated everything I've been saying all this time.

Matt Moore’s been here for 5 years now, and he had a great end of the year last year. He deserves the job, why would you hand the job off to a rookie?

That’s what he’s thinking at least, but he caught himself at the end of the interview and made the politically correct statement that it’s better to have two good QB’s then to have two slouches.

I wonder how far we’ll get this season?

It's all going to hinge on preseason

If Moore comes out and performs like he has previous preseasons (pretty terribly) and Clausen sets the field on fire he’ll lose the job.

Realistically though, it’s highly unlikely that’s going to happen.

Definately.

And if they come out even with each other, expect John Fox to side with the veteran.

Even the influence of the media, who will naturally side with Clausen, can’t come close to changing his mind.

I wonder how much not having a contract next season will infuence Fox?

We could see a less patient, more cutthroat Fox this season where he has to perform to get a contract. It makes me wonder how much veteran influence alone will have in his decisions?

His natural inclination to veterans will come out

Because he’s in a tough spot, he’s likely to return to his old habits.

Good thing there are no vets on the roster. :P

Good bye #43. Good luck in Chicago.

The more I read

the less I get the feeling that Fox wants to come back. I hope it is a smoke screen.

by adamwanderer on May 6, 2010 9:37 AM EDT up reply actions

If Foxy isn't a Panther next year..

He will have his choice of half a dozen teams beating his door down willing to pay him big bucks. Why should Foxy be the least bit nervous?

by patosan on May 6, 2010 10:11 AM EDT up reply actions

He's already getting $6 million, isn't he?

How much more would he get elsewhere. And he never struck me as type who wanted total control, like GM/HC.

I think he gets along well with Hurney, the players, his assistants, and JR – I think he stays. (And I’m basing some of that on my innate optimism that the team does well this year, and makes the playoffs.)

by bigdavis on May 6, 2010 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

I imagine he'll stay the course.

I don’t confess to know John Fox, but he’s done pretty much the same thing every year he’s been here, even when it hurts this team rather than helps them. ((Foster over Williams anyone?))

Even with the job on the line, it’s not going to change what John Fox does. His players will be more persuaded to play harder though, because they know that if they don’t do good this year, they won’t have their coach back next year!

I do wonder though, how JR negotiations with the players union is affecting his job. I don’t see any reason why John Fox would release so many veterans unless JR set some sort of budget he had to each. I imagine something like that would make him pretty aggravated.

I haven’t seen him smile in a while.

I worry about that

Sometimes it takes Moore a bit to get in his groove and playing as well as he’s capable.. I just hope he’s given ample time to prove he can do it rather than Fox jumping the gun. I still don’t really trust Fox’s decision making when it comes to QBs, he’s gotta earn that trust back.

by EyeSack on May 6, 2010 12:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Jitters

I think part of Moore’s problems are simply jitters. I think being The Man now, and having all off-season and camps to prepare as The Man will negate the jitters.

by The Duke Dude on May 6, 2010 10:14 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree with that.

The bad throws he made were almost all made in the first few minutes of the games he started — after he settled down (and he never really considered his status last season as the man, which he does now) he was in control of the game.

by bigdavis on May 6, 2010 11:15 AM EDT up reply actions

Plus...

Jake getting cut and not bringing in a FA said a lot about their thoughts about Moore. That definitely had to boost his confidence too.

by The Duke Dude on May 6, 2010 11:20 AM EDT up reply actions

That's a good point that hasn't been made before.

They could’ve gotten Jason Campbell, or Mark Bulger, had they not been sold on Moore.

The fact that they drafted Clausen and Pike has been mentioned many times as a sign of no confidence, but even Moore said he knew they had to bring in somebody, and they went BPA. While Clausen has the college credentials to give him a chance at the job, his being drafted is not in and of itself a sign that there’s no confidence in Moore.

Wrong video?

Is anybody else getting sent to the video of Lawrence Taylor. I even tried search for Steve Smith and the search result video brings it up as well
