New Kickoff Specialist

Panthers find potential replacement for Lloyd E-mail

CHARLOTTE -- The Carolina Panthers signed a potential replacement for kickoff specialist Rhys Lloyd on Tuesday, adding kicker Todd Carter of Grand Valley State.
Carter, who played at Grand Valley from 2005-2008, converted 12 of 17 field goals and 56 of 58 extra points as a senior. However, leg strength is his forte and he has a chance to replace Lloyd, who signed as a free agent this off-season with Minnesota, in the kickoff role.

No kicker had more touchbacks than Lloyd over the last two seasons, but he would have cost the Panthers more than $1.1 million to retain as a restricted free agent. They elected not to submit him a tender offer and let him walk as a free agent. With a $320,000 base salary this season, Carter comes much cheaper.

If Carter doesn't make the team, punter Jason Baker could handle kickoff duties.

For his career Carter converted 27 of 41 field goal attempts with 173 extra points and handled kickoff responsibilities.
