That’s something we don’t hear about the Panthers much. For the first time in a long time I am excited about seeing what the offense is going to look like this season. Sure we’ve had Double Trouble and Smitty (who are always exciting) for the last few years; and don’t get me wrong, they make the game interesting to watch, but for the first time in a long time I’m genuinely excited to see what will happen on the offensive side of the ball. This year is different new QB new WR options and exciting competitions in camp.
More after the jump....
While Moore has been tagged as the starting QB (and I think he will be) there are young hungry players on the roster pushing him and challenging for that spot. The one thing we know is that the Delhomme colored glasses are off and the future looks bright. If Moore should stumble Clausen and Pike are there to put the pressure on. This is truly the first time I have been excited about the QB position and competition (going into a season) since halftime of the 2003 season opener; not that Jake wasn’t exciting, but we knew what we were getting and who would be under center.
As excited as I am about the QB position, WR is what has got me down right giddy. Not to take a line from Fox but well Smitty is what Smitty is, and that’s awesome, but what’s got me really energized is the young crop of WRs. I think with a new QB under center who hasn’t developed Smitty tunnel vision we may see Dwayne Jarrett develop into a threat, I have watched Jarrett and Moore at training camp the last couple years and they have chemistry. But above and beyond that we have LaFell, a big body, hard nose blocker who I think picks up where Moose left off, and adds speed to the position. Then we have the unknown in Edwards, this kid in the open field is as good as any I’ve seen (I know it wasn’t as a WR). If you didn’t see him play in college just wait, I think the Panthers should create excuses to get the ball in his hands, PR, KR, WR, Wildcat, RB are all options to be explored just to get another young athletic and energized player involved in the game. Add to this group David Gettis, Kenny Moore, Mike Goodson, Dexter Jackson, Charly Martin and Oliver Young and you got yourself a competition. I know all of these guys won’t make the roster but training camp sure should be exciting.
I know we don’t go with 4 and 5 wide very often and this may be attributed to the lack of talent in the past but just imagine for a minute, Moore under center with either half of Double Trouble in the backfield, with Jarrett, Lafell, Edwards tripped out to one side and Smitty on the other. Think any coach in the league is going to double up on Smitty and leave a LB or S singled up on any of those guys? Like I said I am excited about the offensive possibilities like never before this year. The youth movement is here and it’s exciting.
