Ok, first off I want to state the purpose of this post.
It isn't to debate whether or not you liked the pick or think he will be good. You can find those arguments and scouting reports elsewhere. This is to address those who were worried about the challenge to Moore and wanted to see him get his chance. We had 1 other QB on our roster, undrafted Hunter Cantwell. Everyone knew we were either going to draft a QB early or sign a veteran at some point. When a potential franchise QB slides to 48, that changes your plans about a DT or WR. The Panthers have consistently gone BPA in the middle rounds (Kalil, Dan Connor, Marshall) and it consistently works out. Claussen was the BPA.
Now, when has having 2 good QB's been a bad thing? Moore will be given his shot to prove himself. If he falters, we have a top QB prospect that will be ready to step in and start developing, Moore leaves as a FA and no harm done. If Claussen looks great in practices and Moore really is the player we think he is, then we've got a great problem. Matt Schaub, Matt Hasselbeck, Charlie Whitehurst. All QB's who developed and then were traded for high draft picks. That gives us a shot to get our 2nd rounder back next year and possibly more.
Now I would be much happier if we had taken Claussen, traded our future 2nd for the no.59 pick to take Golden Tate, and then taken Armanti Edwards or Lafell at 78, but I still love our draft so far. Tomorrow we will be focusing on defensive depth for sure. DE/DT/LB are on the wish list and with all our picks I expect it to be a busy day moving up and down to secure who they really want.
All in all I think the teams future just got a lot brighter today, for 2010 and beyond. Go Panthers!
Edit: The poll is just something I thought of and all in fun.
