Julius Peppers: The Bears' New Beast - @ChrisHarrisNFL
(NOTE: I posted this on the Chicago Bears blog, WindyCityGridiron.com)
Hey... What's goin' with my good-old Chicago Family? I thought I'd drop by, say "hi," and take a minute to share a few thoughts about my good friend, Julius Peppers.
Quite simply… Julius is one of the most dominant players in the league. He'll get double and triple-teamed, and still be able to brush everyone off him. But, even with that being true, he still tends to get a bad rap from people who say he's sometimes out there half-ass'n things, and I promise you that's not true. Sure... Julius doesn't get to the quarterback aaaaaaaaaall the time (Who does?), but that doesn't mean he's slackin'. Some fans and analysts need to understand that you shouldn't equate being a hard-worker by the number of sacks you get - that's simply not a fair way to gauge a player's efforts. Here's the truth of the matter...

ya but how do you feel about julius peppers BS excuses
on why he doesn’t like carolina?
exactly chris!
No body that says we will be better off knows what they are talking about. He will be missed. And I’m pissed off at the whole organization to not do anything and everything to keep him…they should have given him a 7 year deal with 14 mill a season. Shame

Pep can do whatever he wants as a player
That doesn’t mean I need to respect a man who trashes the team who turned him into a star and gave him the opportunity for his $90 million pay day.

So how did he trash the Panthers?
Every quote I read he was trying very hard to be as positive as possible. You were just looking at from a negative perspective and twisting anything that he said.
What he said didn’t need any twisting. You read between the lines and it’s pretty obvious. Furthermore, he contridicts himself all the time.
Feb. 9, regarding the possibility of staying:
“Last year, at the time, that was the option that I wanted most,” Peppers said. “Now it’s not.”
Contradicted less than a month later:
he said the two sides were split by a $6 million difference for a four-year deal – or $1.5 million per year.
“My feeling is they could have done that,” Peppers said. “If they wanted me to stay, it wouldn’t have been that big of a deal.”
then later
“It wasn’t really about the numbers,” he said. “The thing was it’s like there was no incentive to take the deal – for a lot of different reasons, personal reasons that would take days to explain.”
Wait Julius… I thought you said before that is was about 6 million… and before that you said it wasn’t an option.
Or in another interview:
"It was more than me at Carolina, but I was one of the first people there to be a Pro Bowler," said Peppers. "Up here, it’s a different situation with the legacy because I’m adding to one that’s already great."
So… if you say one franchise has a great legacy, and it’s a completely different situation you are inferring that the Panthers have no great legacy. Furthermore, we was the Panthers’ 31st probowler.
Call it ‘twisting’ if you like… I call it ‘being observant’

I have to agree with James on this one...
I’m not mad at Peppers for leaving to play in Chicago – he was an unrestricted free agent and could sign wherever he wanted to. That part doesn’t bother me.
What bothers me is the way he handled the whole ordeal. He didn’t have to give the Panthers fans and management the big F-U by trash talking the organization. (For example, he could have thanked the Panthers instead of just the NFL when he left. He didn’t have to give a 15 minute tear-filled speech about his undying love for Carolina, but he could have at least said thanks to the fans for their support, because you know, Carolina is the franchise that gave him the freaking chance to play in the league, and Panthers fans are the ones who made it possible for him to pocket the millions he has made over the past 8 years with ticket and merchandise sales. But he chose to go down the other path – the path that says “screw you guys, I’m in this for myself and I don’t need any of you”.)
Draft Gilyard!
I agree.
I couldn’t care less about him playing in Chicago. But when Julius Peppers and his agent starts doing things that will hurt the team just because he wants out of Carolina, that kind of crap just blows my mind.
Julius Peppers could have been traded. He should have signed his franchise tag, provided Carolina with with a GOOD list of teams he wanted to be on, and allowed us to trade him for draft picks or compensation. We’d both get what we want. Julius Peppers would get out of Carolina and play on another team, and the Panthers would get high draft picks so that we could pick another player in order to replace him. Everybody wins. And what’s more, the Panther fans would respect Peppers as the great DE he is, and mourn his loss just like we did Jake Delhomme, Brad Hoover, and all of the other veterans we’re losing this year.
Instead, Julius comes out and lies his freaking rear off. You can look above and read a lot of what James has posted, and a lot of it is true. But what about Julius Peppers and his agent talking about how the Panthers hadn’t called them since the end of the season? Then Julius Peppers comes out later and says that there was a 6 million dollar difference between signing him and not signing him? I’m pretty sure you have to talk to a player to make an offer don’t you?
When he left Carolina, he never thanked the organization. He never thanked Jerry Richardson for giving him his first job. He freaking kissed his own ass and left. I can never respect someone like that. The fact that the Panthers remained professional despite the entire ordeal only made me love my Panthers even more.
I’m sorry Chris Harris, but Julius won my disrespect. That’s alright. I still love ya, and I still love da Bears. But Julius….nah~ I’ll hit my veto button there. Matt Moore for President.

I dont care what Harris says
Pep is his friend, and he is going to protect his friend, so i take what he says with a grain of salt. instead, I focus on what I saw, and what i saw with Peppers, and what Brentson Buckner said recently to back me up, is that Pep doesn’t care about football, at least with the Panthers. He takes plays off and is a cancer for a team. its a shame b/c he could be a hall of famer and possibly the best defensive lineman EVER if he got his mind right.
Why would he go out of his way to say things that aren’t true? What does it matter? What could he expect to be a result of that? He said it bcuz it is true point balnk and simple. Buckner hasn’t played with pep in how long? Can I say moot?

Alright
Chris if you read this I wanna say a few things and refer to a few quotes of Julius.
First, I don’t see how yall (players) are not pissed at him for some of the things he said. He said he chose the Bears because “they already have good players at other positions” and bringing him in would help make it a great defense… umm we have better players on defense AND offense so I don’t understand that logic. Then he said he wanted to p;ay for a defensive minded coach like Lovie Smith… umm that’s exactly what John Fox is buddy.
He grew up here, went to college here, and had the undying support of Panther fans. I know the organization wanted to keep him, and tried hard making several great offers throughout the past few years. He said the difference was “$6 million”.. that is ridiculous he would already be making upwards of 80 million so talk about greedy.
Another article contained a Julius gem which stated
"And maybe, he’ll shoot down a reputation for taking plays off, one that he feels is unwarranted.
“Sometimes, you’re on the field, you get tired,” he said. “If I’m not playing as hard on play 66 as I was on play number 1, then … come on.”
wow… about sums it up haha. Julius Peppers is the reason why some people hate pro athletes. There’s a difference between playing tired and not playing hard…
Pep could've easily said..
“I’d like to thank the Panthers front office for the opportunities they have given me and my former teammates for their support. The last 8 years have been invaluable to me, but I believe it’s for the best that we now go our separate ways.”
That’s it. Two sentences would’ve allowed Pep to leave the Panthers a legend missed by all. Instead, we’re stuck watching a soap opera unfold. Oh well, I suppose he likes it that way.
+100000
I would have been perfectly fine with that. Like I said above, he didn’t have to cry on tv for 15 minutes a la Jake Delhomme (nothing wrong with that, btw) – but c’mon, he could have at least thanked Big Cat and Foxy for making him the #2 overall pick ( and he would have been #1 had the Texans not been an expansion team) and giving him the opportunity to make a name for himself, and he could have thanked the rest of the team and fans for their support.
But nooooooo – he had to take the douchebag route. Fine Julius, have it your way. Don’t expect me to wish you well in your future endeavors though.
Draft Gilyard!
What then?
What if the owners have their way and the salery cap comes back next year the same or lower than it is now? How will the Bears count the saleries of Cutler, Peppers, and Urlacher? Ha Ha! Good luck with that. Peppers is a poison pill.
peppers
Guys what planet are you from all this talk about peppers. its a business. He just did to the panthers before they could do it to him. example Hoover or like San Diago did to LT. Pep just got it while he could.

I don't think anyone's upset with Peppers leaving
It’s the lies, slander and BS that followed his departure that’s annoying people.
