Vikings sign former Panther Kickoff Specialist Rhys Lloyd.
The first of Panther players to be signed to a contract, the Panthers would not afford the 1.01 million dollars it would take to sign him to the lowest RFA tender. Look for a kicker in the later rounds of the draft, John Kasey has a reliable leg but it's not getting there from 50+ yards and on.

Good luck to the booming Brit
He should be kicking it through the posts all the time in that dome.

I would say look for a UDFA KO specialist
Only one or two kickers worth drafting in this draft class…more likely to keep Kasay and get a guy to boom it.
I guess Ryan Longwell is loosing some of his distance too.

Nope...
…they’re talking about Jason Baker handling kickoffs and punts with Kasay doing the FGs. We’ll go back to carrying only one kicker.
this is fine....and explains the move to get one of the best "gunners" in the league in Wright

Where did you hear they are talking about that?
And how is Baker at kickoffs? I have no clue.

I not sure of Spicer's source
But this is how we were doing it for a while before Lloyd came on board.

Isn't that why we got Lloyd?
Wasn’t it because Baker couldn’t kick it in the endzone to save his life that we went out and signed Lloyd in the first place?
Correct me if I’m wrong, because I’m basing this off of sketchy memories and not facts.
Draft Gilyard!
Perhaps that's why Lloyd was brought in, but maybe Baker has worked on his kickoffs
and maybe the idea is to add speed to our kick coverage units to counter this, idk.

Plus
I don’t recall any of us demanding that a kickoff specialist be brought in a couple off-seasons ago. I might point out that our kick coverage was worse with Lloyd, which could be attributed to other factors, not Lloyd, but maybe he was out-kicking his coverage?

It wasn't Baker, it was Kasay doing kickoffs
Kasay was doing kickoffs and field goals, and Baker was just punts. Lloyd was brought in when aging Kasay stopped being able to get it in the endzone. Correct me if I am completely off on this one?

I don't have any games from 07 or earlier left on the ole DVR
but I am thinking Baker did kickoff for a season or two.

The next announcement will be...
we’ll only carry about 40 guys on the roster…a million dollars doesn’t buy what it used to

:(
I loved it when it went through the uprights.

I pulled the stats on Lloyd from the 2009 season, and I was shocked quite frankly.
- Tied 4th in the NFL in touchbacks
- 6th in the NFL in length of kickoff (not including return)
- 6th in the NFL in percentage of kickoffs for touchbacks
I was strongly under the impression he led in all of these areas, and quite frankly it makes me feel a little better about losing him and going with a rookie.
Matt Prater of Denver, and David Buehler of Dallas led the NFL in the above categories- Buehler was a 5th round pick in 2009 and Prater was an UDFA in 2007. I think we’ll be able to find someone.

In 2008, I believe he led both of those catagories...
I guess the ‘K-Ball’ finally got the scouting report on Rhys.

2008 statistics
- 1st in the NFL in touchbacks
- 2nd in the NFL in length of kickoff (not including return)
- 1st in the NFL in percentage of kickoffs for touchbacks
and for good measure… 2007, where he only kicked a few times (so the number of touchbacks wont be fair, but % and length are)
- Tied 29th in NFL in touchbacks
- 10th in the NFL in length of kickoff (not including return)
- 1st in NFL in percentage of kickoffs for touchbacks

His stats came down because...
…teams started realizing our coverage units were inept. Thus, Rhys outkicked them and even if guys caught the ball in the endzone, they still had plenty of time to run it out. If we even had a halfway decent set of gunners, Rhys probably would have kept his stats higher. But, the youth movement started last season on special teams and we reaped the “benefits” of that, because we had a bunch of inexperienced guys…and a special teams coach who couldn’t cope with that.
But that’s just my two-cents,
—Neil
It's crazy what a difference inexperience can make
