A following up toJames' fan post, but without an official announcement it sure appears Lloyd has signed with another team. All of these were posted around 7:30 (EST) this morning.

My guess

The Panthers are looking to find Kasay’s replacement. Lloyd wasn’t the answer at PK and with Kasay getting older (although got the job done last year), they want to start finding someone with both skills again.

I should add I don’t think Kasay will be replaced this year but will carry two and then next year he might be gone.

Can you imagine what it will be like to see another kicker?

Kasay has been the kicker for the entire 15 years of existence. It’s going to be strange to see another kicker when Kasay is gone – whether that be next year or 3 years from now.

We will need to find a KO specialist if Kasay stays

Boy the Panthers are cutting all they can…getting worrisome.

Darin Gantt is right on the money with this one. You can find an UDFA who can be a kickoff specialist and pay him $320k… Lloyd would make a min of $750k.

You're kidding me Davis.

Don’t you understand? The world won’t exist in 2011! It doesn’t make a bit of difference, lol!

It's really a good move...

When the CBA is renegotiated it’s certainly going to contain a lower salary cap, and Big Cat is saving his money now so he can sign players in 2011 and beyond when the owners know what the new cap is going to be. There will be no scrambling to make room for roster spots because of teams signing guys to big contracts (like the Bears are doing).

In 2011 this team will be in a good spot because we will have cap space to work with.

I'm thinking the opposite bigdavis

If there’s a work stoppage teams can cut players again like 2010 with no repercussions, so if that was the case and Richardson thought it would happen then I think he’d retain these players and cut them next offseason.

This shows me that the discussions may be closer to a resolution than we think. I believe the union will relent and allow for a slight reduction in the cap (5-10%) in exchange for some concessions (allowing players to be franchised once?).

If that’s the case and Richardson believes an agreement is close it makes more sense to lose a lot of these players now to be financially sound for the 2011 season and beyond.

I was thinking more along these lines...

That it’s evident the Panthers are avoiding any contract extensions, or signings of FAs, that include 2011. If there were no play that year, this keeps player payroll to a minimum.

For example, the Bears on now on the hook for Peppers for a big chunk, including 2011, whether or not the league plays that year.

Just a thought. In any event, he’s obviously keeping his options open, and his payroll down.

This'll be interesting to keep an eye on.

I’ll bet the Panthers are looking towards the Draft. We need to get a guy with a big leg though, I don’t want the Panthers to return to epic suckage of suck when it comes to our special teams.

bad year for kickers

but I’m sure we can find a big leg to boom it into the endzone

Big leg...

They’re easy to get when all they have to do is hit the endzone instead of splitting the uprights. I like your “epic suckage of suck”.

Haha. Well I don't know how else to discribe it!

Our special teams coverage was so bad, Steve Urkel could sneak it to the endzone.

He played his college ball in Minnesota

I think his family lives there. This move makes sense.

We can better spend our late round selections.

Just sign a kicker in UDFA or regular FA.
