My Thoughts on Jake Delhomme Being Cut from the Panthers - @ChrisHarrisNFL
So... Jake Delhomme was cut from the Panthers. What are you guys thinkin' about it?
My two cents say that Jake was one heckuva leader and has been a great service to the Panthers. He had some great years here in Carolina - especially when we made that run at the Super Bowl in '08. There's not a doubt in my mind that this dude - a guy who's not only a great QB, but also a really funny person to have in the locker room - is definitely gonna be missed. It looks like the team is on a bit of a youth movement. I say that, but - really - I don't know for sure. I'm not really at liberty to say, because I don't know what anyone upstairs is truly thinking. One thing is for certain, though... Management has the team's best interests in mind as they prep us to be a team that's gonna be Super Bowl bound. I don't always have to agree with everything they do (don't get me wrong... I'm not claiming to be against what they're doing now), but I always trust their judgement, because they, along with all of us players, simply wanna do what we gotta do to win.
So with all the above said... LET'S GO 2010 PANTHERS!
(Oh, and one more thing... I'm working on an article about what it's like to be a player who's just been dealt to another team. Look forward to it. It's gunna be good.)

Whether they're good people or not...
It all boils down to business decisions.
Jake, Kemo, Lewis, Diggs
will all be missed
I was wondering
when you’d have the time to weigh in Chris… thanks for the input
and come on guys, we have one of our own players letting us inside his head… we should be rec’ing the heck out of this post!!!
Thanks for the inside thoughts.
We know that you have to watch what you say, but we appreciate you sharing your thoughts and feelings. You guys have our full support in 2010.
BTW when Chicago comes to town, make that the worst game of JP’s life.

Thanks Chris
I really think Delhomme should be brought back as a coach.

I think he'd rather go somewhere and be a starting NFL quarterback.
Surely he appreciates your offer, though.

He should get that opportunity, Michael.
Do you have a list of teams where he might find himself competing for the starting job in August?
Do or do not. There is no try.

thanks for sharing your thoughts Chris....
Jake will surely be missed. It’s hard to imagine the Panthers without him. Great guy, great leader and provided us with some great memories over the years.
But I’m excited for the evolution of the team and can’t wait for next season! SB Bound in 2010!
It's good to know what a player thinks...
And I’m glad you share this stuff with us, Chris. It’s cool that we can connect with a player like we do with you. Looking forward to your inside look on what a player feels when he is traded.
Draft Gilyard!
Chris Harris you truly are the man
On the field you are a hard hitting, fumble causing machine, but I think it’s even more amazing that you care enough about us diehard fans to keep such contact. I read everything you post and think you are quite an asset to this site. None of us can imagine what the players are thinking and it’s really cool that you take the time to give us your thoughts. Thank you man. Been a Panthers fan my whole life and I have always enjoyed your play and momentum changers
Pickup games
I think it is incredible that we have an active player weighing in and each and every time I see input from him I go through the same pleased shock.
I think we can all relate to what it feels like as teams are being picked even back to the playground. We all want to be picked because we want to play and well we don’t want to be not be wanted. I think that applies whether it is kickball, a pickup game of basketball or I’d imagine professional sports free agency. Generally speaking athletes of this caliber have rarely been the last picked at anything so I imagine this is a humbling and somewhat frightening time.
I understand that it is business, but the mindset that “it’s just business it isn’t personal” is frustrating to me as I can’t imagine anything more personal. Even as a small business owner one recognizes that ones way of making a living is a very personal thing. Combine that with a passion for game or business…it has to be personal at some level.
I wish all the players and their families the best as they move on/relocate. Here’s hoping we get to keep the Hitman around for as long as he wants to be here.

Great Guy
Delhomme was a class act and probably the best QB in Panthers history. I wish him well in his future endevours, where ever that may take him. I wouldn’t mind seeing him back as a coach one day like chinchillas said though.
Also, thanks for your insight Chris. Always good to get a players perspective on things.
Great to hear your thoughts, Chris!
It was certainly a shocker for us… Going to be an interesting year but like Tater said, the slogan remains the same!
Cant wait to read that article!
Pepp
I find it hilarious (and rightfully so) that Peppers is getting no love and delhomme (end of an era, best qb in franchise) is getting praised and remembered. Peppers for some reason (he already has tons of money) decides to leave his home team and state for windy cold Chicago where he has no ties. Delhomme truly was a class act through and through, never once complained or whined
You have to ask a question then.
Who was loyal to his team?
Moose left and we all didn’t like him. He gave into the dark side and fell into sin, cussing out Chicago and telling them off again and again. We’re just lucky that he found the true path and came back to Christ in Carolina.
Will Julius Peppers do the same thing? Will he find Christ? Lol!
"Once again the trousers of evil are yanked down by the mocking hands of justice!"-Revshawn
WRONG
Chicago is giving him $20 million for the first year, and about $42 mil guaranteed. he isn’t worth it. chicago will regret the move before Pep. I could see Pep getting close to 20 sacks next year, his best ever, and then it’s all downhill after that (6-8 sacks a season for three or four, and then he retires)
He first bad game and the Chi-town fans won't be as forgiving as ours
Just wait until they are booing him. He never got booed in Carolina (that I know of).

Just Thought I'd Drop By
And say that I truly became interested in the NFL in the early stages of 2003 and was always interested in the Panthers due to it being a vacation spot from when I was younger. When I finally started watching the NFL I couldn’t help but fall in love with Jake Delhomme as he led the team to the Super Bowl.
Just want to say that I’ll miss him and I’ll always have his jersey hanging in my closet as a reminder of him.

Pure class, that Marty Hurney!
on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city
There’s no connection, just a bizarre similarity.
Hurney flew to Chicago to meet with Jake Delhomme’s agent in person to cover his release. It’s just a coincidence that Peppers signed there the next day

Hurney literally went out of his way (!) to tell Jake's agent face to face, rather than the impersonal way the business is usually conducted.
It makes me think that Fox and Hurney had not given up on Jake themselves, but got their orders from Richardson — their emotional comments about Jake at the Press Conference was almost not business as usual, but could be understood if taken in that light. Just my guess.
But it does speak highly of Hurney’s professionalism.
Absolutely nothing!
But I don’t know what to make of this. Either Hurney’s a really good guy, going to unparalleled lengths for players. OR him and Foxy are way to emotionally attached to guys. It’s probably a bit of both.

What the hell is up with that quip...
“50% class, that Marty Hurney!” It seems as if Jon Bois knows as much about class as Charlotte’s less frenchy named John Boy. While other coaches and FO personnel were waiting at the doors of their future stars to wine and dine them into leaving (Lovie), our guys were making sure the guys we cut knew how much they meant.
Jon Bois, opportunism is the former situation, class is the latter.

Yeah. I wish he could have stayed on as a backup or something. Just can’t pay him that much money to ride the bench…..
Member of Canes Country and the Cat Scratch Reader
We'll pay any other backup the same salary. I don't think it was that much.
I think its tough because Jake’s a good guy… But it needed to be done.
on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city
It did... not just for the organization, but for Jake
He said it himself, he wouldn’t have been happy as the backup. There are teams out there who will jump at Jake and give him a shot to compete for the starting position. The Panthers were going to have to transition to a new QB in a few years anyway, and Moore’s play justified giving him a shot.
It’s a testament to not only Delhomme’s character, but that of the Carolina Panthers to how emotional the front office, and Jake were… and that by his own admission there are no ill feelings. Jake was the Panthers QB for seven season, compare the reaction to his release with that of Drew Bledsoe who played for nine seasons and was released by New England under very similar circumstances.

The best part of your Bledsoe comparison
Is the following performance of the no-name guy behind him. :)
I think we’d all love to see him start somewhere once again. But news to Delhomme… You very well might not be starting anywhere.

We lost 13 mil with Jake
Saved 5 with Lewis. Johnson and Diggs probably saved another 4-5. But while we lose money this season, we gain money against the cap in future years.

It's not really losing money at all
The guaranteed portion would be required whether they were cut now, or in 2 years.

This is not as much about saving money as it is dumping salaries
Richardson is taking advantage of an uncapped year to unload big contracts. Even though it hurts a little now, it’s actually a smart move because we won’t have to pay those under future caps. And we’ll be able to build purely off of necessity.

JR is making sure when the new CBA is agreed upon the Panthers are under the cap and have room to operate

+1
Regardless of what they say about the decision to cut Jake, it was a brilliant business move. Pay the money now while there is no cap, instead of paying it under a cap over 3-4 years. That way we have money free to sign a FA in 2011 and beyond, and can fill positions of need with quality players instead of also-rans because we have no cap space.
Draft Gilyard!
Only 9 players making over a million???
We are WELL under any potential future cap. No doubt he’s unloading any waste, and starting fresh. For all he knows there might not even be a 2011 season.
