Editor's note: Panthers continue to make really big moves this offseason. Jay Glazer reports the Panthers have cut Jake Delhomme, thereby paying him the guaranteed portion of his contract.

Many fans have gotten their wish tonight, but rather than berate Delhomme for his poor performance, let's remember arguably the greatest QB in Panther history.

my exact thought

That exact thought went through my head as I read the news.

Whoa!!!!!

I’m speechless!

I just hope it was an amicable cut

The #17 definitely deserves to be retired, and Jake deserves to ride off into the sunset to tend to his horses… or whatever he desires

I know i'm a Giants fan but....

His number retired? really? Two 20 TD seasons does not a retired number make.

Give us a break

That 2-20 TD season QB is the best in our franchises short history!

i know

i just think you shouldn’t rush to retire just anyone because they’re the only great you have at that position – kinda cheapens your retired numbers.

you’ll look back decades from now and see delhomme next to steve smith and jon beason and either of your great RBs(assuming of course) and say, “what were we thinking?” the Jets fans can say the same thing about Broadway Joe, except he brought them a trophy.

i’m looking out for you guys, i like the panthers(Foxy!) even tho y’all kicked our ass last year!

Jake was more than the numbers

Other fans don’t understand that. He led the team to an NFC Championship, and a superbowl appearance and was a probowler.

But will that hold up as the years get longer?

and hopefully you guys get a few rings, and HOFers. then your gonna say you probably jumped the gun on Delhomme.

Like with the Giants, we have many “good players”, that went to pro bowls, and even won championships. but we don’t retire there number. just ask joe morris, oj anderson, pepper johnson, and jesse armstead. but they’re always invited back for big games, just not in the upper echelon.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

He is(except for this season), although it can be debatable that your SS has reached his peak and ours is not yet seen his. but i don’t mind calling ours the other steve smith. badge of honor.

yours is a true beast tho. kind of the allen iverson of the NFL. way too little to be doing what he does. when he took that hit last season against us where our safety(i think it was michael johnson) hit him full force, breaking his wrist, and yet your boy shrugged it off and trotted into the endzone never even coming close to dropping the ball, well that sealed the deal on my admiration for him. although i’ve been on his bandwagon way b4 that. now if he can just stop punching his teammates at practice…….

by wilddre22 on Mar 4, 2010 11:16 PM EST up reply actions

Preeeciate that!

He is thought very highly around here… We just assume when he T’s off on a guy, that he had it coming ;)

Actually I really wanted the Panthers to sign your Smith instead of Jarrett. He would have been perfect for this offense. And how confusing would that have been for DBs… “Ok you cover Smith… Which one?!?!”

lol that would've been a commentators nightmare!

how would they differentiate them on there jersey? they’d both be s.smith! guess they’d have to go to middle initials.

I'm sure our Smith would be fine with nothing but a big "89"

by southtunnel on Mar 5, 2010 10:44 AM EST up reply actions

I do think #17 should be retired

but I am a little hesitant about it. One one hand, he did take us to our first Super Bowl, on the other hand, he doesn’t have great stats. Ultimately the thing that will seal the deal is if we have another #17 on the roster in the future and he starts, us old farts will be getting flashbacks of Delhomme’s bad moments that may be damaging to our health. :D

But on a serious note, #17 should be retired, just for all he’s done for us as an organization.

The early bird catches the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

by Flowing Willow on Mar 5, 2010 1:34 AM EST up reply actions

I think #17 should be retired

but doubt the Panthers will do it…they have that bar set high. Neither Mintor or Rucker were considered.

I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com

by Jaxon on Mar 5, 2010 9:56 AM EST up reply actions

The bar should be set high for retiring numbers

The Yankees have a high bar and are still running out of numbers(you can scratch no. 2 off that list)

I agree he’s done a ton for your org., but not enough in my eyes to hang his number up forever. how about offering him a permanent position within the organization when he does hang it up, that would show enough gratitude.

Where do y’all think he’s going? now that i’m thinking about it, we’re losing david carr, i wouldn’t mind having jake to backup eli.

by wilddre22 on Mar 5, 2010 10:56 AM EST up reply actions

No way

I love what he did here, but you can’t set the bar that low. One probowl, one NFC Championship win… and nothing else other than running up stats for a team that has little history. Are we going to retire every player that does that?

I’d love to see him eventually come work locally as an announcer, commentator though… But not sure if he’s cut out for that kind of work.

Hey-Hey Hey GOOD-BYE

Sorry but I have stated it on here on many different occasions that I really never cared for Jake Delhomme. He was a poorman’s Brett Favre and I am so glad that he is gone. M. Moore is our QB now and we are going to draft one very, very soon. I seriously doubt that Feely or McCown are going to be retained either. I wouldn’t mind taking a shot at K. Clemens however but I doubt he wants to be a backup QB. I don’t want Pennington in here as our QB either.

Pay Jake the cash who cares I am just super excited to see us getting rid of older aging vet’s that are no longer performing at high levels. D-Lew bye, Jake INT KING Delhomme see (even though we have to pay your sorry behind) and KEMO you are next just as soon as you are healthy enough to be cut so we don’t violate NFL rules.

Now Jake go ahead and go back to New Orleans and backup D. Brees we will see ya next season as we crush your Saints.

by Holty_Panthers_Fan on Mar 4, 2010 10:28 PM EST reply actions

No Vick ~ QB competition welcomed however.

Not saying that Clemmens could not beat out moore but the Panthers are going to be players in free agency it looks like, way way more than any other franchise thought.

How about this QB depth chart:

1- M. Moore
2- Colt McCoy
3- H. Cantwell

The Panthers could take McCoy in the second round or we could just wait and take a T. Hiller type in the Sixth round.

I just hope we are not going to do something dumb such as trade for a “washed up” M. Vick; the problem with Vick is simple it is not a matter of how he is going to screw up and cause a problem the matter is when is it going to occur ?

No VICK TO CAROLINA Plz; I could care less that he likes our jerseys and the only reasons he wants to play here is so that he can stick it to the Falcons twice a year; he doesn’t give a damn about Carolina and we should not waste time on him.

by Holty_Panthers_Fan on Mar 4, 2010 10:34 PM EST up reply actions

Chad Pennington might be a little rich for our blood, but he’s a possibility.

Other cheaper notables are:
- Jon Kitna
- Charlie Batch
- Chris Redman
- Duante Culpepper (no thanks)
- Kyle Boller

He has the knowledge of Pennington (without the accuracy of course). He wouldn’t be bad to help young QBs along.

Though, if we could get Pennington cheap….

I thought it was unlikely, but I did state this would be a possibility when we were talking about the uncapped season.

The Panthers save a large portion of money over time by releasing him and this opens the books to where Matt Moore could be offered a large extension if he performs in 2010.

On one hand, Jake has sucked really bad the past year or so. However, he’s also by far the best QB we’ve ever had. #17 needs to be retired someday but for now, its Matt Moore’s time!

Oh, so Fasani, Lefors, Moore, Basanez, and Carr weren't trying to develop a backup/possible starter.

Despite all the crap you spout, Delhomme was in fact a good quarterback for us, and we did attempt to bring in backups. Delhomme was just the best of them until this past season.

Smitty lead this team to great success not Delhomme

Smitty lead this club, and he made Jake Delhomme look way better than he ever was; Steve Smith deserves all of Jake Delhomme’s credit, sorry but the truth needs to be stated here. Without Smitty in Carolina Jake Delhomme may have never become a starting QB in Carolina or at -least never gotten to stay as one anyway.

Tell me I am wrong that Smitty aloud Jake Delhomme to become a super bowl caliber QB and made Jake look way better than he ever was ? Correct ~

by Holty_Panthers_Fan on Mar 4, 2010 10:52 PM EST up reply actions

Didn’t Smith & Jake come to prominence around the same time? Then how can it be said that one led to the others success? They both lead to each others success, in my opinion. In the two years prior to Delhomme’s arrival, Smith had combined for just over 1,000 yards and 3 TD’s.. In Delhomme’s first year, Smith broke 1,100 and recorded 7 TD’s.

by D-Ranged1 on Mar 5, 2010 12:08 AM EST up reply actions

This

Who was the QB for Smith’s Triple Crown? What happened when Delhomme missed time? Those should answer any questions about Jake Delhomme’s competency.

Execution of Justice

I guess I just feel like it should be a somber and necessary thing and not a celebration. Like having to euthanize a pet. It had to be done, but as much as he drove me nuts I loved pulling for him.

And I mean this in the most respectful way, but Jake reminds me of a well loved but lame race horse who was once a winner. I hated watching him race and lose, but putting him down is even harder.

It had to be done – Jake was well loved, but it was his time.

But that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t suck, because it does suck – but it had to be done. Jake had to be released so Moore could have his shot.

Draft Gilyard!

by bwsmith25 on Mar 5, 2010 10:47 AM EST up reply actions

Its either Vick or a high draft choice

I hope we do not go for Vick. Chad Pennigton may be a strong possibility.

by Indian Panther on Mar 4, 2010 10:42 PM EST reply actions

Agreed ~ A. Byrant rumor really taking shape;

Another rumor really floating around that we are now in the market for A. Bryant so if we could land him then we could draft J. Snead or Colt McCoy with our 2nd round pick and WR would be less of a real need.

I would love to see A. Bryant lineup opposite Smitty; of course Byrant has character issues but so did Smitty for a while as well and Byrant always plays great at Bank of America Stadium.

by Holty_Panthers_Fan on Mar 4, 2010 10:50 PM EST up reply actions

Pennington

I like Pennington, but he lacks a deep ball. Doesn’t seem to fit in our offense.

by adamwanderer on Mar 4, 2010 10:51 PM EST up reply actions

Pennington as a backup ~ I am warming up to the Idea at this point.

Most report now has us signing a veteran backup and I figure with our money to spend I would look for Pennington to be the guy; I guess we could do worse for a backup QB depending on cost and no way I would give him more than a one year deal period.

Anything is better than Jake.

by Holty_Panthers_Fan on Mar 4, 2010 11:00 PM EST up reply actions

Pennington's not bad

But I don’t know if he has a strong enough arm to throw down field the way Fox likes to

by southtunnel on Mar 4, 2010 11:02 PM EST up reply actions

Consider Kitna also

Yeah, he sucked at QB in Detroit (who doesn’t), but he’d be a good mentor for Moore and, hopefully, a developmental draftee. Plus he’d be cheap.

Beside Pennington is probably re-signing with Miami.

by Scrantsj on Mar 5, 2010 10:31 AM EST up reply actions

Not sure Moore needs a mentor.

He’s 26, has started enough games against good opponents to know what to do and how to do it, and he had 2 1/2 years on the sidelines to observe.

Rookies need mentors. I think one reason Jake was cut is that Moore didn’t need a mentor around him.

by bigdavis on Mar 5, 2010 10:50 AM EST up reply actions

Not necessarily...

Kitna was behind Romo last year, and Romo had a much better year. (I know, no proof). But QB is probably on the Draft list this year. Might as well have some veteran help to mold him.

Really official now _ Money owed Jake

We are on the hook for $12.7 million for Jake next season; apparently we asked him to retire as a panther but he wasn’t hearing it since he is such as competitior have fun being a backup back in New Orleans Jake of course what do you care you are getting paid regardless.

Wanna know what's sad?

Not the fact that Jake has been cut (that’s the greatest news since drafting DeAngelo), but that this pathetic QB is the best that the Panthers have ever had. A career backup who got lucky for one season and who had arguably the greatest receiver in the league to throw to, but still managed to turn the ball over half a dozen times a game is the best QB in franchise history. It makes you want to vomit.

We've had two decent QB's

Beuerlein and Delhomme. Jake was good up until this past season. Was he Peyton Manning? No, but he wasn’t terrible by any stretch of the imagination. Last year was the exception, not the rule.
