if the season started today, we would be down. We don't have a potential third string quarterback or a bona fide backup quarterback. We don't have a guy we're considering for Moose's spot. There's a lot of areas we're missing.

I honestly have some problems with how you framed that quote
“Steve Smith, on his level of comfort with the team’s direction”
The quote itself says nothing about Smith’s opinion of the future of the team, nor does it say anything about the direction of the franchise in the future.
Maybe I’m the only one, but all I see this quote saying is that Smith believes that the current state of the team in March 2010 is not a team that would be successful if they were forced to take the field immediately with no changes.
September is six months off. Smitty may be uncomfortable with the makeup of the team now, but I don’t see this quote saying that he is uncomfortable or concerned about the state of the team.
Furthermore, you annotated and missed some key parts of the quote:
At the top of he quote:
"This second, today? We can anticipate all day, but if the season started today…
Then at the end:
“So now, we’re an unfinished product.”
This indicates that Smith himself indicates that the team is ‘unfinished’ meaning he understands there are moves that have yet to materialize.
I think the more telling and interesting quote from this article was Smitty’s opinions on Matt Moore:
“The way Matt played the last four games, he deserves all the accolades. He’s a young guy, yes he is. Everybody at some point was where Matt is, a young guy waiting for an opportunity — including myself. If Matt does what he’s worked on, he’ll be as good as he wants to be. But for me to say what kind of quarterback, he’ll be, that’s not my area.”

Have all the problems you want.
But the question asked was: “Are you comfortable with the team’s direction this offseason?” That’s how he chose to answer. And I found his parsing to be pretty irrelevant. He just didn’t want to bash the team completely, but the core of the statement shows how he really feels.

Only Smith knows how Smith 'really feels'
When it’s one block quote and you take out the first and last line it changes the tone of what he’s saying. Those first and last lines indicate an acknowledgement that it’s still early, and that there are opportunities for further changes that could answer Smith’s questions.
I believe you’re misrepresenting a quote, because parsing it as you did portrays Smith as a player unhappy, not one who acknowledges there’s work yet to be done. Obviously the article the quote was taken from didn’t think those first and last lines to be ‘pretty irrelevant’.
Smith was asked a pointed question, and didn’t truly answer it. However, the way you framed his quote made it appear that he gave a definite answer.
I believe it’s very important to provide quotes verbatim lest you misrepresent the tone.

MP, What does your law professor say about Yellow Journalism?
You are presenting a quote out of context. Thank goodness you are not a paid sports writer.
If God came down on Christmas Day
I know exactly what He'd say
He'd say "Oi!" to the punks
and "Oi!" to the skins
but "Oi!" to the world and everybody wins.

I'm presenting the quote as he said it.
You had every opportunity to read the rest of the interview.

No
You’re presenting some of the quote as he said it

I did not alter the quote in any way.

So leaving "So now, we're an unfinished product." off the end of it isn't altering?
How so? Please explain.
As long as the Panthers don't trade for Michael Vick or draft Tim Tebow, my sanity (what's left of it, at least) will remain intact for 2010.
When quoting a source it is prudent to use ellipses when it is important that the reader know the quote was truncated.
You don’t always need to use ellipses in this fashion, however, given that your omissions changed the tone of Smith’s original quote you should have put ellipses at both the beginning, and end.
So while you did not alter the quote, you did misrepresent it by truncating the quote without representing that you did so.

Then wouldn’t it be better to simply link the article as a fanshot and give a summation rather than post it as a quote fanshot?
If we’re going to cut out important information that just makes more sense. That way people can understand that said summation is a personal opinion rather than a misrepresentation of the source.

why bother arguing with a curmudgeon like MP
He knows how Smitty feels because MP is a mind reader. Give the conjurer of spirits his props for knowing what someone else is feeling. Smitty “knows” that the Panthers aren’t any good because they cannot replace Landon Johnson and Jake Delhomme. Can’t you guys read his thoughts? You need to learn this skill, it is very useful.
