Peppers Sheds More Light on Departure

I'm tired of talking about former Panthers DE Julius Peppers as much as anybody yet his latest interview continues to shed light on the reasons for his departure. We have been forced to speculate on his reasons for leaving Charlotte since he rarely talked to the media the last few seasons. Now that he has left he has found his pulpit for explaining all that went wrong in Charlotte, at least in his view. I want to be clear this is not another ‘Bash Peppers' piece, I'm simply trying to put this puzzle together so we can see the picture clearly and hopefully move on.

Let's start with the notion Peppers was tired of being a big fish in a little pond:

"I'm out here in Chicago and there's just a lot of love,'' Peppers yells over the blaring music. "I think back in Charlotte, I had been there so long that everybody got used to me. I mean, I got attention there and all that. But out here in Chicago, it feels a lot more genuine.''... he continues "Truth be told, that's really one of the small reasons that I wanted to get out; because everybody knows your business in Charlotte,'' he says. "I wanted to try something different because out here in Chicago, Jordan was here. Pippen was here. They've got Urlacher. They've got hockey. They've got the baseball. In Charlotte, it was all about the Panthers.''

So there is no doubting Peppers tired of being the big fish and wanted a bigger pond that already had it's trophies. I have to admit though this type of crap would get old with anybody:

"I live on a small town on the lake, and I mean people would get on their jet skis and just post up in front of my crib, trying to see who was there in my house.''

Star-divide

But is that reason to leave? He did say it was a small reason...We've speculated a lot about Peppers agent Carl Carey and his role in all this. He's not an experienced agent but I better understand why Peppers trusts him, which in his world is more important than being just an agent. It starts with an incident at UNC where Carey stood by Peppers after he was accused of plagiarism:

"That was the first issue that we confronted,'' Carey says, "and believe me, we've been through a lot together.''

Carey entered Peppers life full time after his 4 game suspension his rookie season after taking a substance from a still unnamed Panther team mate:

"It was just one of those learning experiences for me, one that told me you can't really take everybody for their word,'' Peppers says. "I felt like I could trust that teammate.

"That's why I don't have a lot of close friends. Outside of my mom and Coach Foster, it's just Carl and I.''

Peppers never mentions his father so I think Carey has definitely filled that hole in his life. That explains his lack of concern for Carey's agent experience; he simply wants someone he can trust. As it turns out Peppers sounds proud of Carey now for completing the deal with the Bears for $42M guaranteed:

"That deal is so good that Carl did,'' Peppers says. "He's not even a full-time agent. He's a professor at (Texas Southern). I'm happy for myself, and I'm happy for Carl for executing it because he was much-maligned throughout the process. Things couldn't have ended up any better.''

So it seems Peppers has returned the favor by sticking by his guy who stuck by him all these years; it's come full circle.

The last topic is Jon Beason's radio interview where he essentially questioned Peppers on-field intensity. Though I agree Beason was wrong for making those comments I think Peppers had long decided to leave Charlotte so in the grand scheme of things you can't blame Beason for Peppers leaving at all.

"Beason ... he knew he was wrong for that,'' Peppers says, his tone raised a notch. "I didn't even have to respond to that because as soon as he left the radio station, he came over and apologized.

"People that really know me know how I work. You never heard one of my coaches or (other) teammates say anything about my work ethic. And that Beason thing kind of got taken out of context.''

Just chalk that up to a learning experience for Beason that I'm sure he won't forget. No doubting this is Beason's team now.

One last Peppers quote on the use of stats to judge a players impact:

"A lot of people don't really understand that a statistic is an indicator, but it doesn't really give the full picture of the body of work,'' he says. "There's been time when I've had one sack or no sacks and controlled a whole game, and I've seen other cats get three or four sacks and it had no effect on that game.

"My approach is going to be all about winning games. All the rest of that stuff will take care of itself.''

I can't disagree with this analogy at all, as long as you win games. When you don't win and you don't produce the stats either I'm sure the Chicago fans are going to be asking the same questions those of us in Charlotte have been asking.

So in summary the fact Peppers was essentially worshiped in Charlotte really annoyed him more than anything. Conversely Peppers doesn't want the responsibility of being a team leader. I think these two items are the primary reason for his leaving rather than loyalty to his friend Carl Carey or anything the Panthers organization or team may have said or done. Right or wrong, good or bad, I think I at least finally understand all this. I know, I know time, time to move on.

He was a drain on our team. His salary last year handicapped us from a depth standpoint. He made plays( when he acctually hustled)when it it didnt matter. How many times in the last 3 years have we seen rookie/mediocre OTs stand him up one on one, nobody is afraid of him anymore(for good reason). Yes he had good stats last year, yea, but I think that a 37 y/o DT that came in mid season made more of difference on our D than he did. If our D is terrible next year, it wont be becasue we lost him(IMHO). If we suck next year please by all means come back and rub it in my face.

YAWN!

Charlotte is an"everyone knows everyone" kind of town. Chicago has a larger market, more seclusion (relative), and the chance to spread out with everyone up your crack if you mean something.

Mark my words…….

Once he pulls a “disappearing act” during a game, those fans will quickly call into question his heart. Erlacher made it because he played 24/7, and showed true heart.

Good luck Julius, don’t wish for things, you might get what you want. Case in point, my son just wanted to “sleep and relax” after playing baseball in Orlando for the rest of his Spring Break. He caught the flu and was in bed the whole time we were in the Florida Keys.

Beason "shouldn't" have said that

But that doesn’t mean it wasn’t how he really felt. If Beason apologized it, it was because he knew what he did wasn’t politically correct… but not because he didn’t mean it. Pep, a guy whose admitting he’s running from tiny, insignificant life problems, has no business criticizing Beason… a guy who embraces his problems… And therefore unlike Pep is loved because of it.

Now, with that being said, I still think you guys who believe we are instantly better just by replacing Pep with a couple of rookie hopefuls, are just talking out of emotion for your team. There’s no Football-Karma effect because Pep’s being a brat. But I sure hope you are right.

Having watched a lot of panthers football in 15 years

Granted, I’m still mourning the loss a little bit…He may not have shown up sometimes, but I’ll be damned if the other team wasn’t constantly thinking about Pep’s presence on the line! Anyways though, I don’t think it’s misguided optimism for us to think that brown and johnson can blossom in full time roles…Just looking at tape for both of them and seeing how much they utilized their time in games (especially johnson…he’s definitely starter ready as he’s ever going to be), I’m pretty excited for the D. Plus, with all these youngsters in and as good a defensive staff as we’ve had since Del rio left, I think our D will be just fine…Hopefully we can wrap up marshall though, because I think he’s moved past his sophmore slump and is ready to go full speed with Gamble on the other end!

Welcome to the blog Thomas

I think Marshall and the D as a whole will be more than adequate to keep the Panthers in any game this season. With a QB that protects the ball and a clock-chewing running game the Panthers will be contenders for a least a WC spot if they still cannot keep up with the Saints. Yet anything can happen once the playoffs start.

I bet we knock'em off both games this year.

We put 367 rushing yards on them in two games last year with Williams, Stewart, Sutton, and Goodson. Next year, we’re going for 400+.

Get lost Julius. Use your new money, buy a secluded place and just go away.

Jaxon, let’s treat Pep the way he treated us… he wouldn’t give interviews. Let’s stop writing about him.

Do more stuff on players who WANT to be in Carolina… like Brayton!

I see what you're saying scorpion12

But I relish every tiny iota I hear about Peppers and his opinions about the state and organization post-Pantherdum.

It fans the flames for when we see the Bears in the regular season!

Peppers

Who cares? He’s moved on, the Panthers have moved on. Time to give it a rest, Our Team is not in as bad a shape as some people would say. I wouldn’t be surprised if we won at least 10 games next year and rolled those Bears. The main thing is we have players here that want to be here.

LIES!!!!!

It’s real simple, he wanted more money, and all those other things hementioned are all lies and bull…. If we offered him the money he wanted, he would’ve stayed. If anyone of you would like to park in front of my house and stare into it to see who’s there, and i’m making $20 mil, i can handle it. it was all about the money, and anything he says to the contrary is a lie. seriously, if these things were the main issue, why did he first mention the difference in money a couple weeks ago, and not the stresses of living on lake front property and only making over $1 mil a game to help him cope with the stress and agony. he was a real asset for our defense, sometimes, but his lies and overall lack of integrity disgust me. the more he talks, the more i’m glad he’s gone. and his excuse for his rookie year suspension prvide more evidence to his inability to take responsibility. he used a product that had ephedrine. it was banned. he got caught. it’s that simple. but it’s becuase of a teammate…? really? i’m offended. he needs to shut his mouth. the more he talks, the more intelligent his agent seems.

WHAT!? Peppers isn't being accurate? LIES, SLANDER

I agree with you 100% usana. It just follows the long line of Peppers USDA grade A BS.

It was all about the money to him, why lie about it?

Yeah its puzzling

People would have thought he was LT had he done that...

He wanted to avoid confusion…

As long as the Panthers don't trade for Michael Vick or draft Tim Tebow, my sanity (what's left of it, at least) will remain intact for 2010.

Money Money Money

It is the same reason that J. Peppers left Carolina, it is the same reason the J. Richardson gave his great speech at the owners meeting today in FLA, and lastly it is the same reason that pro sports are way out of control.

J. Peppers go screw yourself you are not going to win anything with the Bears oh they have hockey in the same town as football whoaahh maybe you should have went up the highway to Raleigh and taken in a Hurricanes game a couple of seasons ago when we offered you a huge contract extentsion.

I am glad he is gone he is a maxed out overpaided veteran, just like everyone else getting high value deals on the free agent market this offseason.

People coming up to my house in jet skis, give me a break and most players would love to be in a town and in a state that supports their team and loves their players that much.

Peppers good bye you and you dumba#@! agent Mr Carey got what you both wanted a big contract that way over pays your sorry behind.

Go Mr. Richardson we are lucky to have such a great owner of our NFL team.

Hasn’t occurred to me yet with all this Peppers talk.. Chicago doesn’t have an offense.

Meh

I hope Peppers does well. This is just the nature and the business of professional sports.

Of course, I hope nothing good for the Bears in general, so I suppose the sentiment doesn’t extend particularly far.
