Mocking the draft- A Revshawn and Aussie odyssey

Good afternoon everyone. I thought I'd report in on how the Panthers' mock is looking for tomorrow over at 'Mocking the Draft'. Revshawn and I have taken up the duty of being the Panther pickers for the remainder of tomorrow's draft, so I thought I'd let the community know what has happened and what we're looking at for tomorrow.

When we came aboard the 2nd round pick had already been assigned to the Panthers by default- we picked WR Arrelious Benn out of Illinois. Despite this being a default pick I was thrilled; Benn is at the top of my board for the Panthers because he's a big body and easily the best blocking WR in the draft. He'll should help replace Moose and continue to support the running game where needed. While Rev and I both plan to be picking live tomorrow we'd like to let you in on our 'big board' for the 3rd and 4th rounds, and our current thinking for the remaining rounds- though we're still fleshing it out.

We always appreciate comments and discussion- but forgive us that we wont be changing the board in the 11th hour. I'm still running our community mock starting April 1st, but this should be a nice taste to wet the beaks of those desperate for a little mock draft info.

It's actually pretty funny.

We’ll have to keep an eye on a lot of the higher players James. I’ve already seen a lot of guys that are slipping through and no one really have spotted them. It’s very possible we might he grabbing 2nd round TE’s in the 7th round, and that’s no joke.

I know it. Some other players are going way too high for my liking.

hmmm....

Shouldn’t the Panthers have been picking in the 47th spot, not 48th?

by Scrantsj on Mar 19, 2010 5:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I like DE Carrington or WR Ford in the 3rd

Carrington can be groomed by Brayton as they are similar players.

Ford, unlike Benn, will provide that speed opposite Smitty which defenses will have to respect. Don’t get me wrong, I love the pick of Benn in the 2nd. I think I remember another big (6’2" 210+) Big Ten WR who had a pretty good career with us.

In the 4th I like a DE, OLB or WR

This is dependant on who is selected previously.

As an ECU alum, DE CJ Wilson is a good player. He is more of run stopping guy at the NFL level. However i think the 4th is too high for him.

I also like DT Linval Joseph as a solid run stopper, but again the 4th is too high.

If Carrington or Ford falls, then jump all over that. Same with OLB Dekota Watson.

Other players I like:
CB Akwasi Owusu-Ansah (he seems to be on the rise)
TE Jimmy Graham (loads of potential, but is this the type of TE we would use though with our coaching???)
OLB Navorro Bowman
CB Al Jefferson

I'll be honest, I didn't really like Arrelious as a pick.

He seems unproven to me. Sure, he had one 1K yard season, that much is true. But he had rediculously silly coverage during a lot of those deep balls that brought him to said 1K, and he hasn’t really proven that he can be consistently consistent. Moreover, there was a lot of talk in the combine about dropped passes and him paying too much attention to his footwork.

He’s growing on me though. Slowly, surely, he’s growing on me. I like a DE in the 3rd round myself, or another 325+ body at DT.

I think his showing at the combine was due to over correction.

One of the criticisms leveled against Benn was his route running, so I think he concentrated too much on it at the combine and overlooked his hands. I think people are unfairly calling him ‘Braylon 2.0’ and he’s a definite reach in the 1st round as some mocks have him going, but I think he’s a steal where we’re picking in the 2nd.

True true.

I’d just feel more comfortable if he was a senior and he had been more consistent in college. He had one terrific year, and he’s a kick returner. That’s it. And his last year in college he didn’t even break 500 yards, and he decides to come out as a junior? That’s very worrisome.

He has the physical talent, that much is true. He can block, he can make catches in open space. But in the NFL, he’s going to have guys right behind him, fighting for ever ball he catches. Can he maintain his composure when he has to start fighting for his stats?

He’ll probably be a success, but he isn’t falling on the draft board for nothing. I would have preferred a player like Taylor Price. He got better each year he was in college, had a better 40 time, good hands, and he looks pretty well to translate to the pros. I say we pick him, and send him to Steve Smith so that he can coach him up!

And bring back Moose too xD

"rediculously silly coverage during a lot of those deep balls that brought him to said 1K"

Such as? Which game? Which DB’s? I have not seen him play much, but from what I have read from most, not all, scouts is that the reason for his drop in production was more due to the fact that his team talent droppped off significantly. When he had Juice and Mendenhall he played very well. Just think what he could do with DeAngelo, Beef Stew, and Smitty!!

BTW – I’m not trying to be a jerk, I am sincere in my questions.

Will Parker

by WillParker81 on Mar 19, 2010 6:03 PM EDT up reply actions

It's alright. I gotcha man, no worries. I can't tell you the DB's, but I can tell you the games.

The ones I’ve seen were against Penn State and another at Michigan. Both of these catches were simply sad when you look at the defense. They didn’t have a guy within 15 steps of him, I’ve never seen someone so ridiculously wide open. Take away those two catches alone, and there goes a little over 100 of his yards. And that’s during his 2nd year.

I know I’m nitpicking a little bit, but I’m not saying he’s not worth his place in the draft. I’m just making the argument that I have a couple or few players that I would choose ahead of him. He’s got a few red flags that frighten me away. I really prefer a WR that has gone through 4 years of college, has been consistent all 4 years, and has proven a solid knowledge of the game, good footwork, good route running, ect. I list Taylor Price as a guy I’d pick over him, he’s a good example.

3rd round

DE Alex Carrington (Arkansas State) or OLB Dekota Watson (FSU)

4th round

If we do not get Alex in the 3rd round, we have to go for DE Lindsey Witton (UCONN) whose draft ratings are climbing.
Jacoby Ford should still be available for us in the 4th round.

Tell me about TE Dennis Pitta...

because per this if Houston is gone then you would take a TE? Is that the way I’m reading it? Never heard of him….but his Walter Football profile looks pretty good. Is he value at that spot since we don’t seem to need a TE. Just asking ;)

by Jaxon on Mar 19, 2010 5:09 PM EDT reply actions

Besides Jermaine Gresham....

Dennis Pitta has to be the top pass catching TE in the draft. He wasn’t really a good blocker in college, that needs to change obviously if he’s going to play in our offensive system. But if we’re going to try to grab another target for Matt Moore and we don’t believe in Daunte Rosario ((sad :( )) then Dennis is one of the ways we can go.

In my view though, this draft list isn’t really in any order of importance. For me, it’s pretty much just players we have an eye on. I’m pretty sure that James and I will get connected on a chat of some sort and we’ll be going back and forth figuring out who we want to pick, using our board as reference. Dennis Pitta has a good argument though, he almost broke 3,000 yards in college. That’s better than most receivers in the draft right now. I like him!

You sure about that Jaxon? You've got to be looking at the wrong draft.

The draft that James and I is going down tomorrow. You’ve got to be looking at the wrong one.

Scared me for a moment man. I almost had a heart attack. I created a chat room really quick and everything before I doublechecked. Haha.

This is totally crazy.

I’ll bet hardly anyone shows. The draft is one day early. It clearly says in the directions: “This Saturday.”

Ok. The only thing I can figure out....

Is that they autogenerated the picks due to the BPA lists, or that the guys running the draft had sent emails to get a head start on it. I don’t really recommend it, since it can cause a lot of panic and confusion.

The draft starts Saturday at 1PM, EST. That’s what the directions say anyway. If it’s any different, then it’s not my fault. Lol

I think Pitta is value at the spot

He benched more than any other of the top TE prospects in the draft.

Tight end is one of those weird positions for the Panthers in my opinion. Yes, we have Jeff King who can block, and we have Rosario who can catch and we have Barnidge who can do both but excels at neither.

I think Pitta is a better receiver than any of them, and could be a better blocker than King in time.

Ugh!

I like LaFell a LOT more than Benn. Benn is bigger and faster, but LaFell has been a playmaker in a big-time program for years (won LSU the national championship, remember), and he runs better routes. He’s also the best blocker in the draft, not Benn. He’s Moose v 2.0.

 My opinion, of course. :)

by Cyberjag on Mar 19, 2010 5:20 PM EDT reply actions

This

although I think Demaryius Thomas is the best blocking receiver in the draft. ;)

But yes, I like LaFell more, he has #1 upside, and he doesn’t drop the ball.

Jake Delhomme, QB Carolina Panthers, 2003-2009.

Rolle

I say snag the guy if he’s available in the 5th.

Without going overboard, the guy is a hero and an inspiration.

I also understand why people wouldn’t want him, but this is the kind of person this franchise needs to be associated with.

My only problem with Jacoby Ford

is getting the Clemson ‘Loser’ mentality out of him. So in that regard we should take GT’s Demaryous Thomas! Right Rev?

Haha! Say what you want, he still looks like a snail compared to the awesome speed of Jacoby Ford!

But Jaxon, that game was horrible to watch. I won’t even blame the Refs this time, that was just horrible basketball that we played yesterday. It’s not even regular basketball, we were trying to play street ball like we were at some fancy dunking contest. We literally did not know how to respond to a full court press, and we were outhustled. It was disgusting, pathetic crap. We might have come back and made it a game if Oliver would have called a time out and coached. Instead, he was too busy scratching his rear on the sidelines. I hope he gets fired.

Good luck to Georgia Tech in the 2nd round though! Tomorrow at 2:20 EST. Should be a good game! Go Jackets! I’m cheering for them from now on till we get a new coach. Lol!
