Shawn Andrews
Could we sign him? He could start at RG or if he's still injured he'd give us great depth. This thread is mainly for discussion and I have to have more words so. blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah

he wouldnt be a bad addition to the team
but i think the FO will decide against it because it might be costly. plus it goes against the fringes of freeagancy
I don't think it's a good idea
Could we sign him? Absolutely – we can sign any free agent we want to.
Should we sign him? No. And I’ll tell you why:
He’s had injury concerns for the past several seasons. He only had 2-3 years where he was really great, and the rest of his career has been filled with various injuries and he has missed significant time.
Here is a clip from an assessment of Andrews’ career from the Philadelphia Inquirer (emphasis mine):
In 2004, the Eagles moved up in the draft to select Andrews, a massive tackle out of Arkansas, with the 16th overall pick. He had ballooned to more than 400 pounds just before the draft but dropped much of the weight and won the starting right-guard spot during training camp. He suffered a broken right leg in the first game, however, and was lost for the season.
Andrews fought back, and by 2006, had become one of the best guards in the NFL. He still could not avoid injury. In a divisional playoff game vs. the New Orleans Saints that season, he suffered a neck injury in the second quarter. His replacement, Scott Young, was whistled for a costly false start in the loss.
Andrews reached the Pro Bowl for the second straight year in 2007, but that would be the peak of his Eagles career. When training camp began in 2008, Andrews was a no-show. He said it was because of depression. The Eagles welcomed him back … He played in the first two games of the 2008 season but injured his back against Dallas and was shut down for the year after surgery.
He returned for minicamp last April and was subsequently moved to right tackle, replacing Jon Runyan. Andrews told the New York Times that he was still on medication for depression, and that he was worried about his health.
He arrived for training camp seemingly in good spirits, but on the first day he tweaked his back. After a visit with a specialist in California, he returned briefly during preseason practices. …
Don’t get me wrong, I think a “2007 Shawn Andrews” would be a great fit for any team, but I just don’t see him returning to that form, otherwise the Eagles never would have released him in the first place.
As long as the Panthers don't trade for Michael Vick or draft Tim Tebow, my sanity (what's left of it, at least) will remain intact for 2010.

Ouch!
I was thinking for OL depth if we could get him cheap.:)
This sig is dedicated to those cut in the 2009 purge.

no seriously
his back is all jacked up. Or he was faking it so he didn’t have to play.
Do or do not. There is no try.
Absolutely 100% agree.
Although if you like hearing homemade Rap songs about Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps than Shawn is the man. This was made this summer while Shawn was sitting out training camp with the back injury. This makes D-Will’s version of “Pants on the Ground” look like Grammy material.
wow
That might be the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen a celeb do. I love when he was like " I was about to freestyle for y’all but…" yeah total fail on that attempt…he even got tongue tied saying michael phelps…and he has had it for 5 months…what a friggin moron
Richardson you better not screw this up for me!

He might be the the type of player Carolina has been known to target

Think and research before you post guys…Come on!
No harm in talking about any player BH...
its the off season, we’re scratching for interesting things to discuss anyway!
I agree Andrews is damaged goods at best, both physically and mentally. It’s nice to think he might actually return to form but I bet he is done in this league. Some team will him him a chance in camp this year but I bet he gets hurt again. A 2007 Andrews though would plug in nicely at RG but as I said…wishful thinking
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Jaxon make sure you check out the link added to my post..
Its got some interesting information that could support that Andrews might still have something left in the tank.
What part of that article supports your notion that we should sign him?
As long as the Panthers don't trade for Michael Vick or draft Tim Tebow, my sanity (what's left of it, at least) will remain intact for 2010.
His multi-year deal left him with little incentive/motivation to perform...
Maybe a change of scenery would allow him to recapture the magic that made him a pro-bowl caliber player….Pro-Bowl experience+ reasonable contract = adequate depth….veteran experience. Just keep his prozac prescrition filled, require him to pass a physical and give the guy an opportunity prove his ability…..You never know.
you have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about

He could be a camp body...
given the Panthers need a RG he should find our situation attractive. I’d bring him in only if the guaranteed money is low and contingent he makes the roster. Then the risk is low.

I think we should look at him
For cheap though, which is why I think a deal won’t end up getting done.
Jake Delhomme, QB Carolina Panthers, 2003-2009.
120 TDs+16000+ passing yards=Good
89 INT's+27 lost fumbles=Bad
Most comeback wins since 2003=Priceless
And you eat crayons and possibly paste as well
I agree with Jaxon..we are talking about low risk options. Why wouldn’t you take a gamble, if you do not have that much invested? Bring the guy in for camp, and make him earn a spot.
im an eagles fan in philly and andy reid loves o linemen and had a huge crush on andrews since college. he would not just flat out cut the guy if he could play. he cant play. the end. he iinvested years of paying him without andrews actually play do u honestly think he would just cut him with no compensation so he could go join another team? also he wouldnt just be a low risk camp body that would have to earn a spot if he can actually play he would take a physical and demand a big contract that is IF he could play. he was incredible but had back problems since his senior year in college and since ur argument is about his contract and incentives then i repeat you have no idea..

A guy with the injury history that Andrews has can't be low risk, regardless of the money
He’s been too hurt, too often. A defensive lineman can blink too hard at him and he will go on IR, it’s just not a good move.
As long as the Panthers don't trade for Michael Vick or draft Tim Tebow, my sanity (what's left of it, at least) will remain intact for 2010.
Yeah he doesn't fit the mold very well
Fox wants his O-lineman to be “fall on the sword” type of guys. Andrews is more of eat the sword type of guy. Toughness, or lack thereof, is the reason he will never be a Panther, and perhaps will be blacklisted moving forward.
Do or do not. There is no try.
Fall on the sword or eat it
it still ends up in the same place.

bad analogy
If its even an analogy…but it is the action one takes before the sword ends up in said places…Foxy’s guys are selfless, team guys, Andrews is not a good teammate, judging by his time in Philly. The team questioned his integrity, his toughness, his heart and desire, and even his honesty. If any of these things come into question in life, then well, your doing it wrong.
Do or do not. There is no try.
Basically I'm saying he was a pro bowl RG
we have a slight hole at RG. If he’s willing to come for cheap, then we can see if he survives camp. He’s huge, that’s what I meant by eat the sword, if he can still play he would be a great asset in the run game. IF he can still play, but I think he deserves a camp invite to find out.

I personally have no problem with it
I actually would like to see if he could beat out Robinson and Bernadaeu in camp, because the more competition the better. But I don’t think he will be signed due to some of the concerns stated above.
Do or do not. There is no try.
