Who do the Panthers bring in to Backup Matt Moore?

After Jake Delhomme was suprisingly relesaed early in the Free Agency period, the Matt Moore era officially began.  Most Panther fans feel good about the way the season ended, aside from missing the playoffs, and are excited to see what Moore can do as a full-time starter.

With Moore entrenched as the new starter, don't look for the Panthers to bring in a veteran quarterback with the intention of there being an open competition in training camp.  Unless a trade is pulled, it appears unlikely that a player of this caliber will even be available this offseason.

So this brings us to the number two and three quarterback spots.  It would be a surprise if the Panthers used a draft pick on a traditional quarterback, and an even bigger surprise if they were to use an early draft pick.  You may have noticed "traditional" in there to describe a potential quarterback.  The Panthers have shown interest in former App State quarterback Armanti Edwards, so much so that a private workout was scheduled after Panther scouts watched him work out during his pro-day.  It would not be shocking to see the Panthers use a late-round pick on Armanti, considering he offers more than just being a backup quarterback.

Look for a young free-agent quarterback to be brought in to compete with Hunter Cantwell for the backup spot.  While this may be risky considering the possibility of Moore being injured, it would certainly follow suit with what the Panthers have been doing personnel wise so far the offseason--and that is, to not go out and spend money on a veteran with actual game-time experience.

With that said, I'm not sure management is scared of rattling Matt Moore by bringing in a guy that might be viewed as 'compitition,' but it looks to be more about dollars and cents.

If the backup (or 3rd QB depending on Cantwell's play) is a young, inexperienced guy that is brought in to learn behind Moore, does anyone have any ideas (aside from Edwards) as to who this might be?  In other words, from potential undrafted-rookie free agents, and the younger than 26 free agent crowd, who do you think the Panthers are keeping an eye on?

Its not all about cutting veterans

Its about cutting overpaid veterans with youthful options behind them that have potential. I think we’ll bring in a veteran #2 then have one of Cantwell/Edwards as our 3rd QB. A few vets I like for the #2 spot are Charlie Batch, Todd Collins, and our front office seems like like Josh McCown. I’d be fine with any of them as our #2.

I think we could see McCown come back

I’m a fan of Edwards in the sixth.

McCown wasn't cut - they just put a tender on him.

With all the QB’s in the draft, it’s likely to me that he doesn’t get picked up by another team (thereby awarding us a 3rd rounder, I believe), and thereby remains as our #2, with Cantwell as #3.

They tendered him? I missed that...

A 3rd rounder? I would have thought McCown would sign that by now

The list I just saw McCown is a UFA

Here

Not an official site though. Lemme look around some more

I'm pretty sure McCown has six year of experience

and therefore is a UFA.

Do or do not. There is no try.

I am sooo wrong.

Don’t know where my mind was – maybe up my a$$ with my memory. Just ignore what I said.

McCown

He has nice Accuracy and can zip a ball in a tight window

I also like Tony Pike in the third round

I just made a fanshot about it

But Armanti Edwards just ran a 4.43 in the 40 at his pro-day. That is faster than almost all wide receivers not named Jacoby Ford.

But since the article asked for names outside of Edwards, and I certainly don’t need to reassert my fanaticism, I’ll throw a couple free agents out there.

Josh McCown could be back in the mix.
Chris Simms was released by Denver after they signed Brady Quinn, but im just not sure about him anymore. It may be that he never really got his shot after that scary pancreas injury in Tampa.
Kellen Clemens is an attractive option. I am not sure what his RFA tender is though.

As you can see, the list is getting short if that is the best I can come up with.

Panthers might be waiting....

Look for Trent Edwards to possibly get cut later this year. Panthers should be all over that signing.

I think we should look towards Brooks Bollinger as a back-up..

I think he’d be just as serviceable as any other FA QB right now, and bottom of the barrel cheap. Reports say he made 60k last year before incentives as QB of the Florida Tuskers (UFL). Obviously not an NFL starter but a capable back-up IMO.

he is probably the type of guy we bring in…really cheap.

Love this excerpt from Panthers.com

It compares the Undrafted Matt Moore, and his performance to date in the NFL, to the 10 QBs who WERE drafted in 2007.

It's amazing isn't it...

That a guy like Matt Moore (undrafted) is better than the #1 overall pick in the 2007 draft – and he gets the opportunity to be the franchise quarterback for an excellent organization. Sometimes going undrafted isn’t such a bad thing after all…

As long as the Panthers don't trade for Michael Vick or draft Tim Tebow, my sanity (what's left of it, at least) will remain intact for 2010.

HAHA

This makes the term ‘draft experts’ even less credible. Man some franchises would be better suited blind-folding themselves and throwing darts at guys’ pictures.

Do or do not. There is no try.

Wow

What a crappy year for quarterbacks.

Granted, these guys still have plenty of time to carve out respectable NFL careers. I think Quinn, Kolb, Moore, Thigpen, and maybe Troy Smith will go on to have decent NFL careers.

The jury is out on Beck, Stanton, Rowe, and Palmer… haven’t seen much of them.

Russell and Edwards have pretty much proven themselves to be failures.

by Tater596 on Mar 18, 2010 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Edwards could still be a decent QB.

If his O-line could block competently.

Someone like this would be fine by me.

We know he can throw short accurate passes, so the gameplan would need to be trimmed back if he were needed, but other than that, and taking the snap from center, he would be a fine #3.

Do or do not. There is no try.

Undrafted

244 of 373 65.4% 4825 yards, 67 TD’s and he’s playing in Canada. Unbelieveable.
