Armanti Edwards posts a 4.43 in the 40 on his pro day, shows off arm strength
Armanti's draft stock continues to climb after his pro day workout, which was attended by 10 NFL teams, including the Carolina Panthers. He worked out at QB, WR, and KR/PR for the teams in attendance.
"Edwards said Jacksonville wants him to return kicks, while Carolina, New England, Indianapolis and Miami want him to work out at quarterback and receiver"
"While Edwards’ durability and size remain the big issues, few question his left arm. There were guys here this morning that did not realize how strong his arm is," Coach Moore said of Tuesday’s workout, which was closed to reporters. "They sat right here and watched him throw from this hash, throw comebacks over on the far sideline. That ball travels 45 yards."

5' 11" QB
Has wildcat package written all over him. Have serious doubts of him being a viable NFL prospect at QB.
Nah...
5’10 7/8" QB has WR and KR written all over him.

He also dropped down closer to 180 pounds than the 187 he was at in Indy.

We will see
Drive can overcome physical limitations sometimes, and Armanti isn’t totally lacking in physical tools. He has a strong arm, according to the scouts, he is accurate, and VERY mobile. He’d be good with the Seahawks, a la Seneca Wallace. He’s a good fit for a West Coast scheme.
Jake Delhomme, QB Carolina Panthers, 2003-2009.
120 TDs+16000+ passing yards=Good
89 INT's+27 lost fumbles=Bad
Most comeback wins since 2003=Priceless
He really throws well on the run
His best opportunity at QB would be in packages that get him rolling out of the pocket where he is a threat to run as well as pass.
This of course fits a wildcat package perfectly.
You don’t really need that ideal size to be this kind of QB, you just have to be able to take the hits that result.
You have to be able to see your receivers.

If you are rolling outside the pocket, is what I was getting at
He has made a living off of throwing on the run. They ran a lot of bootlegs and other packages at App designed to get Armanti in space, where he was a threat to either take off and run, or make a throw.
I anticipate that if they were to use him as a wildcat QB, the idea would be the same.
Also, he is just one inch shorter than Drew Brees… and that guy is pretty good. Also the scouts are touting his nice high release, effectively making him taller than he actually is.
He's almost an inch and a half shorter than Brees.
Edwards is 5’10 & 7/8". Brees is 6’0 & 1/4." And he’s tiny in his frame. Not even close as a comparison.

If Wallace is "good..."
Check out his career numbers. They’re stunningly similar (aside from the W-L record), even after Delhomme’s nightmare ’09.

The NFL is too size obsessed
Edwards is only an inch and an eighth away from Drew Brees’ height.
No doubt it’s going to be tougher for him, but most scouting reports say that his arm was impressive and he improved his stock. I definitely don’t think he’ll go as high as the 4th as some have predicted, but I think he’s a late round steal.

Indeed.
People should also keep in mind, this is the same guy who out-dueled Joe Flacco in his (Flacco’s) senior season in the I-AA National Championship game.
It is hard to make a comparison like that, but if we are talking “level of competition” it does not matter as much that App had the better defense and running game in that contest.
No matter where he lands, I am anxious to watch him perform at the NFL level, and silence the naysayers. I would love to see him do very well, and really silence the “size obsessed” NFL scouts.
He was also "outdueled" by Andrew Selle three months ago.
Who’s that? I have no idea either, but he certainly led Montana to the W against Armanti and the dominant Apps.

That game came down to the wire.
With one of the App receivers dropping a TD pass as the final second ticked off the clock. The ball was right in his chest… but he couldn’t hold on. The conditions in Montana were single digit temperatures and heavy snow. Do you really want to make that game your comparison for Armanti’s skill? The game where he bested Flacco was played in ideal conditions, and was never close.
Maybe you should try using a game for a comparison that you actually watched.
I did, thanks.
Individual matchups mean something in tennis and golf. Football is a team sport. Jake outplayed Brady in that Super Bowl, but that didn’t help us out.

So then why even bring up the individual comparison?
Why compare Armanti Edwards and Andrew Selle in a game in horrible playing conditions, if you don’t care about it?
I made the comparison to Flacco because App won in a dominant victory against his team. He did the same thing against Chad Henne and the Michigan Wolverines earlier that year… and in THAT case, there isn’t much argument for App having superior talent.
They had a strong leader and the will to win. That leader was Armanti. I believe there is something to be said for a guy who is “just a winner”
I didn't.
You did. And I brought it up because it made my point, that head-to-head matchups don’t decide games. Being “just a winner” at the I-AA level is like being the smartest kid in the special needs class.

It's worked out pretty well for Jay Cutler, too.
Or maybe his six wins a year at Vandy were more impressive than I think.

Try almost an inch and a half.
Brees measured at 6’0 & 1/4" before the draft.

It's certainly not going to help him, if that's what you mean?
There’s a reason there aren’t many QBs running around who aren’t even 5’11".

Size won't help him, just like it didn't help Drew Brees.
Brees had to earn his spot, and even had to tolerate being traded in favor of Phillip Rivers, but he got his chance in NO, and has really run with it.
The point is that they are of similar build, and Brees is pretty good at what he does. If he proves he can play, he will play, regardless of his height.
To suggest that is to suggest that his height doesn't matter.
That’s simply not true. If it didn’t, the NFL would be filled with 5’8" QBs.

To suggest that a player won't be considered because of his height
Is also simply not true. They may be less likely, but examples exist of smaller playerss that CAN play the game at the professional level. If you are a good player, you can overcome a size disadvantage. A la the Drew Brees, Steve Smiths, and Darren Sproles of the world.
Just like there are examples of players from I-AA that CAN play at the NFL level. We have been over this before. Just because you refuse to acknowledge it, doesn’t mean it isn’t true.
Who said he wouldn't be considered?
I simply said he won’t succeed.

I really hope he proves you wrong.
Drew Brees succeeded.
Steve Smith succeeded.
Darren Sproles succeeded.
Chris Johnson was considered “to small” too last I checked, he’s doing well right?
Saying that he definitively won’t succeed is completely against the facts given. For someone who likes to base their arguments on fact, you certainly are taking a big leap of faith saying he won’t succeed, given that others with less than ideal size HAVE succeeded.
In other words, saying he definitely will not succeed is a total shot in the dark. There is at least a possibility that he WILL succeed.
But I guess acknowledging that fact for you wouldn’t be convenient, because you like to compare I-AA football players to kids in special education.
I think it was 3/4's of an inch.

that's what she said
As long as the Panthers don't trade for Michael Vick or draft Tim Tebow, my sanity (what's left of it, at least) will remain intact for 2010.
I suppose the question could be
Would he make a good backup? If we drafted him he wouldn’t be starting this year.
Also, if we did use him as a KR/PR that would actually free up another roster spot for another player. Reversing trend from having a specialist at certain positions that we’ve done the last few years.
One would imagine they wouldn't have a player on the depth chart in both positions.
You don’t convert from a spread to NFL QB while also relearning life as a returner for the first time in four years.
