As long as the Panthers don't trade for Michael Vick, sign Derek Anderson, or draft Tim Tebow; my sanity (what's left of it, at least) will remain intact for 2010.

What's your reasoning for such a poor record?

Is is because of all the “quality” veterans they just cut?

by jdough on Mar 16, 2010 5:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Because I think we're not as good as the teams I have us losing to.

The Falcons and Saints both finished ahead of us last year, and we’ve gotten worse while Atlanta’s gotten better and the Saints are about as good.

Baltimore, Cincy, and Pittsburgh have strong defenses and competent offenses.

The Giants are tough at home, particularly when they haven’t sold their season down the river.

Just noticed I forgot the loss to the Bears. They’ve got an explosive QB in Cutler, a good back in Forte (when healthy), and I think they’ll improve their line after they underperformed last year. Add that to what will be a strong defense with Peppers and a healthy Urlacher, and I think they’ll be tough to beat.

I say Delhomme comes out inspired and beats us with the new-look, Holmgren-engineered Browns behind him.

Seattle’s a very difficult team to beat at home, although this is probably the loss I think we have the best chance to win.

Even in a best-case scenario, I think we win seven or eight games, with added wins over Seattle, Cleveland, and one more division win to go with the TB sweep.

Doom and gloom??

I suppose that you assume that cutting those players was the reason the front office has “sold the season down the river”. Delhomme…18 INT’s…gonna be tough to replace that. Nail Diggs…27 tackles….he’s a game changer with that output. Landon Johnson? Maake…he didn’t even play last year…his production will be sorely missed? Hoover, Lewis, and Peppers produced. Peppers wanted out, Lewis might still get resigned, and Hoover is a great player but he’s a full back…he can be replaced.

As far as leadership…Beason is the leader on defense, so there is no problem there. Delhomme was awful…so he couldn’t be the leader. Maybe Smitty? Khalil? DWills? Stewart? Gross? Need I go on? Heck maybe even Matt Moore will lead this team?
I know the change seems radical, but truth be known—Diggs, Johnson and Delhomme shouldn’ve been let go last year.

You must also be assuming that our new QB Moore will suck, which he won’t. If you feel that you haven’t seen enough out of him yet, let me put it in perspective. Once Favre “officially” retired from the Packers, they went with Aaron Rodgers and didn’t look back. They had one real game time experience to base their decision on….2007 against the Cowboys…he was excellent in that game. My point is that we’ve gotten to see way more game time experience from Moore. For those that say the games he played in were meaningless, the Patriots, Vikings, and Giants games were not meaningless to those teams, and Moore was outstanding.
Keep this in mind as well…with Moore at QB the Panthers offense concentrated more on the run…which they should’ve done the entire season. Where would we have finished then. All the INT’s from Delhomme kept the Defense on the field way too long.
There is much to look forward to.

Thanks

jdough, you just saved me alot of typing, had I not read this I would have had to respond to the above stupidity, Thanks dude.

by Sniff on Mar 16, 2010 11:26 PM EDT up reply actions

What are you talking about?

Diggs had 39 tackles, and neither Anderson nor Connor was ever able to beat him out. That says something about their ability. Johnson was ahead of Anderson and Connor on the depth chart as well. And we’re just going to assume they’re suddenly magically better? Lewis is already planning on signing elsewhere because the team has not so much as mentioned resigning him. Not coming back. A fullback is replaceable? Ask LaDanian Tomlinson if he thinks Lorenzo Neal was ever replaced. He went from an All Pro with Neal lead blocking for him to producing backup-quality numbers. Not a coincidence.

And yeah, I think Moore will be mediocre at best given that he’ll actually have to play games that matter against teams with as much of their season on the line as the Panthers do. Making a comparison to Aaron Rodgers is ridiculous. Rodgers was a first-round pick with a fantastic career in college in a pro-style offense. Moore was undrafted, had to transfer because he couldn’t beat out a scrubby QB at UCLA, and then was mediocre in a non-pro style offense.

And do tell, if the Panthers’ offense “concentrated more on the run” down the stretch, how in the hell was that Moore’s doing?

The defense wasn’t on the field too long when Delhomme was starting. They just weren’t very good until the second half of the season.

No

but the doom and gloom is unwarranted. First of all, there is still a lot to be done in the draft and free agency, we won’t have a good idea of these teams true potential until May or June. Secondly you completely disregard the talent we have available. Double Trouble, Steve Smith, a top five O-line, two of the best LB’s in the league, and a killer secondary. You also disregard internal improvement, you assume the guys we cut are automatically better than those we have on the roster. Every player has to start somewhere, who’s to say we don’t have stars in the making on our team? Charles Johnson, Everette Brown, James Anderson, Dan Connor, Matt Moore, Dwayne Jarret, Mack Bernadeau, L2, and Tank Tyler have all shown promise in the limited time they have received. Based on what you are saying, all of them would turn into busts.

Jake Delhomme, QB Carolina Panthers, 2003-2009.

Well you've convinced me MP

If the Clowns sign Diggs and maybe even Lewis….I’m jumping on their Superbowl bandwagon. Jake Delhomme will be the MVP of the league next year. But if they get Hoover as well….16-0!!!! Yeah Baby!

by jdough on Mar 17, 2010 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I'll bet you jumped on the Colon Cowhoard bandwagon last year

Cowherd ripped on Tony Romo about how he was just an “average” QB during the offseason last year. He said that he wasn’t even drafted and that he went to a no name school…therefore he wasn’t any good. Shows he knows as much as you do about evaluating talent.

I’ll bet you were saying that DWills was a flop when the Panthers drafted Stewart during the 08’ offseason…I bet you never saw that coming did you….?

You must’ve missed the fact that the 5 games Hoover missed…DWills ran with a 5.8, 5.6, 7.1, 4.8, 9.4 yards per carry avg. So much for that FB theory.

In response to the obvious answer to your question up there. That wasn’t Moore’s doing MP, that was the offensive coordinator playing the calls like he should’ve the entire season…the point was that since Moore was inexperienced they ran the ball more. Which was our teams strength to begin with.

You should change your tagline from “I’m just aiming to educate the masses. My law professor says they’re asses” to “Please educate me, I’m one of the masses that my law professor says are asses.”

What about the giants game?

their season was on the line and he was very good,15/20 for 170 yards and 3 TDs, he and J-Stew ruined the going away party for Giants Stadium. And I agree, I don’t think this will be a good season for the Panthers, too many holes and too little draft picks to remedy them, I don’t think this team has the quality to win 10 games, hope I’m wrong but that’s my opinion.

by jojoisthemann on Mar 18, 2010 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions

what holes

i don’t see any holes in our team. we’re not starting all-pros at every position, but what holes? the OL is intact, the best QB from last season will start the season. he played well last year, but he never started the season as a #1 with all of training camp to prepare. our RBs are still the best, we have 3 quality TEs, and our secondary is the same. our LBs will be better (just by virtue of TD playing the whole season). so many people have complained over the last few years that Diggs is mediocre at best, and now he’s gone. The only position where we may have gotten worse is DE, but there are no DEs worth 20 mil, so that was good business. I think our team will be better next year as we’ll have maybe 10 or so fewer turnovers from the QB position. i doubt we have as many injuries, and everyone on defense has had a whole year to learn Meeks’ system.

by usana_gaines on Mar 19, 2010 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Great summary of our hole-less team!

Another WR or 2, a D-lineman, and a return threat (all from the draft), and we’re in good position to surprise the experts.

I agree with ERL

I completely agree with ERL; expect I believe we are going to take out the Giants and the Saints once and lose to the Steelers in the season finale and hopefully we can give the Ravens a game as well. Plus we are playing the terrible NFC West which we should sweep but we had trouble against the NFC East last year so who knows.

Without draft picks in hand it is really hard to judge this team as it stands now.

I can already see it if we get C. McCoy or a bigger time receiever and every person that says we are going to finisht something crazy like 4-12 or 5-11 will have a change of tune. We are still better than the Falcons and Bucs today and after the draft. Falcons added big money D. Robinson and that is all he has ever cared about a’la J. Peppers. SO I cannot say that they are the team to beat and the Bucs are still rebuilding. Saints are going to have the toughest schedule in the league.

Plus remember Panthers always so up for big games and beat teams that we shouldn’t and games that we should win easily we usually have to come back to get a victory.

I will wait until after Pre-season to make my official call about the upcoming season.

Go Panthers.

We have a good shot at beating Pittsburgh anyway, but maybe we’ll get them the week that Rapelipsberger gets indicted and we Tee Off on Charlie Batch or Byron Leftout Leftwich, whom they will probably resign now, just in case.

4-12

Yeah… I know that I’m being pessimistic, but I don’t think that the defense will be able to stop the run, especially early in the season. So a key factor for the season record will be how tough the early games are. I’m afraid that the elimination of the older veterans and Fox in a Lame Duck position will make it harder (maybe impossible) to maintain focus if the team season starts out badly. I also think that there are too many people that will be UFA’s (including Fox) come 2011. Ther’s a strong danger that they will focus on their next6 contract ahead of team goals. That’s not a recipe for success.

We didn't exactly cut all of our superstars

We cut some vets to make room for the young guys, how does that say our staff has no desire to win?

My prediction is 8-8 at the worst. The worst being injuries like last season. I’m hopeful for a 13-3 record, but I think we’ll be around 11-5 to 12-4. We’re under the radar, and Fox does a good job of preparing us as underdogs. We are also young and hungry, we have something to prove. Just like in 2003, who saw us coming back then?

9-7

I see anywhere from 7-9 to 11-5, 4 games could be a coin flip. so 9-7.

W vs. ATL
L@ATL -We always seem to split

W vs. TB
W@TB – Still not a good team

W vs. NO
L@NO -We always seem to split

W vs. ARI – Lost a lot of talent

L vs. SF* – see below

W vs. CHI* – see below

L vs. BAL – This is going to be a good team

L vs. CIN – If they can stay out of jail, could be a playoff team

W@SEA* – see below

W@STL – With the first pick of the 2011 draft…

L@NYG* – see below

W@CLE – Making progress and will be young after their 12 draft picks, but still not a good team

L@PIT – always tough at home.

*Could go either way – Injury dependent (on both teams)
Reasoning:
SF is poised for a breakout year, they have most of the pieces in place. With the extra first from us, they could be dangerous (will probably win the NFC West)
CHI – Added some players, but still have a lot of pieces missing. It all depends health of their Def and whether they find any receivers
SEA is a mediocre team that is always tough at home, especially if Hasselback is healthy
NYG – Which Giants team will show up?

by Scrantsj on Mar 17, 2010 1:57 PM EDT reply actions

the season...i copied scrantsj format

W vs. ATL
L@ATL -I think we’re a more talented team, and we’ll win one…they’ll be our toughest challenge for the division title.

W vs. TB
W@TB – Still not a good team

W vs. NO
W@NO -I felt we were a better team last year, but gave away the first game because Jake couldn’t lead us to any points in the second half.

W vs. ARI – Lost a lot of talent…losing boldin, rolle, and dansby is dumb. couldn’t help warner retiring. we would’ve been better off signing boldin, though.

W vs. SF – they’re going to be a lot better and challenge for the division title, but they’re not on our level.

W vs. CHI – i could never predict us losing to them because i have flashbacks of smitty catching 26 passes against them in 2 games in the 2005 season.

L vs. BAL – This is going to be a good team

W vs. CIN – CIN is overrated, and Palmer is past his prime.

W@SEA – they suck, hasselbeck is the west coast version of delhomme

W@STL – they suck, too, and we’ll get another win here.

W@NYG – they have all kinds of problems. Osi will either be a starter or become the example of a prima donna DE. Jacobs played poorly last year and eli is overrated. the last time they beat us, derrick ward ran all over us, and he’s gone now.

W@CLE – They still suck because they’re coach has character issues. cribbs is still the best player on the team. they should’ve kept quinn, or draft the best qb available. if they draft a bradford, clausen or mccoy, then one of those guys will be named the starter before the season’s over.

W@PIT – they’re all confused. if palumalu is hurt, it’s an easy win. if not, well, you never know. they would’ve won the division if he played all 16 games in 2009.

So I have us at 14-2. Honestly, I think I’ll be wrong once or twice, but we’ll at least be 12-4. With all of our injuries last year, we still finished 8-8 with one of the toughest schedules. Now our schedule is easier, the team is better, everyone (obviously, at this point) is healthy, and we’re motivated to prove last season was a fluke, and that we don’t need the guys who left. I don’t understand people saying Fox is a lame duck coach. He’s in the last year of his contract, but if we’re over .500 by the mid-season, he’ll get an extension.

by usana_gaines on Mar 17, 2010 2:30 PM EDT reply actions

Good points that needed to be observed.

Rather than picking individual game winners, it makes sense to start with last year’s record of 8-8, which you did — and we should keep in mind that, before last season began, we were only expected to win 8 by the bookies, This despite the second toughest schedule in the league, Jake’s horrible performance, injuries galore (and that makes or breaks any team’s season — playoff teams are usually the ones who avoid key injuries), and a one-dimensional, supposedly easily defensed offense.

Now we get a far easier schedule, healed injuries, and a turnover-prone QB cut in favor of a new guy who’s shown he can lead our offense with positive TD production and low turnovers. And young, hungry players give a lot better effort than overpaid vets who’ve already finished their auditioning for the big contracts.

How can we NOT do better than the 8-8 we earned in ’09?

by bigdavis on Mar 17, 2010 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Assuming we stay healthy in key areas...

We should improve. I still think (without accounting for the draft and FA) that we will go 11-5.

If we draft well and sign a few more key players we could go 12-4 or even 13-3, but I think 11-5 is a safe bet at this point.

As long as the Panthers don't trade for Michael Vick, sign Derek Anderson, or draft Tim Tebow; my sanity (what's left of it, at least) will remain intact for 2010.
