Crazy Panthers Draft Scenario?
With the offseason of cuts that we've had, would you be surprised to have a wild and wacky draft? Well, just for fun let's take a look at some crazy scenario's to hold us over until the draft.
First, DeAngelo Williams goes to the Patriots for a 1st this year and 3rd in 2011. Belicheck finally gets tired of not having a feature back. Second, since the Panthers decided to dangle Richard Marshall with a second round tender, the Steelers take advantage and the Panthers receive the Steelers second rounder. Pretty wild stuff. And just for fun, the Panthers pickup Laurence Maroney as soon as the Patriots cut him after acquiring Williams.
Now the question becomes....who do we draft?? I look forward to hearing many of the ideas. Here's just one scenario...
1st Round...#22 Jared Odrick-Penn State-DT
2nd Round...#48 Devin McCourty-Rutgers-CB
#53 Corey Wootton-Northwestern-DE
3rd Round...#78 Dakoda Watson-Florida State-OLB
4th Round...#109 Andre Roberts-WR-Citadel
6th Round...Armanti Edward-Appalachian St.-QB/WR
Walter Thurmond-Oregon-CB
The second 6th rounder is assuming the Panthers are awarded a compensatory pick for losing Frank Omilaye or Geoff Hangartner from FA last season. Many will argue that a third wideout should be taken with one of those 2nd rounders, but I would argue that the defense will take precedence here in this draft. Charles Godfry will become our starter at corner to replace Marshall and Sherrod Martin will start at FS.
I'm a huge fan of DWills and Marshall, and I would hate to see them go. This is my first fan post here, so let me have it fellas!

No thanks
I like getting those two d-lineman, but not at the expense of D’Lo.
Do or do not. There is no try.
agreed
those are two players I love right there

McCourty won't last that long
He’ll probably be gone late first/early second
I'm going to go ahead and plead here...
Please don’t restart the double trouble break up discussion again. It has been beaten to death.
If it gets beaten any more, we will have to implicate Chris Brown as being involved in the matter.
LOL!
I agree, as long as someone doesn’t seriously advocate this I’ll keep my horse beating stick put away. ;)

I've seen conflicting reports on Odrick
Is he really 1st round talent?
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
Oh...with 3 picks in the first two rounds
got to get one of the good WR’s…

I'd say no to the trade..
But to humor the idea..
I’d rather take a WR @ #48, Akwasi @ #53, and Norwood @ #78 (who we could look at playing DE as well).
Thanks for at least playing along here D-Ranged1
A few people on this board shouldn’t bother commenting if their only purpose is to be rude to others. Funny how bold people are when they hide behind their computers. Yes Sniff, I’m talking about you. I can handle Akwasi and Norwood at those picks.
No...
Belichick definitely would not give up a 1st and 3rd for a RB with just one year on his contract. They’ve traded away numerous players (Vrabel, Seymour) to get those picks in order to get younger. I doubt they’ll just dump 2 picks on a RB that could be gone after just one year.

I'd guess they might give up a 1st, but not 1st and 3rd..
Pats don’t seem to like those 1st round picks.. Seems they stock up on those 2nd rounders.
All of the draft value is in the 2nd round.
Most of the time, it’s 1st round talent at discount prices
Belichick has a horrible track record drafting running backs.
Look up his draft history with running backs, not exactly impressive. It could be something that is tempting to him.
Pass on Williams trade however a second rounder for Marshall I would take in a second
I wouldn’t trade D. Williams for two 1st round picks the fact of the matter is that you could draft ten first round picks and not get a D. Will in your backfield once. Panthers made a great pick and have set themselves up with money after this season to give out big contracts to M. Moore, J. Beason, T. Davis, and D. Will the cornerstone and future of this team.
I say no thanks to trading D. Will period.
Now with that said if the Steelers or the Browns (apparently Marshall has visited up their recently) want R. Marshall I say let him go and we will take their second rounder in return.
I like your draft especially this Watson from FSU in the 3rd round. Not to crazy about J. Ordick however b/c their are going to be two great DT’s available with our first pick in the second round regardless of any trades.
Plus with moving R. Marshall we could move S. Martin back to CB where he truly belongs and we would have the best CB tandem in the NFC South can you imagine a secondary with S.Martin starting opposite C. Gamble talk about speed and skill man oh man.
I say see ya Marshall we need the draft pick more than you.

Funny you say that there might be multiple DT's left in the second
Because one of them could be Odrick. I would prefer to keep DWills, he’s a great running back. Nice point you make there. Hopefully the Panthers will spend their money on retaining their great players.
I disagree
Martin didn’t show me much at corner, and I’d rather pick up McCourty, Ghee, or Wilson in the second if we let him go.
Given the talent available later at DT, I think we should go Golden Tate at #22. We’ll need another big play threat even if Williams isn’t traded, and Alualu, Smith, Houston, etc will all be available in the second to third. Alualu looks especially appealing.

Why not...
Move Charles Godfrey back to Corner and put S. Martin in at Safey if Marshall leaves? Godfrey was a cb in college and Martin was a safety. U think it’d be hard for Godfrey to convert back to corner after 2 years as anNFL saftey?
I haven't seen Godfrey play corner at the NFL level.
Ever. I have seen Martin and I wasn’t impressed. Their best fit is at FS, and they can play corner in an emergency. Their flexibility is nice, but we have a good thing going in the secondary and I don’t want to mess with it.

yeah not saying I particularly agree with the second round tender
Godfrey’s history of playing corner, combined with Martin’s success last season at FS, along with Captain’s surprising contributions made the potential loss of Marshall a little less devastating, in the eyes of management, IMO.
Do or do not. There is no try.
Re:Crazy Draft Scenario
I think Marshall is as good as gone to Cleveland.
I hear rumors the Panthers are in talks with Williams to extend his contract. I could see a trade here if a long-term deal isn’t worked out before the draft.
Another possible trade could involve Otah. Schartz stepped in and as far I could tell we didn’t miss a beat.
I’m not saying we should, but keeping Otah and Khalil along with Wharton & Gross would mean we’d have $30-35 million a year tied up in the O-Line. We did sign Petit a T to a one year deal.

We're screwed if Marshall leaves
They should’ve put a first and third round tender on him
I dont want to loose either player....
But, if this did happen, what about taking Toby Gierhart(sp?) in the 2nd round? I think this guy could be a monster running behind our line.
I know this is looking very far into the future..
But I would love to see Mark Ingram come to Carolina to back-up Stewart. That is assuming we have parted ways with D-Will by that time. (I do think a trade will eventually happen just not within this next year)
Hahah.
That’s right, I forgot. I also didn’t realize he would be out next year, I was thinking he had another year to go after that.
He's a junior
Depends on whether or not there’s football in 2011, or a rookie pay scale. If there’s a lockout, he’ll stay in school. If there’s a pay scale implemented, he’ll come out if he continues his success. He could go top five, he projects as a #1 back like Emmit Smith.

Well..
In that case, we’ll just trade our 2nd rounder and the following years 2nd to Chicago for their top 3 pick that year, once they’ve cut and traded all of their star players to keep Pep, and they won’t be able to afford a 1st round pick. Haha. Kidding, kidding.
If we did manage some sort maneuver to grab him, that’d be one hell of a combo..
Sadly, Chicago would probably take the deal.
After all, they were dumb enough to give us Hitman for a 5th round pick.
As long as the Panthers don't trade for Michael Vick or draft Tim Tebow, my sanity (what's left of it, at least) will remain intact for 2010.
lolllllllllllllll
Seriously, they have had horrible overall play from the SS position since that trade…“The Curse of the HITMAN”
