The 2006 sixth round pick out of NC State wasn't tendered by the 49ers. Looks like a one-year deal for the dime corner and special teamer.

Yeah, I like it

Give us solid QB play and we are legit…no need to sell the farm for old FAs.

Do or do not. There is no try.

Pretty good choice.

But still, it can be taken to an extreme.

I wish the Panthers had gone for Anquan Boldin, a certain Seahawks receiver, or Antonio Bryant.

Too expensive.

We’re saving money, not trying to win next year.

It's impossible to do it if you cut a third of your starters and replace them with castoffs and unproven players.

So you’re saying there’s not a single proven player in the league that was, at one time, unproven? If not, why is it so far fetched that some of our younger players may “prove” themselves this year?

by D-Ranged1 on Mar 16, 2010 12:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Of course I'm not.

But I’m also saying that we’re not going to replace a third of our lineup with players who have never started before and expect to contend.

So six new starters means we will not contend?

Let’s see, RG, #2 WR and SLB were all being played by aging vets. Good but not great players in 2009. I would agree an entire new line-up of DL starters is a concern but we essentially did the same to the o-line before the 2008 season and then went top 10. The pash rush is a concern but I’m willing to see how things shake out before getting too down on this team

by Jaxon on Mar 16, 2010 7:47 PM EDT up reply actions

We did?

Our offensive line “reconstruction” was nothing like what we’re doing at DL. We had two players with over 50 starts each for us in Gross and Wharton, players who had played on playoff teams. And in addition to them, we had Ryan Kalil, who not only was viewed as a better future prospect than Johnson and Brown, but had already started more games as a rookie than Johnson and Brown did combined. Was he proven? No, but he was more proven than either of our DEs, and certainly more than any of our DTs as Panthers, and he also had the support of two established veterans who had seen success both in their own performances and the team’s. Brown and Johnson will line up next to players just as unestablished as them, if not more so.

And by the way, I’m not sure how FB+WR+OG+DE+DT+DT+DE+OLB=six.

LOL

Boy you jumped all over that didn’t you? MP’s got a point. Besides, when have the Panthers ever made big, splashy FA signings? It’s just not their style.

by The Duke Dude on Mar 16, 2010 9:35 AM EDT up reply actions

If the "big spenders" were a bit more of annual competitors..

I may be more inclined to believe the “money buys success in the NFL” philosophy. As is, it doesn’t seem like enough players live up to their value to warrant throwing a season away before it has even began for no other reason than the fact that we didn’t make any big FA signings.

Make your own list, if you think so little of theirs.

And I’m sure the Browns blog would love to discuss a few things with you. Take your sarcasm somewhere else — it’s gotten old.

Let's hope...

breaking in a new ST coach doesn’t take too long. It does sound like we got some tacklers. Question is to be we have the blockers?

Hey we are still going to be a great team

No moves we have made are going to really hurt us; as far as dumping aging vet’s that is something that we should have done after we lost in the NFC Championship in 2006. However every position that we cut a vet from we have great youth, speed, and depth. No reason to hit the paniac button b/c we have not signed a big name b/c we are not going to .

The media said the same thing about our 2003 squad and we were suppose to finish dead last in the NFC South and come nowhere close to making the playoffs let alone the super bowl.

by Holty_Panthers_Fan on Mar 15, 2010 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions

No we weren't.

ESPN.com’s Greg Easterbrook (Tuesday Morning Quarterback) picked us to tie for 2nd in the division and win a wild card spot at 9-7.

Hey ESPN sucks man

You cannot seriously use ESPN picks or past history as a defense for your case. ESPN is horrific with regard to predictions, blogs, and of course make calls about who is going where, when they are getting drafted etc…

Just take a glance at ESPN’s depth chart for most NFL teams during next season and you will see what I mean.

by Holty_Panthers_Fan on Mar 15, 2010 11:19 PM EDT up reply actions

So that's an example of this mysterious better source that picked us to finish last?

Easterbrook has been very accurate in his predictions.

Maybe we made a mistake cutting him in the first place

It is interesting to see what ex-panther is a the top of that list, Big D.

by bhwells29 on Mar 15, 2010 6:52 PM EDT reply actions

Good memory there, bhwells29!

Looks like he did it from 2 big games (1 vs Detroit) this year — nothing much last year with Jax. But 6 ST tackles in one game is pretty incredible. (We’re talking about Tim Shaw, guys)

by bigdavis on Mar 15, 2010 10:20 PM EDT up reply actions

He was a quality player who got caught up in the numbers game when we kept picking up talented LBs.

Sure would have been nice to have him around instead of Landon Johnson, though.

Replacement for D. Wesley

Well I guess D. Wesley has played his last game for the Cardiac Cats in his career unless injuries arise and he is still un-employeed in the middle of the season. Hudson is actually a better special teamers than wesley and easily a better CB.

Go Panthers.

What about M. Douglas

M. Douglas was here in Greensboro this weekend for religionus reasons and I am wondering if anyone has heard anything about the Panthers picking him up for veteran depth since we supposely showed interest a couple of weeks ago and we have heard nothing since.

Anyone heard anything ?

If he's interested in signing for peanuts, they'll have him.

Otherwise, he’ll be headed elsewhere. Protect the coffers!

I wouldn't go that far.

Hudson’s never been any better as a defensive player than Wesley, and Meeks loved what Wesley contributed in the Joker package.

by MichaelProcton on Mar 15, 2010 10:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Shouldn't have been greedy

Plus I don’t think Fox and Hurney wanted an aging CB that was nothing more than a special teams player ever in his career. Wesley was solid last year finally but before that who was he ? Seriously he was like CJ Wilson is now for us a nobody and that is why nobody is looking at a aging CB with almost zero speed left in the tank.

Sorry but I am glad Wesley was gone and and Hudson is a better special teams player just look at the chart posted by Bigdavis. Facts are facts and the joker package was only effect in like one or two games last year and wasn’t even used that much.

Boy one breakout game and Wesley gets all this praise as a special teams beast and a great player please with W. Wright and Hudson we are way better off.

You have to admit it is pretty pathetic that we are sitting here comparing which special teamer is better than the other. LOL.

by Holty_Panthers_Fan on Mar 15, 2010 11:25 PM EDT up reply actions

What?

How can a guy both be “solid” as a contributor on defense and “nothing more than a special teams player” at the same time?

The “chart” posted by BD also says that a TE was our best ST player.

I mean 3 great gunners on the roster couldn’t hurt imo. It would be nice to have all of them going down the field on kick offs especially since we lost Lloyd.

At some point, it's a roster management issue.

You can’t keep that many players who don’t contribute on either offense or defense without compromising your flexibility on game days.
