Panthers sign OT Rob Pettiti
"Off tackle Rob Pettiti signed with NFL Panthers. Considered UFL league best on OL. Started, played every snap w/ Cowboys as rookie."
- Ralph Cindrich, agent
--------------------------------------------
Keeping Petitti was another value pick by the Panthers. Gantt likes the signing too: "Petitti's actually a good value signing. He's the right kind of body for the Panthers O-line, and if nothing else has some experience."

Looks like our o-line might be set
If we keep 9 o-linemen then starting line-up is:
Gross, Wharton, Kalil, Bernadeau, Otah
Back-ups: Schwartz, Robinson, Gary Williams & Rob Petiti. That’s three tackles and a guard. Makes me think a rookie could come in and beat out Williams…a G/T combo. This doesn’t seem like the right mix of positions per the Panthers past opening day rosters.
Steve Justice and CJ Davis are on the roster to compete.
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
I think you're spot on with that.
I would still love to see Schwartz on the line instead of Bernadeau and turn it into a monster line (Schwartz has about 25lbs on Bernadeau).

That's the one unknown...RG
Who will take Vincent’s spot? Robinson seems more the roadgrader needed for that spot. But is he ready? I put Bern in there just because he placed so much last season at LG. But he may not be a RG…
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
I think Robinson is the long term answer
he was touted to be the best guard in that draft class, bargain for the panthers

And Jarrett was touted as one of the best receivers...
We see what that’s gotten us.

I think so
unless he totally bombs in camp or unless we bring in a real stud via the draft that tears it up in camp. Maybe Benn or Gilyard could displace Jarrett
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
And we know he rarely bombs in camp.
Jarrett’s all about lighting up the practice field.

Schwartz has also been discussed as an option to kick inside.
With both Williams and Pettiti on board, it’s certainly a possibility.

Good point...given his feet he may be better suited at RG anyway.

He certainly played well when given the opportunity, though.
Next to a guy like Otah, it might be better to have a nimble dude who can do some work in pass protection.

How about a combo C/G?
When Geoff Hangartner left we lost our back – up C and have been relying on Big Mack ever since. But, if he is starting at RG that is too risky for me.

As far as I can tell, his only experience there is six games as a senior in college. I wouldn’t feel comfortable with him as our primary backup at C.

While I'm an advocate that you can never have enough reserves on the offensive line...
I would like to see some more signings at our actual positions of need. This off seasons is becoming very frustrating, very quickly.
I am starting to feel like The Big Cat really is willing to field a sub-par team just for a season while business issues get worked out.
your right but odds are that we address our needs through the draft
its also still early in free agency. we might see more action in the 2nd or 3rd waves of free agency. this is unlikely however as free agency is not really our style. plus, the signing we do make are most likely not going to be big names or meant to make a big impact.

You can't address starter-level needs with a 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 6, and 7

But if he was referring to the loss of Peppers, that’ll come next year. AdamJT13’s projections are out, and he’s got us getting a 6th for both Hangartner and Omiyale, with a very long shot at a 7th for Mark Jones.

Relax
Right now you could be a Browns Fan!!!! LOL
Seriously though, relax and realize there are a ton of players that will eventually get cut going forward. The Panthers will scoop up a few surprise cuts. Just look at Bernard Pollard last year for the Texans! What a pickup that was, Chief’s aren’t looking too smart on that one.
Have comfort knowing that your team is managed by an economically intelligent front office. The players that were cut will be replaced with ease. Don’t rule out the resigning of Damione Lewis….the only guy cut that had an impact.
Definitely, but injuries have limited his impact.

Don't overlook leadership
Hoover was a pretty big leader on offense along with Moose (and obviously Delhomme). It will be interesting to see who becomes the vocal leader of the offense. Maybe Smitty will finally take over that role. Last time we tried to make him a captain he landed a big one on Ken Lucas in TC.

RG is going to be fine
With Scharwartz, G. Williams, and now Pettit we have depth on our OL and I will go as far as to say that we don’t need to draft a single OLineman with any of our limited picks.
RG- is going to be a battle between D. Robinson and Bernadeau in camp to see who wins the job.
Also we have signed quite a while ago Steve Justice of UFL and former draft pick of the Colts and he is slated to be our backup C/G as well serving the same role as Hangartner did for some many seasons.
No quite the signing we were hoping for but he we could have done worse.

What does he offer in 2011 and beyond? Don’t get me wrong, I’d like to see him back—thought he played well, just following recent trends…I’d go as far to say that had his contract not run out, he might have gotten a pink-slip like most of his over 30 brethren.

Exactly
The FO/ownership does not want to be on the hook for big contracts if there is no football. Plus there is a significant possibility the salary cap will decrease with the next agreement so we don’t want to risk the potential of losing our core players (DeAngelo, Beason, Kalil, Davis) b/c we overpaid for a FA this year.
Another option as well is that we maybe worried about a possible coaching change next year in which case we might need a different style of player.
Just some thoughts.

Jake Delhomme was stuck in NFL Europe for a season before being a 3rd stringer for another 3-4 seasons.
3rd string QB is analogous to being a special teamer at another position.
While I don’t think it’s an accident why these players are put in these positions, there’s also a good chance that a team has made a mistake overlooking these players, who like Delhomme, could blossom into starting caliber players.

Warner and Delhomme are the NFL Europe successes. In the whole league’s history. Like ever. I’m sorry, but Brian St. Pierre’s problem is not that he hasn’t gotten an opportunity. It’s that he’s not very good.

Regardless of how slim the chances the NFL is littered with players who blossomed over time, it’s not limited to Delhomme and Warner- look at Wes Welker who was stuck on special teams and as a 4th receiver for three years before blossoming in New England.
Just as I think it’s shortsighted to make a comment like ‘Every player picked in the first round is starting caliber’ the flip side is ‘Player X is a career special teamer’. In both instances there is a slight possibility said player will be a bust in the 1st, or blossom on another team.
That’s what we’re hoping for.
