Panthers Mock Draft Roll-up

So with the Panthers recent Over-30 roster purge comes the need to update the mock draft predictions. I took a look around the web to see if there were any significant changes in what the pundits are predicting for the Panthers.  Here’s some of those that have been updated:

Walter Football: 2nd Round: Mardy Gilyard, WR/KR, Cincinnati

Steve Smith recently stated that he would love to have another fast receiver to complement him on offense. Ask, and you shall receive. Mardy Gilyard, as seen in the Senior Bowl, is a deep-play threat, and he would satisfy two huge areas of need for the Panthers: No. 2 wideout and return specialist.

I think Gilyard will be there but the Panthers won’t pick him (simply because he's my choice of Golden Tate is gone).

3rd Round: Tyson Alualu, DT, California
Outside of Julius Peppers, no one on Carolina had more than five sacks. The Panthers really need help on the interior of their defensive line, especially with news that Ma'ake Keomeatu's progress back from Achilles' surgery wasn't going very well (which led to his release).

We seem to be set at DT so the Panthers would have to really think he is a value pick to make this selection.  Hard to argue with adding a DT though.

3rd Round: Jason Fox, OT, Miami
Offensive line depth was a huge issue for the Panthers this past season. If they have another injury, they need to make sure they have someone to keep Travelle Wharton from moving over to left tackle.

Jason Fox is really talented and would be an early second-round prospect if it weren't for his injury concerns. It may sound counterintuitive to draft a risk as insurance for injuries, but Fox is that much of a great value in Round 4.

O-line depth was an issue? Yes we needed our depth but I thought they filled in pretty good.

2nd Round: Mardy Gilyard

3rd Round: Greg Hardy DE Mississippi6' 5" 255 – I would be happy with getting Hardy in the 3rd

4th Round    Darrell Stuckey Safety  Kansas6' 1" 205

Intimidating, rips the ball from receivers hands, reads the quarterbacks eyes well, comes up to stuff the run, fills the holes at the line of scrimmage, hard tackler, likes the big hit. Needs to improve man coverage against receivers, tendency to put his head down and miss tackles, needs to get stronger to prevent getting run over by NFL tight ends.

This would be a classic Panthers BPA pick as we seem pretty set at S unless he is seen as an upgrade to Quinton Teal. Also, if Sherrod Martin returns to CB then we need some depth at safety.

6th Round Tim Hiller QB Western Michigan6' 5" 225

Good enough arm strength, accurate, good short range arm strength, smart quarterback, does not force passes. Deep ball hangs in the air, not mobile, needs to improve pocket presence.

He’s size, smarts and a strong arm. Hiller is just the kind of QB the Panthers might draft, good pick.

7th Round: Nathan Overbay TE Eastern Washington6' 5" 270

Massive target with excellent size - 6'5" 265 lbs. Great hands. Lacks initial burst and explosion off the line of scrimmage - can get jammed easily. Inconsistent blocker but has the size to improve. Must get stronger.

7th Round Comp pick: Chris Cook CB Virginia6' 2" 210

The annual obligatory Panthers TE draft pick. I’m not feeling a TE this year unless Germain Gresham should fall to the 3rd round. There is room though for a CB on this roster. The Panthers will look to upgrade their depth in the defensive backfield.

Footballs Future:

2nd Round: Carlos Dunlap, DL, Florida

If Dunlop is there expect the Panthers to run to the podium!

Draft Countdown:

2nd Round: Mardy Gilyard

FF Toolbox:

Jared Odrick, DT, Penn State

Jared Odrick has been great this year, racking up 41 tackles, 10 TFL and six sacks. He has first-round talent, but will likely go in Round 2 because of an arrest back in March.

Another guy I would be surprised if he is there. It so I would have no problem with this pick.

My NFL Draft:

2nd Round: Arthur Jones   6-3/302 lbs DT Syracuse

No surprise a lot of mocks are switching the Panthers to a defensive line pick.

6th round

i think that adamjt17 or whatever his name is…the guy who is a guru at predicting comp. picks said we would probably get 2 6th rounders this year…

I don't know if I fully agree with any of the mocks.

I like draftsite.com with Hiller in the 6th- but saying we take a safety in the 4th?

+1

The only way we should be looking at a safety that early is if a highly rated player drops way down, a 2nd round talent in the 4th.

I like the Fox pick!

He’ll be a good LT one day he’s a good all around OT if he’s there in the 4th I’d take him.:)

This sig is dedicated to those cut in the 2009 purge.

What's up with that 2nd round pick Jaxon?

Looks like there’s a typo there. I’m sure you meant Jacoby Ford.

Lol. This is never going to get old.

Maybe if he's there in the 3rd

At this point the 2nd is too high to be thinking about Ford…and there really is a chance he could fall to us in the 3rd and I would take him there especially if we go defense in the 2nd.

by Lawboy987 on Mar 12, 2010 4:18 PM EST up reply actions

If he's still there....

I wouldn’t mind seeing us take Javan Snead in the 5th (he’s being project 5th). He’s a big kid with a strong arm, but he is a lefty.

by Lawboy987 on Mar 12, 2010 4:29 PM EST reply actions

Never Mind

We don’t have a 5th due to the Tank Tyler pick up. But if we get one (it could happen), I think Snead would be a good pick up.

Compensatory picks

This doesn’t take into account the compensatory picks we’ll land for losing so many FAs.

We’ll learn more later this month, but I’ve read that we’ll be getting possibly a late 3rd and a handful of second day picks.

I like Walt's draft

I’m not as big a fan of Wharton at LT as most people.

Jake Delhomme, QB Carolina Panthers, 2003-2009.

120 TDs+16000+ passing yards=Good

89 INT's+27 lost fumbles=Bad

Most comeback wins since 2003=Priceless

by Flowing Willow on Mar 13, 2010 5:00 AM EST reply actions

Neither am I

But Wharton doesn’t figure to be playing LT in 2010. Gross will be back and Wharton will be moving back to LG.

I do not see us going O-Line until round 6.

We are very strong with the starters and have had success drafting quality backups late. I think our needs are:
1. DE
2. WR
3. LB
4a. QB
4b. DT
6. OL

On another note, there is a rumor that Brady Quinn is available potentially for a late round pick. We could give a future pick (3rd or 4th round) based on playing time or performance. I think he is a quality QB who needs a solid running game like say . . . Double Trouble. Just a thought.

Will Parker

by WillParker81 on Mar 13, 2010 4:02 PM EST reply actions

True

However we need a LT, and LT is one of those positions where the higher the pick, the better shot you have of them working out. I’m also not a fan of the second tier DE prospects. Hardy is lazy, and we can’t count on Griffen or Dunlap to fall to us. A fourth round guy like Daniel Teo-Neishem, Jermaine Cunningham, or Alex Carrington would help out tremendously.

Jake Delhomme, QB Carolina Panthers, 2003-2009.

120 TDs+16000+ passing yards=Good

89 INT's+27 lost fumbles=Bad

Most comeback wins since 2003=Priceless

Gilyard/Ford/Pike

I’d like to see us take Gilyard in the second. If he is not there then I would like to see us pick QB Tony Pike in the second and get Ford in the third.

Best case scenario

This is my take on the best case scenario for the Carolina Panthers 2010 draft.

1st round – No pick. Sigh

2nd round – Demaryius Thomas WR: Broken foot and no combine work will lower his draft stock and he will most likely still be on the board at 47. Excellent playmaker and great compliment to Steve Smith as a vertical huge target. Alt: Terrance Cody/Corey Woolton

3rd round – Lemarr Houston DE/DT- 57 tackles (38 solo), 13.5 tackles for loss, seven sacks. Yep, I’d take that. Alt: Taylor Price/Mardy Gilyard; assuming Thomas isnt there and we go DL 2nd round, and yes, Gilyard should still be available.

4th round – Dekoda Watson LB – Great straight line speed and recovery speed. Able to play all LB positions. Tough, plays hurt. Alt: Donald Butler

5th round – No pick. Step it up Tank!

6th round – Kevin Haslam OT/OG – Anthony Davis got all the ink, but Haslam will be a good reserve, spot starter.

7th round – Sean Canfield QB – Pro style pocket passer with great accuracy and passable arm strength.

6th/7th round comp pick – Marcus Easley WR – Take a flier on a fast, hard working kid with good hands who continues to improve yearly.

Mock Draft

From the various sites, it looks as though our pick may be a little high for Gilyard’s value.

I noticed USA’s top 64 and considered another approach: as many DT’s as we have, if Alabama’s DT Terrence Cody is available, grab him; at 370 lbs, he may overshadow all three interior offensive linemen. If not, I know this is a draft rich in offensive linemen, but they mention Vladimir Ducasse of UMass, who can play every offensive line position + defensive line: with past injury problems plus the impending departure of our right guard, this might be of value; he’s also an athletic 326 lbs. As good as our left side is, can you imagine the hole he and Otah could make for a running back?

In the third round, I would take a shot with Edwards of Appalachian: if he doesn’t pan out as a 5’11" QB, he is still an amazing runner with hands for WR; I have never seen anyone his size carry tacklers (even Wolverines).

For back-up QB, I suggest another route: in 2007, out first QB injury was not Delhomme; Brett Basanez was having another great pre-season before he went on IR. He left for Chicago but remained on the Practice Squad; they loved him so much they pulled him off long enough to get a roster bonus, but they have too many names to keep him active. He knows our QB position and would make a great #2 with minimal cost (which appears high on the Panthers agenda). He would still only be 27 by training camp in case we needed to shift gears on our “franchise” QB. {I’m also curious about possible #3 Hunter Cantwell. He looked pretty good for the couple of passes he got to throw in pre-season.}

I like Cody

And believe that if you have needs on the O or D-line, you address those first in the draft. I can point to a lot more quality WRs, QBs, and RBs, that have been drafted late, or gone undrafted, then I can find quality lineman with the same late entry into the league.

Do or do not. There is no try.

by ERL on Mar 15, 2010 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Everyone knows I love Armanti

But the third is still just to high. I’m fairly confident he will last until at least the fifth round.

It is going to depend on his pro-day. He was impressive throwing the football at the combine, but he has expressed on his online journal that he wants to show off his speed and development as a possible WR at the Appalachian State pro-day.

He would be a great pick for us because of that versatility. We can specialize him however we want. The kid can play. However, he is not going to cost anyone a 3rd round pick.

Who?

Who’s going to make it to the 5th round?
