Panthers Pro Day Update 1
Here's a Panthers Pro Day update but I have to say up front it's all speculation on my part. It seems teams are going to greater lengths to suppress which Pro Days they are attending as in most cases all that is said is "26 teams were in attendance" without naming the teams. Maybe someone reading knows of a site that is listing the teams in attendance and can provide a link. The NFL.com and CBS sites gives some details but in many cases no team's are identified. I think I've seen two references to the Panthers at Pro Days and that is it so far.
So what I have done is highlighted the guys that are at positions of need for the Panthers, who did not attend the combine and who impressed the scouts at their Pro Day.
Let us know if you have any insight or thoughts on these guys.
Oklahoma State
Quarterback Zac Robinson threw again for scouts Wednesday. Robinson said a shoulder injury that he suffered on Nov. 14 against Texas Tech has healed.
I like the way he played in the Senior Bowl so he's still my favorite for a 5th or 6th round pick.
Alabama
Representatives from every NFL team were at the facility in Tuscaloosa, Ala., including Giants general manager Jerry Reese, Giants head coach Tom Coughlin and linebackers coach Jim Herrmann, Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum and coach Rex Ryan, Browns defensive coordinator Rob Ryan and defensive line coach Bryan Cox, Panthers coach John Fox and Packers general manager Ted Thompson.
No surprise Fox attended this one given his old friend Sal Sunseri no coaches for 'Bama.
Washington
The scouts were treated to a fabulous breakfast before watching prospects like DE Daniel Te'o-Nesheim, who backed up his solid performance at the NFL Scouting Combine with a stellar set of position drills Wednesday.
Some are saying he is projecting as a 3-4 rush LB but could still be a 4-3 DE.I'm hoping we focus more on a run-stopping DE versus a fast guy.
Kansas
Defensive end Maxwell Onyegbule (6-4 5/8 268) ran 4.98 and 4.94 in the 40, had a 32-inch vertical leap, 9-10 broad jump, 4.45 short shuttle, 7.26 three-cone drill and completed 19 bench press reps.
Could be a late round flyer?
Colorado
University of Colorado cornerback Ben Burney may have boosted his chances of securing gainful employment after graduation, clocking 4.38 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the school's pro day. Burney, who did not participate in the NFL Scouting Combine, was impressive in all of the skills (see below) and his performance elevated him from a free agent to a low draft choice.
A late round CB could be in the plan.
Central Oklahoma
Defensive lineman Jermelle Cudjo (6-foot-2, 293 pounds) ran 5.1 seconds twice in the 40-yard dash, had a 30-inch vertical, 8-8 broad jump, 4.58 short shuttle, 7.42 three-cone drill, and did 24 bench press repetitions.
I just liked the thought of having a DT named Cudjo!
Ball State
Cork (5-9, 192), a place-kicker from Anderson College, ran 4.56 and 4.56 in the 40, had a 38-inch vertical leap, 9-6 broad jump, 4.68 short shuttle, 7.66 three-cone drill and had 20 bench press reps.
But can he kick the piss out of the ball?
Oklahoma
CB Dominique Franks (5-11 1/4, 191) ran a blazing 4.47-second 40, which would have tied him for third best at the combine among cornerbacks. He had an 11.72-second 60-yard shuttle, the only other event he participated in.
NT DeMarcus Granger (6-1, 320) only took part in the bench press. His 32 reps would have tied him for the sixth-best mark among defensive linemen at the combine.
Franks is an early to mid-round pick so he probably is not a target but the Granger guy could be a late rounder at NG given his size.
Utah
LB Sylvester Stevenson (6-2 1/4, 232) kept his 40 time from the combine, had a 30.5 vertical jump, 8-9 broad jump, 4.56 short shuttle, 7.22 three-cone drill and 21 reps in the bench press.
DE/OLB prospect Koa Misi, who I listed months ago as a Diamond in the Rough, has emerged as a legitimate top 75 candidate after impressing during the Senior Bowl and Combine in drills. A defensive end for the Utes, Misi is considered more athletic than his former teammate Paul Kruger, a second round pick by Baltimore last year that successfully made the transition from defensive end to outside linebacker for their 3-4 scheme. Misi, who did the entire workout at the Combine, didn't run the 40-yard dash or do all of the timed drills Monday. He did, however, cut his short shuttle time from 4.30 to 4.21 and looked very good in positional drills.
I liked Sylvester form the Combine so he could be a mid-round pick. Misi could be an early round target for the Panthers if they think he can play a 4-3 DE. It's about time be drafted another Ute!
Wyoming
Though neither John Fletcher nor Mitch Unrein were invited to the Combine, both could earn late round selections in next month's draft. They are among the few defensive linemen available in this draft with experience playing in the 3-4. Both, however, appear to have enough size and athleticism to potentially see action for 4-3 teams, as well.
According to sources, fourteen teams were on hand to see the two put forth their best efforts Thursday. The Colts seemed particularly interested in Fletcher and the Titans in Unrein.
Fletcher measured in at 6-5 1/4 and 270 pounds. Fletcher was faster than expected with a 4.87 40-yard dash (despite battling a hamstring pull) and a 4.5 short shuttle. He had a 33" vertical, a 9'10" broad jump and a posted 21 reps of 225 pounds.
Unrein measured in at 6-3 3/4 and 276 pounds. He was impressive in positional drills and clocked in with a 4.84 second 40-yard dash, 4.6 short shuttle, and 7.3 long shuttle. He posted 26 repetitions of 225 pounds and measured in at 31" in the vertical and 8'10" in the broad jump.
If the Colts and Titans are interested, whom both play a 4-3, then certainly the Panthers could be interested. Both look like great athletes.
Florida Atlantic
Quarterback Rusty Smith was, of course, the headliner. The 6-5 (even), 224 pound Smith was clocked at 4.83 in the 40-yard dash and showed off his strong arm and quicker release. Smith, whose long windup had previously generated concern from scouts similar to that from another state of Florida quarterback, has worked hard to improve it. According to scouts in attendance, Smith was a bit sporadic with his accuracy, but possesses the raw tools to earn late round or PFA consideration.
Carolina was confirmed as one of the teams in attendance. It would be very Panther like for them to pick a guy like Smith late or even go after him as soon as the draft is over if he remains undrafted.
Kansas State
Defensive end Jeffrey Fitzgerald , one of the players Chad Reuter and I agreed was one of the biggest Combine snubs this year, was the headlining act.
Fitzgerald measured in at 6-3 5/8, 270 pounds -- one pound less than he had at the East-West Shrine Game. According to scouts representing an estimated ten teams on hand, Fitzgerald was clocked in the low 4.8s in the 40-yard dash and was clocked at 4.30 in the short shuttle, which would have placed him among the top ten defensive linemen tested in Indianapolis. Fitzgerald also had 21 repetitions of 225 pounds for the bench press.
Fitzgerald earned Defensive MVP honors for the Wildcats in 2009, posting 40 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and 7 sacks. He also forced three fumbles and returned an interception 17 yards for a score against Texas Tech.
Originally signing with Virginia, Fitzgerald impressed early on, earning Freshman All-American honors by posting 64 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and leading the Cavs with 6 sacks. He posted 73 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss and 7 sacks a year later, but elected to transfer to Kansas State to play under former Virginia assistant coach Ron Prince after academic problems.
Fitzgerald may have been a bigger name if he had avoided the academic problems and stayed at UVA somehow. Those are big numbers from his first two years.

No idea what happened to Rusty this year.
He was great in his junior year and slaughtered the competition, but the QB from Florida Atlantic absolutely imploded this year. No idea what happened to him.
He has the tools to be a starter though.

I'm sure he had an eye on Mt. Cody
along with the other 31 teams.
i hope he was looking at cody
The big boy is down 21 lbs. From the senior bowl. And he wants to get down to 340. That is a 2 gap DT if I have ever seen one.
Richardson you better not screw this up for me!

I'd like to have him as a Hollis Thomas type for 1st down
But I think he will be gone early because he is the best nose tackle, something all the 3-4 teams will covet.
Do or do not. There is no try.
yeah prolly
You know who I really like is Dan Williams from Tennessee.
Do or do not. There is no try.

More on Gilyard
Gilyard is hoping to go in the first or second round. Several Bengals coaches attended the workout, though the team hasn’t given him any indication that it’s particularly interested. The Bengals could use a slot receiver and kick returner, and Gilyard would love to stay in town.

Do you think they would still take a WR after signing Antonio Bryant? It seems to me that the Bengals WR corps are pretty full, unless they’re looking to trade someone.

Yeah not sure that anyone needs to stockpile that many receivers
Maybe they just went to get out of the office.
Do or do not. There is no try.
Watch out for March 29
The fightin Indians of Newberry got a guy who can flat out fly!! I remember asking a defensive player at Carson Newman about the Indians Prospect and he said, “I’m fast, like 4.39 fast, but that kid….He got world class speed!”
Fox at Alabama
John’s not in Tuscaloosa to visit his old buddy. He just cut his long kicker, Kasay is over 40, and Alabama kicker Leigh Tiffin is the top prospect for 2010.
Makes sense to me...except this is worrisome
he’s the 8th ranked kicker:
Leigh Tiffin struggled from long distance in 2008. Sure, he was 2-of-3 from 50-plus, but he was just 2-of-7 from 40 to 49.
