Charles Grant
Charles Grant was released from the Saints last week and has expressed a desire to play for the Carolina Panthers. I think we can all agree we need help at the DE position, and he has been somewhat productive in his tenure with the Saints. I myself am I fan of bringing him in. He is pretty solid against the run, but isn't a particularly good pass rusher. In my opinion, Brown and Johnson would create a formidable pass rush on the edges, and have a guy like grant in on first and some second downs would certainly help keep those guys fresh and provide a solid run stopper.
He would come at a relatively cheap price, probably somewhere around 3 mil a year (although it seems we won't sign anyone who wants more than 1 mil a year...) What do you guys think?

He ranked #32 out of 33 DE's, by ProFootballFocus
Far inferior production to Tyler Brayton in every way I can see. I can understand why they let him go.
I'd rather try out Greg Ellis.
I think Grant’s about done but having them both would be nice. Also, I don’t like it when players state which teams they “wouldn’t mind” playing for
i agree
that’d I’d rather have ellis, but i think ultimately he ends up back in Dallas where he played for most his career…

Grant is the kind of player the Panthers would look at
Our DE’s could use a vet…
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
haha added a fanshot of this around the same time
I’d like to see it, being that our 3rd DE is Hilee Taylor at the moment (assuming he would sign on the cheap). Taylor offers virtually no run-support, and neither does Brown. So we have to be looking for a DE that can ‘set the edge.’ Unless we have a DT that can play outside on running downs, I’m not confident we can contain the off-tackle and stretch plays.
Do or do not. There is no try.
im hoping our run stopping gets a lot better when dan conner comes in and tackles everything that breathes

This will probably help, too.
But we’ve got to keep TEs and O-lineman off of him so he can make plays. Especially is he is on the strong side.

I'd like Grant on the left, put Johnson on the right
with Brown and a rookie spelling them. I’m not totally comfortable with Brown starting, at least until I see how his run support is. Grant would be good to set the edge.
Jake Delhomme, QB Carolina Panthers, 2003-2009.
120 TDs+16000+ passing yards=Good
89 INT's+27 lost fumbles=Bad
Most comeback wins since 2003=Priceless
The edge of what? Disaster?
See the stats above – there are only 6 DEs in the league who rank worse than Grant does against the run.
Plus he had Starcaps involvement – Panthers won’t be interested in this 31 1/2 year old — he’s on his way out of the league.
OK
Maybe he is not our guy, I don’t know very much about him. Every season he has had somewhere between 45-75 tackles, which is a high number for a DE. He is around 285lbs, so he fits that profile as a run player. Don’t really have any tape on him, so using the above criteria to make an assumption that he would be a better option that Taylor or Brown against the run. It is clear we are in the market for someone to replace Brayton…It may or may not be Marquis Douglass.
Disaster?

I'm still hopeful Brayton returns.
Far as I know, he’s not signed with Seattle, and we DID supposedly make an offer. It’s not like we cut him — he’s just testing the market.
