Should the Panthers pursue Torry Holt?

I just read a short article saying that the Jag's are going to cut Holt on Monday.  We have discussed our need at WR already, but I do not recall anyone mentioning Holt as an option (at the time he was not available).  The rest of this post will be discussed assuming Holt will become a free agent.  More after the jump.

Star-divide

I would like for the Panthers to sign him and here is why:

1.  He is still productive with 51 catches for 722 yards.

2.  He has great hands and I see him as a Ricky Proehl type player for us, maybe even better.

3.  He is from NC and has stated previously that he would like to play for the Panthers

I would like to see Moose come back or another free agent WR and battle, and probably win the #2 spot with Jarrett.  Then we could have Holt in the slot to help with keep drives going on 3rd downs.  Plus we can draft a quick and fast WR to help with punt and kick returns who could eventually replace Holt in the slot.  That would give us a receiver core of Smitty #1, Moose (or other free agent) #2, Holt #3, drafted return man #4, and Jarrett or Kenny Moore #5.

So, now you have had a minute to think about it and formulate your opinions, what do you think?

Holt and Moose are the same player this point in their career.

If Moose leaves for greener pastures (again) then I’m all for Holt as the slot receiver in Carolina.

However, if Moose stays I don’t see a place for Holt. The Panthers receiving corps needs young talent, preferably that can help on special teams.

true

the only thing is holt probably has a bit more speed than moose.

by SouthernPanther on Feb 6, 2010 3:24 PM EST up reply actions

I would agree that speed is a difference.

It seems to me that Holt has better hands and would be more reliable as a pass catcher. While moose would be a better blocker in the run game.

this sums it up perfectly

We are a running team. Moose has already been here many years and proved he is a great run blocker. Holt would be cool if Moose goes, but I think if they let Moose go they are going to go for younger guys all around and Holt will not be included in that discussion.

by Justinrl on Feb 7, 2010 12:57 PM EST up reply actions

At this point in their careers both have evolved into reliable possession receivers rather than burners.

Holt used to be the burner for St. Louis, while Bruce was the possession guy.

It’s a natural progression when receivers get older. The great ones with the reliable hands and excellent route running become those 2nd and 3rd options while the guys who relied too much on speed to flt out lose their coverage have much shorter careers.

I think Holt has a lot left in the tank because he is one of the greats, but I just don’t see him fitting with a Panthers team that keeps Moose.

Absolutely not.

Holt is past his prime. His 51 catches last year were the lowest of his career, and they are the most of any receiver in the league with 0 TD’s. He only recorded 2.2 YAC, and is ranked below Dwayne Jarrett (who is 10 years younger, and 4" taller than Holt) by PFF:

I don't know how much stock I put in those 'rankings'

It takes a lot of convincing for me that the following recievers were better than Smitty:

- Devin Aromashodu
- Jason Avant
- Kelley Washington
- Chris Chambers

by James Dator on Feb 6, 2010 6:07 PM EST up reply actions

Aromashodu will be good

Him and Cutler will be one heck of a tandem.

But back to the topic on hand, we need to get younger at the receiver position, so getting younger FA’s, like Walter or Washington, and drafting receivers should be a priority. Holt doesn’t fit with the ultimate agenda, which is why I don’t think he will be signed.

Just to note..

None of those guys are ranked a better receiver than Smith, it is the blocking and, mostly, penalties that lower Smith’s over-all grade.

I can’t imagine the first part of our season allowed them to truly rate Smith, though, considering who was throwing the ball to him.

I do think the Panthers need a veteran WR on the roster

But would prefer Moose over Holt provided we draft a rookie for the slot. If Moose leaves then Holt might be a good option, but I can’t see both of the roster

We already have Moose!

Don’i you guts think we should get younger at the position? Also, do you think that the Panthers Front Office will be interested in acquiring the services of Donte Stallworth?

by bhwells29 on Feb 6, 2010 9:36 PM EST reply actions

no way

i don’t see us going anywhere near stallworth. Thats the wrong kind of publicity for jerry richardson

by SouthernPanther on Feb 6, 2010 10:44 PM EST up reply actions

T.O. is the wrong kind of publicity...

I believe Stallworth, as Vick, was a guy who made an off field mistake and has since paid the price. Off field incidents shouldn’t even be considered, considering this is football and not “come have dinner with my family” lol. There are other organizations in the world that handle those situations, hopefully the NFL and its teams focus on football.

I believe Stallworth would end up a very key figure in making a Super Bowl run next year. Could we be the first team to have two thousand yard rushers AND two thousand yard receivers? Has it ever been done before, anyone? That’d be awesome.

The Stallworth situation

Was unfortunate for both Stallworth and the victim. Anyone that knows me, knows that I would usually not advocate someone in Stallworth’s shoes as a victim of circumstance, but I will now.

I won’t dive much back into the case other than to say that it was an unfortunate accident. Wrong place, wrong time for both.

Stallworth would be a great add for this team, as he is still young and talented. Not to mention, he will be looking to play his heart out for whatever team signs him, to prove his worth again, and cast this incident to the side.

On top of that, he can probably be had on the cheap.

by Tater596 on Feb 8, 2010 11:52 AM EST up reply actions

hes not that young

hes 29 going on 30.

i do like him and feel bad for him and the victims. its not like hes a locker room problem. i just dont understand why he hasnt had a 1000 yard season or stay on one team for too long. he has such potential. its just baffling

by pantherpride on Feb 10, 2010 10:02 PM EST up reply actions

I wish they would.

If they let the ‘hype’ keep him out of Carolina, it’ll be a mistake. Having Stallworth and Smith lining up opposite one another would be a nightmare for defenders. That would push Moose to slot if he stays and, with Moore at QB, we could likely become one of the better passing teams (to our extent, at least, with our running game and all). Stallworth is my #1 FA pick-up if the Browns don’t retain him.

by D-Ranged1 on Feb 7, 2010 1:18 PM EST up reply actions

I would consider Stallworth a decent option

If he’s not going to be a distraction – I know he’s sorry for what he did (but, aren’t we all after we get caught doing something we shouldn’t do?), so I just don’t know if it’s worth the risk to bring him on board.

And, on the football side of the story: has he ever played a full season without being hurt? As far back as I can remember, he hasn’t. The last thing we need is a guy who may or may not play any given week because of injury.

If he could stay healthy and if he could prevent being a distraction, then I would say go for it – but those are two huge ifs that I don’t know if Big Cat and the coaching staff would be prepared to deal with and take the risk.

If Moose leaves then maybe

He will be cheap

I would think. Worth the risk IMO.

by Tater596 on Feb 8, 2010 11:55 AM EST up reply actions

Since I'm starting the bandwagon...

Draft Mardy Gilyard…..forget about Holt, forget about DUI Stallworth, draft Gilyard.

by BW Smith on Feb 6, 2010 11:47 PM EST reply actions

Maybe I still think getting Cribbs would be great for us.

Only if Moose is not going to return and if we can get Holt on a one year deal for say $1-2 million. If not keep Moose, get a starter in here and draft Gilyard which would be huge.

What why not trade with the Browns and get Cribbs ? I mean check out their depth chart the guy is dying to get out of Cleveland and they never let him play any downs. We would however and that would take care of your slot receiever and return game would then be one of the league’s best. I just wondering what it would take to get Cribbs probably nothing much since Cleveland doesn’t seem to value him that much for some reason.

I think Cribbs is a beast.

Imagine if we could get Cribbs AND Gilyard

We might actually see a return-TD within the next 5 years … lol

That’d be awesome, I’ve never seen a panthers return TD

Rod Smart

I miss Rod Smart. He was so much fun to watch returning kicks back in the day!!!

I had an idea!

What if we traded for Devin Hester he’s a great return man and he is a pretty good WR too.:)

it would take too much to get him

He’s the only legitimate threat the Bears have at WR right now – they wouldn’t part ways with him so easily.

But it would be a nice move if we could get him.

by BW Smith on Feb 7, 2010 2:00 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah...just not the Panthers MO

Either a low price FA on the down slope or an under-achiever looking for a fresh start

I'd love to bring in Holt.

It might mean the end of Moose’s stay or it might not. We can still draft our PR/KR specialist and Dwayne “I’m still only 23” Jarrett can still be our future #2.

On a somewhat related note, I wish we could find a roster spot for Mcknight out of USC.

by Mr. E on Feb 7, 2010 5:21 PM EST reply actions

What do you guys think of Lance Moore?

he would be relatively low priced, is young, good slot receiver, and is a special teams player. if he can block i feel llke he would be a good addition to our team.

by pantherpride on Feb 10, 2010 10:07 PM EST reply actions

Hell, yeah, let's collect the whole set!
  1. Moore, Brandon
  2. Moore, D.J.
  3. Moore, Dre
  4. Moore, Evan
  5. Moore, Kareem
  6. Moore, Kenneth
  7. Moore, Kyle
  8. Moore, Lance
  9. Moore, Matt
  10. Moore, Mewelde
  11. Moore, William
