The Panthers TE Triple Threat

The Panthers have three TE's on the roster who all have gotten playing time this season.  Two i absolutely love, and one (Jeff King) I think it is time to part ways with.  I know we have King because of his blocking capabilities, but how many false start and holding calls did he draw this year, which makes me wonder if he is even worth that  (One holding call that really sticks out to me was against the Giants that negated a 50 yard run by J-Stew)? King also seems to have trouble holding onto the ball.  I feel like every other time he catches a ball he almost fumbles it and he is slow as molasses.  Anyways, Rosario seems like the real deal catching passes, and from what I've noticed he actually looks like he is a pretty solid blocker (His great catch on the sidelines against NE and he had a couple great one handed snags during the season that really stuck out to me).  Barnidge I've loved from the start.  He has great hands, and seems like a pretty good Mid-Range/Deep-Threat tied end (Did anyone see him drag Cedric Griffin down the field twenty yards before he got tackled against the Vikings). I've seen Barnidge go over the middle several times this season and make great catches.  Anyways, the reason I'm writing this is because I want to know what you guys think.  I'm a strong fan of Rosario and Barnidge and I really don't like King.  But maybe there are some things that I have missed.  Please post it up on here and let me know what everyone else thinks about our Tied End situation  This is my first fan posting and I'm very excited about being on CSR!!!  Panthers for life baby!!!!!

PS.  I would like to point out that in another article I was reading one of our fellow CSR's pointed out a potential trade of Julius Peppers to Dallas for a 2nd round pick and Mercedes Bennett (A very talented tied end who plays behind Witten)  He is a pretty strong blocker and is very athletic with great hands.  Plus he is YOUNG, and could be a staple tight end in this league for years to come.  I think he could really be a great weapon (Yes a weapon at tight end — we haven't had that since wesley walls) for Matt Moore, a tied end is a QB's best friend.  I personally love this idea, I think he would be a great addition to an offense that looked great with Matt Moore at the helm and the best running back duo in the league (this isn't even an argument, whoever thinks otherwise is WRONG)!!!!!!

Nice first post SouthernPanthers...and welcome to the blog if I have been remiss to do that already

The Panthers have a very nice mix of TE talent in my view. I voted Barnidge as having the most upside. He seems to have the size, skill and hands to be the #1 TE. Heck we thought he had ascended to #1 in TC last season only to see him slide back to #3 once the season started. Maybe he moves up for good this year and King does become expendable as you suggest.

Rosario just is not the blocker Fox requires of an every down TE. I like the idea some have of lining Rosario up in the slot at times. Remember the 2008 season opener when Rosario put up seems like 7 catches, 100+ yards and the game winning TD? He’s too good of a pass catcher to give up IMO.

Thanks

I voted Rosario just because he seems a little more athletic than Barnidge, but I do really like Barnidge very much. And yes I loved that game against the Chargers when Rosario made that great game winning catch!!! I really don’t think King is what we need though, plus I’m tired of TV announcers mixing up Jeff King and Brad Hoover =P.

I voted Rosario as well.

He’s more of a well rounded player than Barnidge, though both have receiving skills. I would like for us to keep King though, while he isn’t as electric as the other two, he is a reliable blocker, and is underrated as a pass catcher. He led the team in receiving TD’s for anyone not named Smith I believe. They weren’t little one yard dinks either, his TD vs Washington put us in the lead and was a beauty of a corner route. He does need to cut back on penalties, but I see no reason why a reliable TE like him should be allowed to hit the market.

I voted for Rosario as the most upside

just how athletic he is and how involved he can get in the passing game is promising. my favorite though is Barnidge. I love how he can go deep for a tight end. he just needs more involvement.

I mentioned earlier that tight end is one of the few positions where we could afford to lose someone. I like King, hes a solid player, but if we had the other 2 starting for less money and more upside then i wont complain.

I think Barnidge

Has the most potential but Rosario is more polished IMO.

Just a point i didn't make in the article

The panthers do run lots of 2 tight end sets, so it is possible that we would see a lot of both. Both getting solid playing time would really help us make the decision as to who is better. So far it looks like we are all at least on the same page that Jeff King is not the TE of the future for the Panthers.

Do you remember a guy by the name of Kris Mangum?

Solid TE, limited receiving skills, but great blocker, he’s one of those guys who sticks around for ten-twelve years. King and Mangum are the same type of guy, they may not be exceptionally gifted, but they work hard and earn their paycheck. And end up staying for their career. So explain how King isn’t the “future” for the Panthers?

I vote Barnidge...

While Rosario may be the most athletic and a more talented receiver, his inability to block limits his “worth” as a TE. While Barnidge may not be as athletic or as great a receiver, he is a much better blocker. So, overall, in regard to the TE position, I have to go with Barnidge being the complete package and having the highest ‘ceiling’.

King, as good a blocker as he is, is definitely the most expendable of the three, in my opinion. Hopefully Barnidge develops into a Rosario/King hybrid.

I vote Jeff King because...

he has the most awkward touch down celebrations.

I tried being reasonable, I didn't like it.

by Davejinxer on Feb 4, 2010 3:57 PM EST reply actions

haha

haha I joke with my friends about that all the time during games. His awkward spike through the legs with his like 6 inch vertical leap =P

Gary Rosario -ftw!

I tried being reasonable, I didn't like it.

Barnidge has the most upside at TE

I don’t really consider Rosario as a TE because he blocks like a girl. I see him as a slot receiver because he does have great hands and can make the tough catches. Rosario should be the possession receiver on 3rd down – and King/Barnidge should be the 2 TE’s. (King is too good of a blocker to get rid of, unless he is replaced by someone who blocks as well or better than he does.)

lol nice shout out at Roasario's blocking skills

better blocking can be learned… most of catching is a natural skill so i went with Rosario with the most potential

Well,

blocking requires a mentality similar to tackling. Every year guys come and go in this league b/c they have physical talent, but they lack the mentality to be successful in the league.

With our offense . . .

King has the most potential simply because he is good at the #1 priority, run blocking.

Neither Rosario or Barnidge can block even close to King’s caliber. Rosario is quicker and has good body control/agility and Barnidge has good straight line speed an high points the pass. If we could just blend them all together into 1 TE, then we would be set.

Quick, call The Emperor, Dr Evil, and Rita Repulsa...

We will figure this out – and we will create the best TE to ever play in the game of football!

(PS. how many people actually remember who the last one is?)

People seem to be pretty split

Half the comments note Barnidge as more athletic and a better blocker and half say Rosario is the same. I don’t know what to think as I don’t get to see most of the games.

As for King, we know he is the most limited athletically, but the best blocker and has good hands. He is also pretty cheap being a 5th round pick I believe it was so there is no reason to get rid of him. I would not be opposed to more PT and looks for the other 2 though.

Barnidge and King

I think we have yet to see Barnidge’s true potential as a receiving threat! We need TEs that can block, and King definitely gets it done.
