CBS Sportline says Carolina could have interest in WR Bryant

Teams interested in receiver Bryant

Wide receiver Antonio Bryant received $9.88 million in 2009 after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers placed the franchise tag on him.

He had a career year in 2008, which resulted in 83 passes for 1,248 yards and seven touchdowns.

Tampa Bay won't be placing the franchise tag on Bryant again this season, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, because the price is way too high for a soon-to-be 29-year-old wideout who spent the better portion of the 2009 season battling a knee injury.

The Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns, Carolina Panthers, Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots could be interested in Bryant. I don't think so....at 29, we need to look for younger talent, IMO.   Panther Dan <!-- extendedTeams interested in receiver Bryant Wide receiver <a class='sbn-auto-link' href='http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/2073/Antonio_Bryant'>Antonio Bryant</a> received $9.88 million in 2009 after the <a class='sbn-auto-link' href='http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/TAM'>Tampa Bay Buccaneers</a> placed the franchise tag on him. Hmm....

Well, with the new free agency rules in an uncapped year, I believe that 28 is just around the youngest FA wideout you’ll find in free agency right now. It’s not necessarily a bad deal if we sign him to a 3 or 4 year contract, and for a contract that doesn’t break the bank either.

If we’re looking for a good wideout to make a serious run at a Super Bowl, I’d love to have him on our team. He’d fit in perfectly on the football field, and I have a feeling that if Matt Moore proves that he has the tools to give him his receptions, a lot of that bad attitude talk will mysteriously go away too.

We need a good second receiver, plain and simple. We don’t run that many 3 wide receiver sets. If we go into this season with Steve Smith on one side and Antonio Bryant on the other, the possibilities for this season are endless. But if we have to sign him at the cost of getting rid of some of our team nucleus like Richard Marshall or Thomas Davis, I wouldn’t want to sign him to the big contract.

But that’s the good thing. I don’t think it’ll cost that much to bring him over here to begin with.

I just don't want a repeat of DJ Hackett

hurt from day one and onyl gives you two or three good games…plus I bet someone signs him for way more he is really worth

True. I don't want a repeat of that either.

But at least with Antonio Bryant, we know that’s he’s been there and done that before. He’s had a 1,000 yard season. He’s had success. With DJ Hackett, we were taking a calculated risk that his injury prone label was only temporary and that he would be able to shed it with Carolina and reach his unfulfilled potential. Instead, he just got hurt again and turned into a big pothole of panzification.

With Bryant, he’ll immediately be thrust into a second receiver position and play 100% of the snaps. He’ll have Matt Moore, who won’t be forcing the ball to Steve Smith all the time. It puts him in more of a position to succeed, something he didn’t have a lot of while he was in Tampa Bay. My guess is that he takes advantage of that, if anything then just to show the people in Tampa Bay that he has the tools to get the job done.

I wouldn’t overpay to get him here of course, but the good of acquiring him outweighs the bad. We know we’ll have him playing 100% in at least two games when we play Tampa Bay. :3

Moore threw to Smith just as often as Delhomme did.

Please stop with this “won’t be forcing the ball to Smith” crap.

Moore can actually hit him.

Jake just throws the ball at him whether he’s open or not. Hence his interceptions.

Also, in one of the 3 games started, Matt Moore had 9 players that had at least one reception. Nine.

Oh, ok...

So Smith was magically more open for Moore. Got it. And I’m not sure the fact that the Panthers were letting players like Sutton, Goodson, and Fiammetta actually play on offense and run routes when the season was over says Moore is somehow a great QB.

No

Moore used other people so Smith couldn’t always be triple covered.

DELHOMME USED OTHER PEOPLE JUST AS MUCH!

Which part of that is so hard to understand, exactly?

Used to

Whenever he got in trouble got sacked threw a pick he would just sling it to smitty which isn’t a bad thing it’s just he always did it.

No, that's not true.

Delhomme and Moore’s pass distributions were almost identical…this season.

Considering this argument is so old..

Can we simply agree that, regardless of specifics, the Carolina offense (or team as a whole) performed better down the stretch (including the time Moore was under center) than they had the first half of the season? Rather that was Moore coming in, the offense playing better, or the defense playing better, in the end, we achieved more W’s at the end of our season. Whatever was helping us to those wins, lets hope continues into next year.

by D-Ranged1 on Mar 1, 2010 2:28 PM EST up reply actions

Sure.

I’m not arguing. I’m stating a fact. I’m tired of people misrepresenting facts as they relate to Delhomme and Moore’s relative distribution of the ball to secondary receivers.

Just so everyone can be on the same page here.

Delhomme completed 178 passes.
Matt Moore completed 85 passes.

46 of Delhomme’s completions went to Steve Smith, and 132 went to other receivers. This means 34.8% of Delhomme’s completed passes were to Steve Smith.

19 of Matt Moore’s completions went to Steve Smith, and 66 went to other receivers. This means 22% of Moore’s completed passes went to Steve Smith.

If you want to paw through game logs to check every target be my guest, because I sure don’t.

Empirically though, I bet Delhomme targeted Smith more than Moore.

Already did.

I went ahead and pulled and polled the gamelogs myself.

Delhomme attempted 321 passes. 89 to Steve Smith (27.7%)
Matt Moore attempted 138 passes. 37 to Steve Smith (26.8%)

If each were given 500 attempts during the 2009 season:
- Delhomme would throw to Smith 139 times
- Matt Moore would throw to Smith 134 times

there you guys go again

pick any stat, any stat in the world, and you get the same old argument from Procto. He loves Jake, and will never give in that Moore outplayed Jake. Will someone please find me a stat, anywhere, of how Jake outperformed Moore last year. Procto will never admit it, although he is quick to point out that Jake had a higher QB rating than Jamarcus Russell. So let’s just crown his ass and move on.

The thing with Hackett was

that he was fairly cheap, so when he busted it didn’t hurt us.

I feel like getting Antonio Bryant is like putting a bandaid on a broken arm.

Sooner or later this team is going to have to find a young WR to groom to fill the 2nd spot, and we’re fast approaching where we’ll need to start thinking about Smitty’s retirement. It takes years to find a guy who could fill that void.

Bryant’s about to turn 29 in less than a week, just a year younger than Steve Smith.

I like Bryant as the #3 if Moose doesn’t come back, but I don’t like pinning the #2 spot on him.

No way Bryant would ever accept being just a slot guy.

Sign Byrant plz.

he could be a great recievevr opposite Smitty and draft Gilyard with our second round pick. Other opts could be Jacoby Ford in latter rounds as well as A. Robets for a speedster/slot reciever.

WR Depth Chart w/Byrant:

1- Smitty
2- A. Byrant
3- M. Gilyard
4- D. Jarrett
5- K. Moore
6- D. Jackson or C. Martin or UDFA from NFL Draft

Cannot tell me that isn’t a Super Bowl caliber starting WR core depth chart.
