Panther Paw Prints - No Peppers Edition

So hopefully we can stop talking about Julius Peppers this week and move on to the players that want to be on the team. Let's start with another Panther drafte pick who would love nothing more than a long-term contract from the team. The problem is LB Thomas Davis is one of the players stuck in the sudden RFA zone who due to the lack of a CBA is not a UFA, which was news to Davis until recently:

Labor unrest restricts NFL free agents - CharlotteObserver.com
"That’s when reality set in," Davis said. "We hadn’t talked about it much before, I didn’t have my agent blowing them up with phone calls. "Now I’m in a spot where I’d love to have some kind of stability that comes with that long-term deal, love to know that they want me here. But unfortunately I can’t know that right now."

The more important revalation from yesterday's press conference by Marty Hurney is that the QB position will be a wide open competition in training camp:

Hurney: Too early to decide on starting QB - CharlotteObserver.com
"It's the end of February, and I think it's way too early to answer that, obviously," Hurney said. "Everybody knows how we feel about Jake. Matt came in and played very well, at the end of the year, and we just go through the process and see what happens."

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt on this one for now...

Star-divide

The Players Union is now stating their position on the CBA: extend the current deal another season to give more time.

NFLPA executive director Smith says 2010 season likely uncapped
"It is our view that obtaining an extension to the CBA prior to the uncapped year is in the best interest of both the players and the owners," Smith wrote. "However, the terms of any CBA extension must allow for players to get their fair share of NFL revenues while at the same time address the owner's issues in such a way as to allow them to continue to grow the game of football."

All I know if we lose even part of season because a ton of rich guys can't agree on how rich each of them are going to be I'm not going to be a happy camper...moving on the Scouting Combine here is one guy I'm anxious to see:

Fringe first-rounders have shot to assert themselves at combine
Dexter McCluster, WR/RB, Mississippi Interested in one of the most dangerous players in the draft and not worried about size? McCluster is your man. Some draft grading systems will prevent him from being a top 50 player simply because he checks in at 5-foot-8 and 165 pounds. But the college production, Senior Bowl practices and his combine testing should eliminate all fears. He is speed training with Olympian Michael Johnson and should really run and jump in Indianapolis. McCluster has to get his shoulder checked out from an old injury, which shouldn't be a problem. Some GM looking for the next Percy Harvin, Jeremy Maclin or DeSean Jackson is going to ignore the size and take this kid.

Of course we won't get an idea of his toughness from the combine. Our own James from down under previews the combine from the Panthers perspective over at his new digs and I thought he makes a few good points about our DT position:

The combine starts today. What positions should you be looking at? | Real Bits of Panthers
DT is a position with a log jam of players but not a lot of upside. Given that this is a Ron Meeks defense look at the smaller DTs in the draft. Though the Panthers need a big, bruising NT it’s been abundantly clear that Meeks’ philosophy is that you can fill the line with speed and put alot of burden on your LBs. This worked for the most part in Indianapolis and I expect it will continue to work in Carolina.

I can't say I'm exactly thrilled with Thomas Davis' phrasing
I’d love to have some kind of stability that comes with that long-term deal, love to know that they want me here.

I really hope Julius Peppers syndrome isn’t seeping through players who aren’t under contract. However, it does seem like he’s more realistic about it than Peppers. I know Davis wants a long term deal, and I’m sure the Panthers want him long term… but the crux of the argument hasn’t changed. Without knowing if there’s going to be a 2011 season, let alone knowing what the salary cap will look like it’s incredibly risky to sign players long term right now.

This is aside from the fact Davis is coming off a knee injury, and it would be foolish of the Panthers to sign him long term sight unseen if he can return to the same level of production.

I think Davis understands the situation...

As long as Carey isn’t his agent (who is his agent, btw?) we shouldn’t have too much of an uproar from him.

As James pointed out, Davis has to understand that there may not even be football in 2011, and he is coming off an ACL injury – those are two very important pieces to the puzzle.

I think both sides want a long term deal, and I hope that everything works out so that deal is realized b/c as a fan I enjoy watching Davis play.

Davis is represented by France Athlete Management Enterprises out of Atlanta.

The lead representative there is Todd Eric France. The agency also represents:

Ronnie Brown
Takeo Spikes

The problem is the guys who ARE getting extensions, though.

Eugene Amato of the Titans just got quite a nice deal.

Pep can go..

But, man, if they let Davis slip through our fingers, I’ll be speechless.

I'm right there with you.

We can always poke fun at Carey and Julius Peppers. Management has an instance excuse for that. But if we don’t sign Thomas Davis, our leading tackler BY FAR before he went down to injury, I’ll go nuts.

I can understand that the Panthers don’t want to spend much money. Richardson wants to set a good example and all of that. But there is a difference between being wise with your money and just plain stingy.

Heh!

I agree.

Who’s that new person on the face of the penny? Why look! It’s John Fox! =D

"Everybody knows how we feel about Jake."

That’s a phrase that scares me. The last thing I remember from the coaching staff was the constant praise of Jake Delhomme that he was the unquestioned leader of this team. Cmon guys, at least recognize that Jake didn’t play well prior to Matt Moore coming in and impressing the hell out of everyone. I would hate for our crown prince to come into the regular season and be denied the job because of opinion rather than production.

“I think Jake Delhomme should be starting because he’s the leader of this team. The players look up to him and respect him. ect. ect.”

I can see it happening. It makes me nervous and antsy. Players like Sherrod Martin, James Anderson, Dan Conner, and Everette Brown ((in my opinion)) have been held back from a starting job because of silly things like veteranship and blind loyalty. I would be shocked if John Fox performed the same feat at the most important position of all.

Glad I'm not the only one..

Hopefully (assuming both players play as they did last year, being that’s the most recent performances we have to go by) that won’t last through pre-season.

Then you should hope Moore performs well in camp and the preseason for the first time in his career.

Martin wasn't as good a fit for the new scheme as Godfrey

Plus Fox believes you should never lose your job due to injury, but if you are injured and your backup performs well he’ll reevaluate. Martin got much more time after Godfrey’s injury and subsequent return.

And Brown, while he did play well for a rookie, didn’t show enough strength vs the run, or even consistent pass rush to warrant starting. I would love to see Brown starting, but I’m realistic about the impact he had this year, I’m not as high on him as most.

My point is a lot of this veteran loyalty is overblown, Fox is loyal, but he is smart. He didn’t go back to Rodney Peete.

Brown

too many people are looking at 2.5 sacks and being down on Brown. The fact of the matter is he had some like 30 QB pressures which is exceptional. Its not all about getting sacks.

by SouthernPanther on Feb 26, 2010 1:56 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah and it looked like he could have gotten another 4 or 5 sacks

But someone narrowly beat him to the QB. Could have gotten a few more half sacks, but they gave Pep full sacks because he is the recognizable veteran. Imagine if he is given more opportunities.

Do or do not. There is no try.

by ERL on Feb 26, 2010 2:27 PM EST up reply actions

That's not how it works.

If the guys get there at the same time, they split the sack.

That is how its supposed to work

I’m watching film. This happened more than once. In past seasons this happened several times to Brayton…but he is a team guy so he doesn’t care.

Do or do not. There is no try.

by ERL on Mar 2, 2010 2:50 PM EST up reply actions

I know he was good against the pass

I’m concerned about his ability against the run, that will directly correlate with the amount of snaps they give him.

Truth.

That’s why guys like Brayton and Diggs are fixtures in the lineup despite their supposed athletic limitations.

Uhh...he did?

That’s almost two a game. And at some point, if you’re around the QB that much, you just have to put them down.

by MichaelProcton on Mar 1, 2010 2:05 PM EST up reply actions

yeah, but

who in their right mind would’ve gone back to Rodney Peete? Seems like similar situation, but not really. Peete was definitely at the end of his career. With Jake, I don’t believe anyone is thinking he’s at that point. If we go back to weeks on end of “Jake gives us the best opportunity to win”, I’ll be seriously disappointed. Open competition is fine, as long as Jake is trying to unseat Matt, not the other way around.

by toonman on Feb 26, 2010 4:44 PM EST up reply actions

Why does anybody have to be unseating anybody?

If it’s an open competition, there doesn’t need to be a leader.

by MichaelProcton on Mar 1, 2010 2:10 PM EST up reply actions

I think we can read between the lines

Delhomme will have natural advantages in this “competition.” It is human nature and neater in the mind (and neater when assigning who gets which snaps) to create a “leader”—even if there is not one. This will start as Delhomme, assuming Fox has the final say.

Do or do not. There is no try.

by ERL on Mar 2, 2010 2:53 PM EST up reply actions

The one who starts the first series of the first preseason game, with the OL starters, will be the "leader" in that "competition."

Apparently, from the thus-far lack of a tender offer/new contract for Moore, his performance in the last 5 games of the 2009 season have nothing to do with selecting our starting QB for next season. He may as well have played mediocre, “protect the football” style ball, and be in the same position he’s in now — in “competition” for something that should be rightfully his to hang onto or lose through bad play.

Jake on the other hand, through the divine intervention of his hand injury, now gets a “Get out of Jail Free Card” and his ineptness is erased from the books of coaches and a lot of Panther fans alike.

When exactly did anybody on the Panthers suggest he played well last year?

Martin is the only player on your list who isn’t behind an established veteran who also played well last year.

Haha.

There’s incredible irony in that.

Tomlison can get on stage and cry like a baby and everyone loves him.

Julius Peppers can act like a baby all the time and nobody loves him.

But jokes aside.

I’ll bet that Tomlison is the best power/3rd down back in all of free agency right now.

He’s lost the speed part of his game. So what? Here’s what was wrong with the entire situation with the Chargers. They kept trying to make Tomlison the main guy even though he’s obviously lost that elite speed. It’s not going to work. His skill set is changing, and you have to adjust the gameplan to go with it. I’ll bet you anything that Mike Shanahan wouldn’t have come anywhere near doing that with him. ((I’ll bet he’s a good prospect to go to the Redskins by the way. Clinton Portis and Ladanian Tomlison as the best old fart RB tandem in the NFL.))

They should have had Darren Spoles penciled in as the starter, and they should have brought Tomlison in during 3rd and short situations as well as goal line situations. Of course it’s easy to say that on hindsight, but they went through most of the season with him as starter when it obviously wasn’t working out. Hopefully the next team that signs him will sign him because they like his skillset, and not because they’re going to pretend that he’s the player he once was, which he’s not.

He isn't really a power back, either.

He basically has short-area quickness and excellent receiving skills. If he were on my team next year, my goal would be to get him the ball, as you said, on third downs, in the flats and on screens. He reads blocks very well still. Look for him to be a 40-50 catch, 100-150 carry type of guy next season in a committee backfield.

Do or do not. There is no try.

by ERL on Feb 25, 2010 2:02 PM EST up reply actions

Hard to give Sproles that big a workload, though.

The guy is tiny, and the Chargers obviously don’t believe he’s an every-down back, or else they would have tried to hold on to him.
