Around SBN: NFL Roundtable: Which Draft Pick Is Most Likely To Bust?

WRs in the upcoming draft

Here are some top WRs in the upcoming draft:

Dez Bryant
Golden Tate
Arrelious Benn
Demaryius Thomas
Mardy Gilyard

Now, I've seen mock drafts that have us take Mardy Gilyard with our 2nd round pick. Will most of the top WRs be taken off the board in the 1st round? What about Dexter McCluster? Would it be too early to grab him with the 2nd round pick? What are your thoughts on the WRs on this years draft?

I was impressed with Gilyard from the Senior Bowl

I would take him over D Thomas (and that is saying something since I’m a GT homer)

I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com

I've also seen...

Jeremy Williams (Tulane) as our pick in the second on a mock. I don’t know anything about him, but I figure I’d throw his name into the discussion too.

I'd take Gilyard

I’d take Gilyard in the 2nd round unless Tate somehow slipped to us. I think McCluster is more of a late 2nd-mid 3rd round pick. I love what I’ve seen from McCluster and Gilyard both, so I like it either way.

I love McCluster

I posted about him during the Senior Bowl. He is a weapon in the mold of Percy Harvin. It would be great if we drafted him but I’m afraid that Jeff Davidson would have no clue how to properly use this guy because Dex can do sooo many things.

He will get picked up in the 3rd round by a team that finished in the top 5 in total offense (they finished there for a reason, ie who they draft), and the rich will get richer. Meanwhile, we will probably take a WR with our 2nd or 3rd pick, and he will be very slow to contribute…I’ve heard this tune before. Furney does not have my confidence when it comes to picking WRs. They have yet to draft one wideout that has become a serviceable NFL starter.

That is why I am in favor of signing a veteran WR to play the slot, ala Ricky Proehl, and we use our early picks for D line help…not because I don’t like any of the receivers available in the draft, but because I’m not confident that they will pick the right one.

Good lord of we get Jordan Shipley I will do a back-flip. He solves so many of our problems. He is the perfect slot receiver, he is a dynamic kick returner, and he is capable of producing in the 2010 season. But again, I’ve seen this movie before, we will pass on Shipley to draft some dude you’ve maybe never heard of and he will dress for 15 games in three seasons and then get cut.

Don’t get me wrong, I think there is a lot that Furney does right, but some of the decisions I just don’t know…

Shipley would be my first choice at wideout to

hes so good. i like alot of wideouts in this draft but shipleys been my favorite wideout in college for a while. hes a great route runner, fast, reliable, dynamic, and like ERL is the next wes welker

by pantherpride on Feb 12, 2010 10:43 PM EST up reply actions

would love to get shipley hes goin to be the next wes welker if not better. but i do think gilliard could produce in his first year just because teams underestimate his speed

by taichong on Feb 12, 2010 4:23 PM EST reply actions

let's go Demaryius Thomas

huge player with freaky good hands, can readjust well, has great speed, and is a great blocker; only issue is route running, which is horrific since he didn’t really practice much with GT’s play calling

his potential is enormous but I don’t know if he’s 2nd round material… if we can trade down/up with our 2nd/3rd to get him i will be very very happy

I've been thinking about this for a while now...there are many great guys, but SHIPLEY is the one I want to take

I believe we will take a WR with our first pick in the draft, no doubt about it.

DEZ BRYANT is one of the top WRs and will most definitely be gone by the second round.

GOLDEN TATE is a fringe 1st/2nd round player, but if he slips at all, I would love for us to take him. He really is a Steve Smith lookalike in terms of speed and being a deep threat, and is a crazy athlete like Smitty who can make wild catches and dazzle for yards after the catch.

I’ve looked at alot of film of ARRELIOUS BENN, and am not very impressed with what I see. Although he is a bigger body Muhsin Muhammad type receiver, he really doesnt wow and make any great catches. Also doesnt play great 1on1, and is known for dropping balls. I think Arrelious Benn will fall very far on draft day, or he will be a bust.

MARDY GILYARD is a fine WR, and there will be a handful of WRs like him who could be great and will be available in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Although he is in a pass first offense, and is the go to guy, he is a great WR and if teams pass on him, they will most likely regret it down the road. Is reminiscint of Jeremy Maclin, is explosive, makes dazzling catches and moves, and could work out as a great KR/PR, so that is a huge plus. Could add a bit of muscle and weight, and may not be the most physical WR…could be taken earlier than expected though and might not be around for the panthers…

DEMARYIUS THOMAS, I wouldn’t even really consider until the late 3rd earliest, or 4th and 5th round. Thomas has good production but isn;t really a great polished WR and route runner.

There are a # of guys who could go anywhere from the 2nd to 3rd who we probably have a shot at. JEREMY WILLIAMS from Tulane and ANDRE ROBERTS from the Citadel have great production and are rated high, but I really don’t know if they can translate from small schools to the Pros…

DEXTER MCCLUSTER is a DeAngello Williams/Mike Goodson type runner(small, nimble, and fast as hell), but probably isn’t big enough to play RB at the next level and survive the bruisings from going down the middle. That is why most teams will probably think about putting him at WR, but I am not sure that anyone will risk an early pick on such an uncertain guy. Could be used as a Reggie Bush/Mike Goodson type homerun threat though. Wouldn’t be surprised if he isn;t picked up till mid-late 3rd, but is still wildly athletic

JORDAN SHIPLEY however, is a guy who I think will be one of the bests of the class, and might just fall to the Panthers in the 2nd. He is a great slot/possesion type receiver and would be the perfect replacement for Moose, esp since D Jarrett isnt really making it through yet. Shipley has produced well against every team the Horns have played against, and his stock was really strengthened in the Champ game where he did excellent with a backup QB. He is deceptively quick and yes can be compared to Wes Welker, but not just because he is white. If many skip on him, they will regret it, this guy will be an immediate impact on whatever teams he lands on, mark my words!

shipley is almost guaranteed to fall to us by our first pick

but we could probably get him with our 3rd…

but i’d rather get demaryius thomas… route running issues can be learned

by vitzeng on Feb 12, 2010 11:18 PM EST up reply actions

Jordan Shipley would be nice

If the Panthers can fully utilize him to the offense. I thought we were going to involve Goodson as a slot receiver last season.. but maybe Davidson might feel more comfortable with more aggressive passing plays with Moore under center. Panthers could definitely use a security blanket like Shipley

by Shockers on Feb 13, 2010 2:30 AM EST up reply actions

Tate, LaFell, Gilyard, Mcluster, Roberts, Thomas, and Shipley is how my wish list goes

Along with a vet like Avant, Moose, Walter, or Burleson to play slot.

WR in Draft

I like Jacoby Ford. Blazing speed, but a football player, not just a track guy. With Smith and Moose, he would really stretch the field, and from the slot can turn a 5 yd. pass into a touchdown. Will also make the running game better as safeties will have to stay back so Smith and Ford don’t beat them deep. Also, can return punts and kicks.

On McCluster, I think Ole Miss tried him at WR and it did not work out at all.

It looked like he performed well at the Senior Bowl.....

His counterpart Shay Hodge is a little more reliable though.

Draft Gilyard.

He’s a great WR/KR and he has a good head on his shoulders – he’s a perfect fit both personality wise and on the field.
