Desperate times call for desperate measures: It's time for the Carolina Panthers to unleash the flood gates in our running game.
This week is the perfect time for the Panthers to run the ball for a multitude of reasons. First off, Jonathan Stewart has returned from injury, and ran for 98 yards on a game where he only had 12 carries. Our offensive line play has improved, and they've always been stronger blocking for the run then they are for the pass. Mike Goodson has emerged as a decent #2 back and he's had a few games to get his feet wet on the field with two 100 yard games. And to put the icing on the cake, the Seattle Seahawks are coming off a couple of games where they allowed 382 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns
All this points to the Panthers needing to pour it on in the rushing game, where we don't have to worry about Jimmy Clausen throwing the game away. The problem is, will they do it? You can never tell with Mr. ‘I need a sweatband in order to call plays in an air-conditioned room' calling the plays. Will Jimmy Clausen be successful when the Hawks are sending 8 and 9 guys down the field to overload the box and stop the run? Here's another big stat: The Seattle Seahawks have allowed a 100 yard receiver 4 out of their last 5 games, and even then the receiver that missed out was off by two yards. Can Jimmy Clausen get the deep ball to Steve Smith against Seattle's aging and depleted secondary? That's another big key to the game.
This season has been tough for Panther fans everywhere. Hell, it took days for me to recover completely after that missed field goal kick that made us lose against the Browns. However, have faith! This season is not over yet, and we still have two good chances to win a game against the Seahawks this week and the Cardinals at home later on. Also take heart in remembering that it is December, and Fox's Panthers are 20-12 going into the final month of the season. Historically, even when our Panthers have been down in the dumps, this is the time that the Panthers rise to their greatest heights.
And every time you think about not watching the game, remember how long and boring the off-season was. Remember how excited you were for the season to begin. Remember the "WTF?" reaction you had when the Panthers drafted Jimmy Clausen and the excitement you felt when you finally realized had a franchise QB. After all, there is only a month of football to go. Treasure the time with this team you have left. Even bad football is better than no football at all.
Besides, you wouldn't want to miss one of the Panther's greatest triumphs do you? When the Panthers win another game, it's going to be a huge deal! I don't want you to be out of the loop!
Go Panthers. Run the ball. Win the game. Help us rid ourselves of excess alcohol consuming on Sunday.
