Panthers Brayton Fined $15K for Hit Similar to Suspended Jets Coach

I only recently became aware that Brayton' recent fine was related to an event similar to the Jets coach who was suspended. Watch the very incriminating video:

Not much to defend on Brayton's part is there? He's lucky the fine wasn't worse. What do you guys think? Was it a pretty cheap shot or simply incidental?

I'm surprised he didn't get suspended...

However….Alosi’s was criminal because he had been planning it and was prepared for it. I think that guy just jacked his jaw too much to Brayton earlier in the game and he decided he wanted to get a little revenge lol

Brayton should be suspended too...

That was clearly blatant and just as intentional as Sal Alosi’s trip.

Brayton should have to sit out Thursday at Pittsburgh. We need to see more Greg Hardy anyway, and this would just give us more of a reason to play Hardy.

You speak with my thoughts, exactly.

The Jets suspended Alosi, though, not the league (though they might have, had no action been taken internally.)

The Panthers should do the same.

by bigdavis on Dec 20, 2010 11:53 AM EST up reply actions

Totally agree.

I think the Jets did it just to say they took the high road, thus avoiding the league being involved. I don’t see any scenario where the league wouldn’t have suspended him for it.

The Panthers should follow suit and suspend Brayton for one game. Hell, we’re 2-12 anyway, it’s not like his absence is going to kill our season — we’ve done that already.

Why?

The league has already fined him a ton of money. He’s been ‘punished’.

After the crap that players like Martin have gone through this season I wouldn’t be so quick to suspend my own players voluntarily.

You just can't do this

I’m surprised with all the media attention the Alosi trip garnered, that Brayton was not more heavily punished. The league tried to sweep this one under the rug, for some reason…or it was just ignored b/c we are the Panthers….the anti-national media darlings.

Honestly, with what Alosi did, I’m surprised Brayton was not “made an example of,” to quell this sideline tripping epidemic. It happened that way with the helmet to helmet hits…there was a rash of overreaction and ridiculous fines. These sideline trips/elbows were handled much differently, and its curious.

In 2005, Steve Smith became the first player since Washington Redskins' receiver Art Monk in 1984 to lead the NFL in receptions for a team that ran more often than it passed. In Steve Smith we trust.

Makes one wonder...

Had James Harrison (or any other Steeler) done it, would he have been suspended for the rest of the season?

Probably, at the very least suspended for a game or two.

Its a ‘what have you done lately’ league…and Harrison is currently a target.

What’s funny is as a Raider, Brayton was fined $25K for kneeing some dude in the garbage…so he should be considered a “repeat offender” of this type of severe unsportsmanlike conduct.

I think it didn't really surface till later in the week

the Alosi trip was spotted almost immediately after the game

Eh...

This stuff has been going on for as long as football. Not a ton to see here, other than the fact that he got caught. Gunners should know better than to leave the field anyway. :)

by Cyberjag on Dec 20, 2010 11:58 AM EST reply actions

That's one thing I was thinking

How far out of bounds can a gunner go and still be allowed back in the field of play? As far as he wants to I guess. What if a gunner now goes head hunting on the sideline looking for revenge?

If a gunner wants to run out of bounds then are opposing players expected to move out of the way? How do you objectively determine whether it was inadvertent or malicious?

Not only that

It can be an unsportsmanlike penalty if he doesn’t try to get back into the field of play in a “reasonable” amount of time.

by Scrantsj on Dec 20, 2010 3:49 PM EST up reply actions

I think thats where this is more debateable than the Jet's sidelines hit

The jets coach literally stuck his knee into the paint area of the sideline. Brayton was almost a foot off the paint and the guy ran straight into him. The gunners know they are supposed to get back into the field of play if they get forced out, and not by sprinting down the benches. Brayton was probably furious that there wasn’t a yellow flag for the gunner not getting his ass back in play after running 15 yards down the Panther’s bench.

That said, I still think its dirty, but the gunner is also at fault for running down the field when 5 feet OOB

Why were they running out of bounds and still grabbing eachother anyway?

Maybe Brayton was like, “get your freakin hands off my teamie” with the hit. Also how can all these people say how bad the hit was, you cant really even see the hit in this shitty video.

by MrBernz on Dec 20, 2010 12:25 PM EST reply actions

But you can see him purposefully step up from the bench onto the sideline and hit the guy. It was intentional.

EMBARASSING!!!

As if our season wasn’t bad enough, then this dumb@$$ goes and does something like this!! He’s a veteran and should know better, i dont care how bad things are this is uncalled for!! I love the Panthers, and can put up with a terrible season better than I can this crap!!

I really hope Brayton is gone after the season

He’s played awful this whole season. This is the final straw. Especially since he was voted a captain by his teammates. What a bum

I'm pro- Panther 99.99999999% of the time but......

I cannot defend Brayton on this one! His intentions are blatantly obvious…. Not a good look even though it probably happens more than I ever would have suspected considering that two sideline incidents like this happened on the same day!

I guess Brayton had to take the 2-12 frustrations out on someone. lol

Another point of view.

I watched the video several times – not too sure he didn’t see the guy coming deep into the sidelines and simply pushed him to avoid the guy runnng into other people that didn’t see him coming. Why else ???? It’s not like he lowered his shoulder and really “creamed” the guy.

I'm sure players on the sideline are thinking...

“why do I have to get out of the way?” I’m 5 yards out of bounds and this guys running over here because he can’t get past his man?

Cheap shot...

..but frankly, why the heck are players allowed to run out of bounds? That’s just dumb. I’ve never understood that.

by The Duke Dude on Dec 20, 2010 3:02 PM EST reply actions

I would suspend him.

I don’t care if “football’s a physical game,” or that “things like this happen all the time,” etc.

It’s both a game and a business that has rules. The rules are there for a reason. Whether allowing the gunner to run out of bounds is stupid or not, they’re allowed to do it. In any event, I think it’s important to act with integrity and play by the rules. Period. Brayton’s actions fly in the face of that.

That was intentional (the guy ran from behind other people on the sidelines in order to get a cheap shot in), and it angers and embarrasses me as a fan. I’d be just as angry and embarrassed if I were part of the team/organization. The fact that Brayton is a captain who is supposed to lead and act as a good example makes it that much worse.

Whether the team is 2-12 or 14-0, I wouldn’t have a place for that on my team if I had any say in the matter. Yeah, the NFL fined him, but I would want to make sure that I personally sent a message to my players that cheap shots would not be tolerated. I would suspend him for one game for that shot, and then I’d let him spend most (or all) of the next game on the sidelines so that Hardy (a 6th round rookie of all people) could show Brayton how the job’s supposed to be done. It would be a win-win for us – Hardy would get valuable experience, and we’d have a more productive player on the field.

Helpful resource

There’s a new website out for forums like these that might provide good insight or content to compliment these panthers discussions. www.fastnote.com/carolina-panthers

Anyone can post anonymous notes to any individual or organization and you can even use an RSS feed to stream that content to a blog. Hope that’s an interesting and helpful resource for y’all!

You can’t hide from the eye in the sky. These things have gone on forever in football its just today with so many cameras and so much technology everything is visible and everything is on tape. I dont condone the actions just saying this season has seen WAY to many fines.

charity of greedy old men. More of players salary they can take away this year the more those players will want to reach an agreement so they can play next year. Fines after fines then lockout means a empty bank account

OF COURSE it was a cheap shot....

But it was a more manly cheap shot that Alosi’s! Just kidding! No, I don’t condone this behavior, this is absolutely unacceptable from the standpoint of player safety.

….BUT everything else aside… THAT WAS ONE HELL OF A HIT!!! I mean he really laid the smackdown on him!!

by jkp1516 on Dec 20, 2010 5:08 PM EST reply actions

If you look at it

He was at the bench. It would be hard for him to see that they were even running out of bounds from the bench. Looks like he might have been going to the front to see whats happening & maybe blocked the guy from running over him. After all he was at least a couple of yards out of bounds when they hit. What 1 of you, if you thought a guy was about to run over you, wouldnt throw up an arm to ward it off? Im not saying he didnt do it intentionally or that he did. I am not saying he shouldnt be fined for it either. Im just saying, maybe it wasnt his intention when he walked to the front of the crowd, to knock a player down. This video certainly doesnt show it clear and a lot of people are bashing him for it without seeing both sides of the story.

by MrBernz on Dec 20, 2010 10:09 PM EST reply actions

I see what you mean about intent...

However, if you notice, EVERYONE around him was backing away. If he only wanted to watch and didnt really know someone was running out, natural human instinct and behavior would suggest he would have at least stopped when he noticed EVERYONE was backing up.

He clearly walked up to the Owens, and elbowed him in the head.

Hmmmm...

Won’t say that I condone Brayton’s actions, but I do empathize with his added hostility towards the Falcons player. After the way that the entire Falcons team took so much pleasure and every opportunity to whoop and holler and rub it in our teams face, can’t really blame any of them for them for having had enough. It was a totally classless act, but I guess it can be as hard to be classy with a 2-12 record, much the same as it was for the Falcons to show some class with their 12-2 record. Wonder if there might be some retribution in Atlanta?

Take the world as it is, not as it ought to be.

by Cold Steel on Dec 21, 2010 6:28 AM EST reply actions

you also have to remember in real time, from the time he walked fwdtill the play was over was only like 3 seconds

they would be enough reason to think maybe it was a reflex action. Do you think he had time to think “hey im gonna walk up & plow a guy if he runs 5 yards out of bounds” in the time it took him to decide to go to the front ? And it definitely wasnt worse than the Jets coach 1 because the coach was right on the side of the playing field, Brayton was 5 yards off the field.

by MrBernz on Dec 21, 2010 12:12 PM EST reply actions

To be honest I don't really have an opinion on this

probably because I have a sneaking suspicion that there is far more to this than we know. The Panthers probably know the whole story, or most of it at any rate, which is why all we’ve seen is the NFL fine.

One thing we can take from this, however, is that the rules for gunners on punt returns need to be seriously reworked.

by Flowing Willow on Dec 21, 2010 1:55 PM EST reply actions

My opinion is just that everyone needs to stop assuming he planned it.

Maybe he did, but it seems like it all happened too fast for it to be like, he was by the bench, & knew they would be 5 yards out of bounds, close enough for him to hit the guy, so he decided to do it all in the seconds the entire play was run.

by MrBernz on Dec 21, 2010 3:10 PM EST up reply actions

Brayton hasn’t practiced today. I doubt it’s an injury. IMO, Foxy will sit him this game. WOO HARDY!
