Let me start off by saying that I absolutely love DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart as a tandem, but with the play I saw from Mike Goodson in the past two games it seems as if we found ourselves another starting caliber running back. The problem is....three's a crowd in the backfield. Truly, the league has become a passing league and keeping three very good backs with only one football to share is just not smart. I can agree to those who say you can never have to many good running backs as they have a high risk of injuries. As we have seen this year, we have had to go to our 3rd and 4th string Running Backs quite often. However, I don't foresee us been this unlucky with injuries two years in a row. Here is the analysis of this offseason for our three running backs.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DeAngelo Williams is set to be a free agent this coming summer. I really don't want to see us let another player just walk away for nothing in return. It is a no brainer that we should resign him, at the very least a sign and trade to receive some compensation. A proven back in the NFL should be worth at the very least a 2nd round pick. With this coming draft being relatively weak in Running Backs (can you name a 1st round RB prospect not named Mark Ingram?), we should be able to snatch a 1st round pick from a team desperate for a RB with him.
Jonathan Stewart still has two more years left on his 5yrs/14mil rookie contract. I love J-Stew's downhill running bruiser mentality but he has been bugged by injuries his entire career going back to his college days with the Oregon Ducks. I really would like for us to keep Stewart here as he is the only power back on this team.
Mike Goodson will also have two more years left on his 4yrs/2.2mil rookie contract. This is the guy that has put together back to back 100 yard games that neither Williams or Stewart were able to do this season. While it may be too early to jump on Goodson's bandwagon, if he shows the ability to be a consistent back game in and game out we cannot ignore his abilities.
I would personally like for us to do a sign and trade with DeAngelo Williams for a pick as he will provide the highest return for us. Then use the acquired pick(s) to address another position of need (WR or DT). Next season, start Jonathan Stewart and have him share loads with Mike Goodson as a change of pace back. Also, we can't forget about resigning Ryan Kalil and Thomas Davis as well.
Keep in mind that all this speculation is IF Mike Goodson continues to play well. If not, then it is a no-brainer that we re-sign Williams and keep him here the rest of his career.
