Panthers place DeAngelo Williams on IR
Adam Schefter reports on his Twitter page:
"Panthers strongly considering placing RB DeAngelo Williams on IR, as early as today. Strained arch might be too much to overcome this year."
UPDATE: Darin Gantt has reported that DeAngelo has indeed been placed on IR. I have edited the title to reflect this (JD)

The conspiracy theorists could take this two ways....
“They are moving on, intending to let DWill walk after the season.” OR
“They want him to heal up completely for next season.”
I say the man is just hurt, ain’t gonna help the rest of the year, team needs depth in other areas…can’t hold his roster spot.
In 2005, Steve Smith became the first player since Washington Redskins' receiver Art Monk in 1984 to lead the NFL in receptions for a team that ran more often than it passed. In Steve Smith we trust.
I'll take option 2 for $1000 Alex.
This tells me that they want him back for next year. Why would they worry about his long-term health if they’re going to let him go to another team?

They wouldn't
I guess the other side of conspiracy #1 is: So they can get a longer look at their future RBs, but its all rubbish.
Glad to see this happen, actually. Another reason to believe that DeAngelo is still, figuratively, a young RB.

I think we know what we have in all 3 of our top running backs
Probably can add Sutton to that. I think of all the positions on our team, we know where we stand at RB, LB, and DBs and that is about it.

The Jeff Otah school of injury:
Arthroscopic injury? That’s a year.
Strained arch? That’s 9 weeks.
In all seriousness though they’re likely shutting him down with the intent to re-sign. Is it really worth having this linger into 2011?

yep. no sense wasting him in a lost season.
Anybody with a fairly serious injury, put em on IR and let the scrubs fight the battles.

not to mention...
if they go on IR… Insurance pays their salary correct?

No problem with this. Any panther that gets a half way serious injury from here on out will more then likely be sat down. We playing for draft picks and experience from here on out

I think he will be brought back
We didn’t cut all those veteran salaries for nothing! I think Double Trouble will get a chance to redeem themselves in a Panthers uniform next year…unless Goodson completely steals the spotlight during the remainder of this season. Goodson is, by the way, one of the few reasons I’m still looking forward to watch the Panthers play every Sunday.
Thank you, San Francisco!
Nooooo! This helps with the contract situation though
It might cause some other teams to not be so zealous in going after him
Interesting take
Do they perhaps exaggerate the injury putting him on IR to scare other suitors a bit?
Hmmmm....
…that seems kinda cold to me. But this is a business. I would think if that’s the case, we’d hear from Williams talk about how it’s not that bad, he could’ve played if he really needed to, etc.

I'm tired of this crap.
Would have been nice to give the fans a little warning beforehand that he wasn’t doing too god. Not just that he’s ‘day-to-day’
Man, I hope we get a better coach next year.

Crap's gotten old...
I hope we at least have a coach that can carry on a conversation without the same smartazz answers.
Mr. Thunderstruck!
Mr. Thunderstruck!……. Has anyone see Mr. Thunderstruck?! Oh, there you are! It’s your time to shine, it’s your time to shine. Good-luck, you’re going to need it this week. I’m glad he was able to build his confidence against Tampa because Baltimore is going to rip every bit of that away. Lets see his willpower.
The Carolina Panthers are the best team in the NFL, except on Sundays.
CYA
How much of this is because D-Will is really hurt, and how much is John Fox protecting his legacy for the HC interviews next year?
“Well, Mr. Jones, we were 1-15 because I was forced to play Rookies, and everyone was on IR.”
If it made sense for him to stay on the active roster he would have

The third darker option
I’m going full on wost case scenario here, by placing him on IR maybe(read: utter speculation) the Panthers get out of paying him part of his salary. I mean why not after the roster purge this offseason and their refusal to bring in some of the better name free agent WRs who signed for decent, but not Larry Fitzgerald, money. It simply would not surprise me to find out that Jerry saved a 100 grand by moving him to IR.
This situation just really really irritates me this whole “Keep the payroll low so I don’t lose money while I screw the fans out of the value of their PLSs, merchandise purchases, and time so I don’t lose money when I lock the players out to earn me 5-15% more from this team” (Jerry tends to ramble when I’m mad). I can understand starting Matt Moore this season (how many of us didn’t know this was the right decision in december), but not bringing in a Vet to help these guys to develop? When your vaulted O-Line couldn’t hold a pee-wee defense and you do nothing about the prolonged absence of your RT.
I am sick to death of trying to be optimistic i now assume the worst in an organization I once trusted. Its not even about losing I can handle that but it just seems like Jerry is intentionally trying to make this team suck. I am…….I should just delete this…….damn here’s to sunday and the hope we stun the ravens

I could be wrong...
But I think if a player starts the season on the 53 then you have to pay him for all 16 games. Could definitely be wrong though…
I don’t see any reason to be upset over this. Its not like we can make the playoffs or anything… so Goodson gets more reps…AWESOME! I really want to see this. JStew/MGoods combo should be fun to watch throught the rest of the year.

I think the only way you can get out of paying a player is if he's suspended.
Otherwise, you have to pay the players for all 16 games.
Even if you could get away with cutting players without pay, you certainly can’t use IR as a way to do it, because of injury settlements, etc.

Umm...DeAngelo Williams! How dare you look at me cross-eyed like that!
Suspension! Mwhahahaha!
Appealing the league won’t work! I gave Roger Goodell donuts this morning.

I believe Insurance pays their salary if they go on IR
Teams take out policies on their players which pays them in the event of season ending injury. JR certainly likes the sound of that right now. (the money part)

Didnt they give us the reason they put him on ir?
They said he will take a few more weeks to heal. That they placed him there to free up a roster spot that they really need freed up. The way injuries are going they need all the healthy players they can get. I am not buying into this conspiracy theory, i say its for the reason they said.
Just playing devil's advocate here...
But you do realize that people lie, right?
They could be over-hyping the injury by putting him on IR when they don’t really need to in order to scare away potential suitors for D-Will in free agency, thus lowering the amount of offers he will get and enabling the Panthers to not spend as much on him as they would have to if he had contract offers from a lot of other teams.
I’m not accusing them of lying about the severity of his injury, but I am saying that it is entirely possible that they are doing it.
