After 18 grueling years, I finally left the delusional hell hole we call Washington, DC (or for you simpsons fans, the "cesspool on the potomac"). In all those years I took great comfort in the Skins continued woes throughout the seasons, and even during our 1-15 season I still somehow managed to be able to make fun of the skins fans, knowing at least that we'd be OK after Seifert was canned, but that they were stuck with Jeff George and Steve Spurrier. However, I'm starting to envy that delusional loyalty that runs rampant through the ranks of the Redskins fan base.
I've only recently (well, last season) become a CSR reader, and I'm already starting to become worried about not only our current fanbase, but the condition of our franchise in general. Having been surrounded not only by redskins fans but having a dad who's a DEVOUT raiders fan, I've come to feel grateful that despite the normal issues most expansion franchises face (not too mention the Saints, Cardinals, Lions, Bills, Browns, Rams, and I'm sure a few others in recent years), we as a franchise have only had to endure TWO double digit losing seasons in 15 years! We've been to three conference championships in that time frame (for comparison, the Lions have won ONE playoff game in over 50 years), a super bowl (which I consider one of if not THE most entertaining SB ever), and despite holding the dubious record for consecutive losses for a few years, have generally been at least COMPETITIVE in all but two seasons (1998 being the other one outside of the 2001 season).
This franchise has experienced more success in less than two decades than the Saints had in over 40 years of existence, and bringing back to my point about the redskins, far more success than they have ever since our inaugural season. But why is it then that we have what amounts to one of the shittiest, most fairweather fan bases in the league? Why is it the Raider nation can be thinking and hoping "super bowl" after posting one of the worst winning percentages in the first decade of the new millenium, but we as a fan base can't even muster up the enthusiasim to predict a WIN on a weekly basis? For a while I thought we were different from our expansion brothers in Jacksonville...I thought that they would end up in another failed LA experiment while our fanbase spread its influence throughout the south, and hopefully further beyond that even. Evidently though, we can't even manage to raise the volume at our own fucking home games! How sad is it that despite 4 years of solid drafting and resisting the irrational free agent fever that has afflicted and destroyed teams like Washington (for every Jarrett, shelton, colbert, and Ellison we've drafted, we get a beason, williams, gamble, otah, stewart, connor, anderson, rosario, MUNNERLYN for christ sake) fans are now yelling "off with their heads!' to our owner and coaching staff (for sure I hate Davidson and I do think Fox needs a change of scenery) but hurney? He's got a much better shooting precentage than 80% of the leagues GM's...and lets not forget about some of the RIDICULOUS siginings/trades Polian made (sean gilbert for TWO first rounders? I was barely 11 at the time and knew that was retarded)! Why is it so wrong that our owner wants to field a team for the future, that will help ensure us a stay of stability in a league that is about to get turned on its head when the salary cap comes down to reasonable levels (and don't for a second think the Players union is winning this pissing contest...its the Owners league, they'll get what they want in the end)? Are we really THAT spoiled of a fan base that we can't go through ONE potential rebuilding year without abandoning the team? If we are, then we don't deserve a team, and some bastard child like LA can yet again unjustly have another NFL team!
But I digress....I tried not too admit it for the longest time; I thought that I wasn't a delusional optimist like my redskin cohorts. However, I've taken pride in my homerism for this team; I love UNC and the Canes, and god bless em the Bobcats might do good things soon, but if I had to choose one team to stay in NC it'd be the one from the best sport out there:Our Panthers. Bitch and moan if you will, but I hope that more delusional fans like myself start emerging from the woodwork for this team, so that when we come back from this inevitable strike with the best team in the NFC, we can rub it in all these other chumps grills (and deliver a swift kick in the dick to any 'aints fans trying to jump ship)!
12-4 starts with the Bears on Sunday!
