With the 5th pick in the 2011 NFL draft, the Carolina Panthers select...
Physically, this guy is a beast. He looks like a LB playing corner. He will be a nice replacement for Marshall.
What do you guys think? I know its a bit early to start draft talk, but talking about this season is depressing.
Who do you like if we have a top 5 or 6 pick?

Depends
If we’re top 3, pick AJ Green. 4th or 5th (since I doubt Green will still be on the board), take Peterson. I’d love to see us take Greg Childs later on, as well.

Prince Amakumara
You’re looking at Revis 2.0, in fact… he could be better

If Green, Peterson, and Dareus are gone
I would take him.

Peterson is the best corner coming out of the 2011 Draft
I would love to see Peterson or Amakumara Drafted. We can use a shut down corner of this caliber.
Although I like Peterson very much...
The Panthers have got to straighten out our punchless offense, before strengthening the already pretty solid defense. So, I think WR is probably the biggest need. Yes, I know we spent 3 draft picks on WRs last year, however to this date, none of them have shown any potential to be the legitimate #2 receiver. Gettis has shown flashes, yes, but only as a contributing #3 or #4 “3rd down” receiver. Additionally, LaFell has been a big disappointment, and it is simply unknown if Armanti will ever be adept at playing WR. So, out of the 3 we picked last year, we still don’t have a complimentary player to Smitty.
Not only do we not have a complimentary player to Smitty, but Smitty is also aging rather quickly and might not have that many good years left, so we need to start finding a replacement for him too. Thus, the Panthers desperately need to get a playmaker at WR.
The prospects in this years draft at WR are VERY good, so getting a talented one shouldn’t be much of a problem.
My favorite is Jon Baldwin from Pitt. He compares favorably to Pitt Alum Larry Fitzgerald. Baldwin is a very tall and fast WR and has an incredible ability to make huge leaps and make the flashy catches. Teammates of his call him simply “the freak” because his althletic ability is unparalleled. His production this year (because of weakness at the O-line and QB) has taken a significant dip, however that is none of his fault. Production from last year was spectacular however, as he brought in over 1100 yds with 57 catches and 8tds. He would be my 1st choice.
However, AJ Green very well could be the next Randy Moss. He’s an absolutely incredible athlete and dominant WR. Don’t know if he really fits our power running scheme, however I think he could be a great WR in any offense. If he’s there, and that’s a big IF (b/c many are already picking AJ Green to be in the top 5 and possibly the 1st pick), then the Panthers have no other choice but to pick him because it’d be too stupid to pass on him.
If the Panthers did not decide to go WR with the 1st pick, I would be happy with Peterson or Amukamara (although I’m not too famiiliar with him). With the depth at the WR pool in this year’s draft, it might even make sense to take someone like Peterson 1st then try to pick up a WR with the early 3rd rnd pick. A couple of guys who have stuck my eye who might be available then are Baldwin (b/c he very well might slide), James Rodgers, Greg Little, and many others..
As for DT, I’m not crazy about Dareus as much as others are, not sure he really is all that dominant, and b/c there are many other great talents i.e. Crick, Austin, Paea, Nevis, etc…also given this depth at DT and our adequate DTs, I’m not so sure I’d go with DT 1st.
Preferences would probably be like this:
1- AJ Green
2- Pat Peterson
3-Jon Baldiwn
4-BPA
I would LOVE Green.
He’s big, fast, and a natural at what he does. Peterson is going to be one heck of a corner, and Dareus is a beast. Should our first round pick end up being later, Michael Floyd would also be good due to his chemistry with Clausen. Kyle Rudolph fits the same bill. Ryan Broyles would also make me very excited, he’s an explosive receiver and return man, similar to Steve Smith.
Honestly..
I don’t know much of these players yet, still a long ways to go. However, generally speaking, I think I’d target Defensive BPA/O-line BPA/Defensive BPA with our first 3 picks (maybe only 2, depending how it looks after that). I’m absolutely not convinced that our offense, with a years worth experience, won’t be explosive. I think we have the tools, we just have to be patient enough for them to develop at multiple positions. We don’t just have a rookie QB, or a rookie receiver we’re throwing in there.. Next week, we’re looking at a rookie QB and all rookie receivers unless Clowney gets the start in his first week. That’s crazy. The fact that we could actually win with rookies at all of these positions is even crazier. Just imagine these team with experience together.
Maybe I’m going against the grain but I’m thinking an experienced offense as-is and an already strong defense bolstered with a high draft pick will be very formidable next year. Carolina Panthers 2011 Super Bowl Sleeper. 2010/2011 will be the new 2002/2003. Except, we’re gonna win this time.
Overall Panthers Draft Grade: A
Some of the names here
A.J.Green/ Julio Jones
Dareus/Stephen Paea/Drake Nevis
Patrick Peterson/Prince Amukamara
Kyle Rudolph
I think these guys are great prospects. Not unlike LaFell or Clausen around the same time last season. So I like them as prospects but I think most of these guys are only likely to have an impact in 2012. I also don’t think we are likely to target some of them as we spent so many picks on skill positions in the 2010 draft.
I am pretty sure that we don’t have a top 10 pick – we are most likely to be picking mid-round like we always do under Fox. I think we will be focusing on improving both lines – the interior of the defensive line and the offensive line as a whole. I would love for us to target an LB like Travis Lewis or even Bruce Carter. As usual, the choice would be dictated by value.
BPA baby.
I like your optimism
But to pick in the middle of the pack, we will need to finish the season 7-9. As bad as we’ve looked in 3 of the 4 games, I’m not sure that is very likely…
CHI…W
SF…W
STL…W
NO…L
TB…W
BAL…L
CLE…W
SEA…W
ATL…L
ARIZ…W
PIT…L
ATL…L
If we beat CHI, SF, STL, TB, CLE, SEA, and ARIZ, then we will be 7-9. I don’t see us winning games against the other 4 teams…NO, BAL, ATL, and PIT.
I think 4-12 or 5-11 is much more likely. If that is the case, then we will almost certainly have the 5th or 6th pick, if not higher.
As far as who to draft, I agree that BPA is the right strategy. The way teams are throwing the ball 60-65% of the time now, it would be prudent to look at drafting a potential shutdown CB like Peterson or Amukamara, IMO.
With the 3 WRs we drafted last offseason, and with Wallace Wright and Trent Guy in the wings, and of course #89, our receiver room might start to get a little crowded if we throw a top 5 guy in there…we have too many young guys that have yet to sort themselves out to add another one.
You could say our OL needs another piece, but I think getting Otah back will make a huge difference, especially in our running game. If there is a bruising guard available early in the third round then maybe you look there. But the OL can wait until at least the 3rd round before being addressed.
The DL appears to be a position of need at this point. I like Hardy and Johnson, but it would be nice if Everette Brown decided to show up once in a while. If he doesn’t start to make plays, then I think you have to take a look at a pass rusher in the 3rd. Norwood might be that guy, but I think he is kind of spinning right now trying to adjust to the NFL. He is not a LB at this level, so I hope they realize that and bring him in on 3rd down (slide Johnson inside) and let him get comfortable rushing the passer.
Derek Landri and Ed Johnson are serviceable, but we could certainly use an upgrade there so that our current DTs can be more rotational guys. Unless there is a Dareus there, you wait until later.
"If you ask Jets' CB Darrelle Revis, there is no one who is harder to cover one-on-one than Steve Smith. That has to mean something coming from last year's runner-up for Defensive Player of the Year."

As far as drafting goes
I think I agree to a large extent. We might not add OL until the 3rd round or later – we might even choose look into FA (what a concept!). I like Amukamara and Peterson and if either them fall to us than I’ll be happy.
As far as the record goes, it is more difficult to predict how the teams go through their ups and downs. I still feel with our core talent and Fox as coach we are good for a mid-round pick . One thing I’m almost certain of – we will beat ATL the last game of the season because they will be resting the starters. I think the way you have projected the rest of the schedule (6-7 wins) is pretty realistic.
But yes, I’m (insanely) optimistic and I think 9-7 is possible.
Really wish we had a second!
