Please pass the Tabasco...
There are probably a hundred (or more) bad things that you could say about me, and you would probably be correct on most of them. Hell, if I asked my wife I'm sure she could pull out an itemized list complete with a table of contents and index for simplified reading. But, one thing that no one can say about me is that I'm not a man of my word.
Because I'm sure that most of you have no idea what the title of this post means, or why I'm writing this, allow me to provide some back story to explain...
Last Sunday, Big Davis made the following statement in a comment on aceofsween's Short Quarterback Poll fanpost:
I won’t change my mind about this, until and unless either Moore gets the starter role again, and throws up another 3 pick day, or Clausen starts, and leads us to TDs and a win. ’til then, Moore is clearly better.
After a few responses to the comment, I chimed in with the following statement:
Looks like you guys will get your chance...
Moore’s starting against the Niners. I hope you remember this conversation if and when Moore sucks out loud, only to be replaced by Clausen again.
(And for the record, I will have some hot sauce ready, because I hope I have to eat these words.)
And, Big Davis had the following response to my comment:
See you back here Monday.
Well, because I am a man of my word: Big Davis, could you please pass the Tabasco?
(For those of you who are wondering, the huge 'gulp' sound that you just heard was me swallowing my pride.)
Whether you're on Team Moore, Team Clausen, Team Pike, Team Armanti, or Team Testeverde, you must admit that Matt Moore played a great game of football against the 49ers.* He reminded me of the Matt Moore that we watched down the stretch last season, when he made us think that we had found the future of the franchise at quarterback. He played like that Matt Moore, and most of all, he avoided the huge WTF moments that plagued him earlier in the season and caused us to wonder why he was even on the team.
* - For the stat junkies, Moore's stats: 28/41, 308 yds, 2 TD, 1 INT, 96.4 Rating
I know it's not saying much, but it was the absolute best quarterback performance we have seen this season from either of the two men who have started under center. Yes, the offensive line played better. Yes, David Gettis turned into a legit #2 -- or, dare I say, a #1 -- receiver and had a monster game. But, Matt Moore looked GOOD on the field yesterday against the 49ers. He looked confident, like he knew he had his mojo back. He led the team up and down the field with poise, and limited the mistakes from the first two games of the season that cost him the starting job. (i.e. - Throwing ill-advised passes that were intercepted. For the record, I still think his lone INT yesterday was due to him being hit as he attempted to throw the ball into the ground to avoid a sack.)
Now, I'm not going to go overboard with excitement just yet, because we're still 1-5 and dead last in the division, and we did just beat the 49ers, a team who just like us only has one win (against the Raiders), but that doesn't change my opinion of Matt Moore's performance. An NFL team is an NFL team, and the 49ers have a pretty good defense (13th best in the league in total yards, 15th best in passing). So, Moore deserves all the credit that is due to him because he certainly earned it on the field, and he definitely caused this Panthers fan to wonder if the plug was pulled on him a little too soon.
If he continues to play this well for the rest of the season, it certainly re-opens the discussion as to whether the Panthers should sign him to a long-term deal and trade Clausen, or if they should let Moore go in free agency and build the franchise around a different quarterback.
The one thing that we can all (hopefully) agree on is that the Panthers played one hell of a football game yesterday, and we should all celebrate the fact that we finally have some stability at the quarterback position, regardless of which man is under center. For the time being, this is Matt Moore's team again, and we should rally behind him and give him the full support that he deserves, because he's earned it after this week's winning performance against the 49ers.
I am man enough to eat my words regarding Moore getting another chance to start, and if you shared the same thoughts as I did this past week, I invite you to do the same, because if Moore keeps playing like he did yesterday, Clausen won't see much action for the rest of the year, and it's not outside the realm of possibility that we never see him play quarterback for the Panthers again.
There's plenty of hot sauce to go around, if you care to join me at the table.

takes a man to stand up to his word
rec’d for that
although i think his pick was just because he was about to be murdered by the defender, and he just threw it hoping the screen would work rather than inaccuracy due to being hit
You could be right re the interception
I’m going off memory so I don’t really know exactly what happened. Big Davis will probably post his play-by-play breakdown from the game like he does every other week, and if he does we will have accurate information based on game film so that we can reach a consensus as to what happened on the play.
One thing’s for sure though: someone needs to tell Moore that he can throw the ball out of bounds instead of throwing it 3 yards in front of him towards the ground.

I’ll take some of that. I didn’t support the move back to Moore and boy did he prove me wrong. We’ll need more solid games than one, and consistency, to prove that we can stick with Moore for the next few years but if he can play something like he did today from here out, Moore may just be the starter we were looking for at the beginning of the season.
We definitely have issues to figure out at QB… Is Moore the answer? If not, is Clausen the answer? If not, do we draft another QB with our first pick next year? Lets hope the rest of this season is enough to figure out that answer.

And I can attest, that’s some hot sauce.
Overall Panthers Draft Grade: A
I was largely in favor of the switch back to Moore as well.
Anyways here are my observations from the game:
1) Matt Moore threw several PERFECT deep balls today that caught receivers in stride
2) I loved seeing Steve go back to return punts again! If we can’t get the ball to our playmaker…let him play STs.
3) Our run defense was atrocious until the 4th quarter when we put the clamps down
4) Pass defense was great. Although a great deal of that can be attributed to some AWFUL accuracy by none other than Mr. David Carr himself.
5) I’m legitimately concerned about our running game. Just awful…
6) DAVID MOTHERF****** GETTIS!!! Nuff Said…
7) Matt Moore showed great poise in the pocket and hung in there even when guys were around him. Just great to see (Take note Jimmy…don’t immediately give up on plays)
8) Learn to throw the ball out of bounds Matt. Learn something from a Jimmy on this one.
9) Was that so hard to change up the play calling Jeff Davidson? Notice how it worked this game
10) Steve Smith in routes going across the middle of the field is unstoppable…even if he did have an atrocious drop
11) I’m causiously optimistic about our future now. Atleast we aren’t the 0-16 Lions. That is a huge relief.
GO PANTHERS!!!

Love #6 — I totally agree, lol.
Moore showed great poise in the pocket. I was impressed with the way he ran the offense. I feel a hell of a lot better about the team than I did in any of the five previous games (and not just because we won, but because the team just looked better with Moore under center).

NFL.com shows Smith with two fumbles..
I only remember one, which one did I miss?

Just throwin' this in the hopper...
3) Anybody notice the Times Square defense we threw at ’em in the last quarter?
(That’s the term I heard for the D-line just milling around aimlessly right up to the snap, to confuse the OL blocking assignments.) The first play we went to it, they had to waste a T.O.
That, and they finally got Brayton off the RDE position they were abusing.

Fear not, lads.

I had made a note of the bargain we had come to, but would never be so crass as to rub noses.
You are an upstanding citizen, and a right guy, and you can start on my team any time.

I'm checking in as someone who said benching Clausen was dumb
Boy was I wrong

I still think benching Clausen was the wrong move for the future of the Carolina Panthers...
But regardless, 2010 will be more fun to watch with Moore under center for the remainder of the year.

Which part do you disagree with? All of it?
So the Panthers will be less fun to watch with Matt Moore and BOO PANTHERS?

Screw next year! He's the man this year.
Last year, he wasn’t good enough for you, because he “had no pressure” on him.
I suppose it’s the same this year, huh?
Well, Clausen can’t TAKE the pressure, so forget him.
Whatever you want to think...
If Moore is a Panther next year I’ll eat my words.
If we don’t make the playoffs and he’s gone these 11 games are a happy but useless distraction.

I'm easily distracted, I guess.
Until we’re mathematically eliminated from the playoffs (and I know that’s close!), I still have hope for this year.
(The Play-by-Play is up – can you do your usual fine editing job for me? Thanks.)
I've got a fanpost in the works on this very topic...
I think it’ll cover both sides of the spectrum here (and where I find myself, which is stuck in the middle).
My opinion is that it was the right call for the present and the future.
The original idea when Clausen was drafted was to let him hold the clipboard and learn the game from the sidelines and practice. I think it has been pretty obvious that Clausen wasn’t ready to jump in with such a young team. Now that Matt Moore seems to have regained his confidence and poise, the pressure to carry the team is removed from the rookie’s shoulders. I like the move. I don’t think it will be permanent. I think Clausen will be the starter next year or the year after (in the event of a lockout). I’m just glad to see the team play well finally. Go Panthers! 11-5, BABY!!!!
Let's go Panthers, 2010 is our year!

It's essentially a Rivers-Brees situation
That’s honestly the best we can hope for. And in that situation, I still think you turn it over to your young guy for several reasons.
In other news....
Went to the Saints forums just to add to the great day… They were calling to bench Drew brees for Chase Daniel! LOL
seriously?
chase daniel? unbelievable.

The Browns should seriously consider putting their punter in at QB
Did you guys see that long-ass run he had on a fake punt? He looked like he was shot out of a cannon. The line spread apart like he was Moses on the Red Sea, and he had a straight line with no one in front of him for at least 50 yards.
Two things:
1.) Who in the hell has the balls to run a fake punt on your own 10-ish yard line? Insane.
2.) How can 11 guys not tackle the freaking punter?
"The truth will set you free. But not until it is finished with you." ~ David Foster Wallace
I think the insanity of the call was why the punter had such a huge running lane.
I watched that play several times over. It was the perfect call; every last Saint on the line was 100% tuned into blocking their assignment for the punt return. Hodges could have moonwalked, and would have at least still gained enough for the first down. Making the Saints’ punt returner whiff on the tackle attempt was icing on the cake.
Just a great, gutsy, perfectly timed call. Ironically, the last play that completely blew me away like that was at the start of this year’s Super Bowl 3rd quarter, when New Orleans nailed the onsides kick.
Meet the new quarterback. Same as the old quarterback. Go get 'em, Matty Twice!
Moore's interception...
according to his post game interview he was trying to make a play to Stewart and kinda panicked. Nice to see he could recover from the mistake.
As far as the future….at least it looks brighter at WR.
Though I didn't predict Moore to have such a good game
on the radio show I said I was okay with the switch and that Moore gives us the better chance to win. But 300 yds, 2 TDs, 1 INT…more than I could have expected easily
This is what i expected from Moore from the start. Now i just hope he can continue to do it.
The OL really let the team down against NY. Moore got banged up hard in that first game and probably should have not played in the 2nd. (Though if he had not been benched mid game vs TB he may have had a 4th quarter like yesterday’s….)
At this point in Moore’s career, those two horrible starts against NY & TB are anomalies, and performances like yesterday are the norm.
Here’s to a level of consistency from Matt Moore from here on out!
just an average game
last season, moore had a QB rating of 98. he’s a 60% passer who gets more scores than turnovers, and plays smart football. he’s a top 10 QB in this league if he continues to have average Moore games.
of course, i have no idea what happened to him earlier this year. he just sucked backed in september.
Re MM's 2010 QB Rating...
Per NFL.com and ESPN.com: 57.5

Gotta go, boys. The Play-by-Play will take a few hours.
If I posted an update of the Top 10 Plays (that I did after week 3), almost all of them would be supplanted by yesterday’s heroics.
One last note before I shutter the windows, and recluse myself:
I was surprised that Darin Gantt (the old schoolmarm that she is) only gave out a C grade to Special Teams yesterday. What the Hey! 6 KOs by Lloyd in the EZ, 4 of them TBs? 3 for 3 by Kasay, including a 55 yarder? We give up a total of 71 yds on 5 PR and KRs? We gain a total of 128 yds on same? Is he grading on some kind of New Math curve?? That was an A- to my eye, only to have been bettered by a TD runback.

Sorry guys
But I must take this time to throw out a “I told you so”. I’ve thought Moore should have had the reigns since he came in last year and suddenly our passing game came back to life down the stretch. I was pulling for him all summer to be the starter even after we drafted Clausen, and I was completely outraged when they pulled him after a game and a half. I just want to say it’s nice to see him get the props he deserves.

Heres your optimist
We are only 2.5 games outta the wildcard with 10 games to play! Plus, we are ahead of the Cowboys!!!!!!!
Here's your realist
There are 9 teams that are 2.5 games or more ahead of us in that play off race. With 4 of those going to division winners, 5 are seeking the same play off spot.
Sorry, but that is the way it is.
Haha..
Rain on the mans parade for no reason. Does his optimism really irritate you that badly?

And
We are only 3 games out of the division, with 2 head to head with ATL, and one more each with the Bucs and Aints. Not too much of a stretch. The Panthers are my Santa Claus. You will not make me believe the playoffs don’t exist for us until we are mathematically eliminated. I will post an official this is who we need to lose this week thread just to make you happy. I'm with you all the way, sinceday1
However, there is a rather large and vocal constituency on CSR that gave up on this season after week 2 basically. (See the downers that are still in favor of starting Clausen after last week’s game & those trying to poo-poo your optimism.)
It really is not that big of stretch, what you’re saying. Despite what some dummies on here will argue, our schedule is actually pretty favorable and our divisional situation not nearly as dire as the “realists” won’t to claim.
Basically, there are some members of “Team Clausen” that WANT this season to be trashed so they can validate their wrong headed desires to have the rookie QB in rather than Moore. And while this post was started by someone man enough to admit when he was wrong, some of the more stubborn/vain members can’t give it up yet.
And if you’re serving in Afganistan personally, i salute you and wish you a safe and speedy remaining 23 days!
Count me in........
with those who applaud your optimistic outlook (and service!)
With only 5 losses in the books, The Panthers are still in control of their destiny.
BW, pass the hot sauce here as well.
I’m a little late to this party, but I have still have words to eat. Here’s to Moore having as successful a close to the year as he did last season. :guzzles hot sauce:
Speaking of, any hot sauce Junkies on CSR?
Whats the hottest sauce you’ve eaten?

1.5 Million Scoville Units.
We keep two “hot” sauces where I work that aren’t on the menu, just for the guys that come in looking for something hot. The hotter one is called “The Hottest Sauce in the Universe” (pictured above). The most of it I’ve dared to try is one single drop (one drop, like the size of a rain drop) mixed with 4 ounces of regular hot sauce and poured inside of a calzone. The result was a ton of water chugging while feeling like my gums were burning away from my teeth before my mouth eventually went numb. It took me two days but the (small) calzone was so damn good I had to eat it all.
Overall Panthers Draft Grade: A
We make our own hot sauce for our "gameday wings"
Its actually a combo of Tropical Pepper XXXX Habanero Sauce, Dinosaur Habanero Sauce, Sweet Baby Rays Honey Barbecue sauce combined with crushed red pepper and our own home grown diced Habanero peppers. The key is to overload it with the diced Habaneros including an abundance of seeds and to microwave the sauce for about 30 seconds.
We grill the wings (painting a little bit of Sweet Baby Rays while grilling), put them in a big bowl and then add the sauce and then stir them all up with a big spoon. Killer stuff and the Beer just makes it Hotter!
I have had one drop of this once... and honestly it could be the most pain I have ever experienced

To be clear though this stuff is insanity. One crystal will take roughly 2 quarts of liquid and make it habenero hot.
He mixes one crystal (I think like 16 come in a bottle) with 1 pt of vinegar and purees with some red bell peppers for flavor.

And for food comparison...
The Habanero pepper maxes out around 600,000 Scoville units, depending on the variety of pepper, and it’s one of the hottest peppers that most people have heard of.
The Naga Jolokia (ghost chili) pepper maxes out around 1.1M Scoville units — and it’s the hottest pepper currently grown.

Fun fact...
In large quantities, capsaicin can cause death.39 Symptoms of overdose include difficulty breathing, blue skin, and convulsions. The large amount needed to kill an adult human and the low concentration of capsaicin in chilies make the risk of accidental poisoning by chili consumption negligible.
Random note but...
Was anyone aware that the Carolinas are home to two of the hottest peppers in the world?
The Carolina Cayenne Pepper comes in at between 100,000 and 200,000 SHUs putting it at 25 times hotter than a jalapeño while the slightly milder Charleston Hot Pepper (also a breed of cayenne peppers) ranges between 70,000 and 100,000 SHUs, only about 14 times hotter.
