Thank god

This change to me is 10 times more important than the QB change.

Bernadeau has been beyond terrible for all of 2010…

Praise the Lord!

They’re actually trying to win a game.

Schwartz has been an absolutely easy mark at RT, but he’s actually a fairly decent RG. Whether Williams can be better than he at RT is yet to be determined, but I doubt he can be worse.

by bigdavis on Oct 21, 2010 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Personally, I still would have liked

Gross/Williams/Kalil/Schwartz/Wharton

It’s not like Wharton will forget how to play LG while filling in a RT for a while. I’ve just always been told that the priority of OL (not including center) for a run first team is:

1. LT
2. RT
3. RG
4. LG

So why make your second and third most important positions your weakest players?

I agree on Schwartz, I think he is a very effective RG asked to play outside his ability.

by James Dator on Oct 21, 2010 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

IDK... I'd say that's a good idea if Wharton was 100%, but he's got a knee problem.

From what I’ve seen of Williams so far, I can’t say I’ve been impressed. It’s not like he really earned the start. So I’m not expecting a great improvement from the line this week (hoping I’m wrong).

Where there’s a will… I want to be in it.

by Rick Bates on Oct 21, 2010 5:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Completely Agree.

Schwartz was just to slow, period. Reminds me of T. Wharton when he was our full time starter at LT. Wharton was also an easy mark b/c of his slow feet as well, but we moved him to LG and he has since become a much better player and way improved in pass and run blocking as well. Schwartz could be the answer at RG for years to come if he plays well.

Berandeau has been terrible this year and is not a starter in the NFL which is clearer now that he was given his shot. Bernadeau is great in spot duty but just not ready and may never be. Panthers need to add OL – depth in this upcoming draft which is gonna happen regardless of the CBA/ Players Union lockout. Williams has always played good enough in very rare time on the OL whether it is on the LT or RT spot (saw first action at RT Sunday for a snap or two). Hopefully Williams can take advantage of his opportunity unlike Berandeau.

Seriously Otah is still out, IR this guy I have defended him from day one but he is never on the field. For Otah to play he has to be at 110% which is as any football player at any level of the game will tell you is very, very rare. Football is a mans game and it is time for OTAH to man up and get on the field.

Sorry + Coaches.

It was two weeks ago for Williams first action at RT and sorry about #73 spelling not that it is gonna matter in a year when his contract is up seriously doubt Bernadeau is retained by the next head coach in Carolina. I pray we get T. Dungy out of retirement, or M. Mccoy is an interesting option since he was QB coach with us, and now a offensive coordinator with Broncos. Hell even Gruden at this point would be an upgrade over this crappy offensive unit that Fox, Davidson, and Hurney have put together. Hurney claims to have a new contract on his desk but he is not gonna resign with Panthers until the John Fox contract status is worked out. Fox is not gonna be retained so Hurney follow your buddy to Cleveland or New York after this season (more than likely biggest openings in the NFL besides Carolina) and take shitty J. Davidson with you. Only coach on the team worth a damn is R. Meeks.

I think they have a couple weeks yet to make that decision

Besides, its not like we are going to bring in anyone of any talent to replace him. PUP list ends week 8 and then I’m thinking they have 2 or 3 weeks to keep him or IR him. Going from memory so maybe someone can give us the word on it

Definitely a sign the team is trying to "find a spark"

At least they’re apparently acknowledging that they need to do more than just “execute” better.

Yup...nice to finally see it

MacBern was never intended to be a starter this year anyway…forced into it with Otah injury and purge of Vincent

wait untill we are 0-5 to make an adjustment. Just ridiculous. This should have been done BY week 3 at the latest. Watch us come out with a “gameplan” that works all of a sudden too.

Similar to comments made about Panthers offseason strategy;

“Not my decision to not start Macbern” LOL ~ Fox needs to go goodness this season cannot be over with soon enough.

Fox go coach Cleveland or NY Giants next season, nobody in Carolina cares anymore, you are a shell of the coach that came here and lead franchise to greatness 2003!

Good bye and take Hurney, and Davidson with you. Meeks is the only coach I would retain along with Rodgers special teams coach. Or yeah Tolbert WR’s coach is crap and needs to pack his bags as well. Wonder why our offense sucks, simple Defensive minded coach , J. Davidson former O-line man and formerly of the Cleveland Browns offense, and lastly Tolbert formerly of the Bills offense a year ago.

Man I cannot figure out why we cannot score points Foxy, GD- what a joke Fox has become.

Wonder what Steve Reed knows?

He said in his article on the line switch, " The move essentially sets the stage for Jeff Otah’s return, as the Panthers were expected to move Schwartz inside to guard once Otah returned to the lineup to give them more size up front. "

Hope that the big guy is close to his return.

If the stage was set wouldn't Otah be playing?

This is simply about benching a guy not performing and giving another young guy a chance

Do we know anything about Garry Williams?

I’m trying to think back but outside of maybe the preseason, I really don’t know anything about this guy other than he was undrafted in 09.

Even if Williams turns out to be a revolving door at least we should have a competent RG now.

Four out of five is better than three out of five in my book.

by GuyIncognito on Oct 21, 2010 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions

True

but Wharton should still probably be playing RT, as James outlined in an earlier commnet.

by aceofsween on Oct 21, 2010 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe Wharton might be a little better at RT now with many more years in the pros, but I think some of you forget how terrible he was at T in his ealry career. As good as he is at LG he is equally bad at RT.

by dcflw on Oct 23, 2010 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

When Jeff Otah went down last year

Wharton filled in and there was almost no drop off in our O-Line and last year the line was considered one of our greatest strengths.

by aceofsween on Oct 24, 2010 10:26 AM EDT up reply actions

He must not be that good in practice

or he would have been starting earlier. Hopefully he works out for the better. They still need to call some faster passing plays that Moore can audible at the line.

Although i wont comment at the Observer site anymore, because they are douchebags,

I still go there & read articles. In their article about it Bernadeau says he wasnt playing to his ability & he knows it. I wonder what exactly that meant. & If he knew it, why didnt he step his game up?

It is interesting that

the change has taken so long. It appears they have less faith in our OL depth – the likes of Garry Williams – to make a difference. At least as compared to the receivers.

I would have preferred to see Mack-Bern at LG and Wharton RG before they tried this but let’s hope this change works. I should be glad that they are trying something I guess.

by pieterzen on Oct 21, 2010 5:40 PM EDT reply actions

I like it.

I dont know if Williams will be at least decent at RT but hopefully he will be.
This could be us getting ready for Otah just because it provides a chance for Schwartz to get used to RG for a game or two before our O-line gets back to normal.

At least I hope so…

At least they''ve done some talent re-evaluation in the bye week.

Status quo was doing us in.

I imagine we’ll see a lot less of Brandon LaFell at WR, too, this week.

by bigdavis on Oct 21, 2010 6:01 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

I agree...

LaFell may end up a great receiver one day but, right now, he’s not performing up to par.

by D-Ranged1 on Oct 21, 2010 6:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Not healthy or ready

I still think the hammy issue similar to Clausen toe issue has hampered LaFell this season . Remember Moose played similar his first couple of years in the league, LaFell just need time to grow into the NFL game when he is finally healthy again. Wouldn’t surprise me if Brandon is inactive this Sunday (vs) 49ers either.

by Holty_Panthers_Fan on Oct 21, 2010 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions

My guess:

Smith/ Gettis: Starters

LaFell/Clowney/Thomas: Bench

Edwards: Inactive

Cat Scratch Reader's resident optimist.

by James Dator on Oct 21, 2010 6:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Nan I have different startes, Thomas needs to start along side Smitty.

Smitty / Thomas – Starters

Gettis / Clowney/ LaFell – bench

Edwards – inactive

Thomas needs to start, Gettis is good but not great and saying that he is the best upcoming WR on the Panthers roster isn’t saying much of anything. It is not hard to be the next great upcoming star of a team when the offense is such a state of uncertainity. Thomas was picked up and needs to start to give us any hope of beating the 49ers.

More importantly Panthers need to find the damn run game to beat the 49ers if we cannot run the play this Sunday we are dead. B.C. you have to rely on Matt Moore who is gonna more than likely throw two picks and lose a fumble and be throwing from his back the entire game.

by Holty_Panthers_Fan on Oct 21, 2010 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I say that not b/c of Moore’s ability but Clausen has had the same fate as well. OL is just terrible this year along with the game planning by the offensive coaching staff.

by Holty_Panthers_Fan on Oct 21, 2010 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions

You really believe Thomas is a better option than Gettis? Very interesting. I’m thinking with good QB play Gettis is the next big thing in the NFL, not just the Panthers. I’m hoping he quickly asserts himself as one of those rare size + speed guys.

Overall Panthers Draft Grade: A

by D-Ranged1 on Oct 21, 2010 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I pray your right D-Ranged1

Don’t get me wrong I love Gettis, I still hate the comparison most people say about him; “calling him a D.Carter with hands” ummm no Gettis is his own man and player. D. Carter was never anything special just like K. Colbert, LOL.

Thomas second elder statesmen on the team with most playing time, and Clowney of course but Clowney is nothing more than a vertical threat after seeing him play still like having him on this team however.

Still Thomas needs to start alongside Smitty this Sunday, Thomas is a bigger threat in most team’s eyes than Gettis whom is still viewed as a rookie WR across the NFL.

So you see not bashing Gettis I pray he does great things for us b/c we need it badly I was just viewing it as a coach for the other team, and Panthers need any elder statesmen on the field, even if Thomas was just drafted in 08 by the Skins.

Go Cardiac Cats, win a game for god-sake this Sunday.

We've actually played a lot of 3WR and 4WR sets this year, but without the talent out there to run the right routes, it hasn't mattered.

How many times have we seen Rosario run his man right into Smith, or Jarrett and/or LaFell do the same. There’s been so much confusion as to who runs where, it’s fairly easy to defend.

Once we develop some guys who can learn some rub techniques, we’ll have some open people in the secondary, which you’d think would be easy, given the number of 8-man fronts we face.

I’m optimistic that the new guys, Thomas and Clowney, can help the situation, maybe not for a week or two, but soon. When they do, Moore will be able to put up some numbers like last year.

I think Smith/Gettis/Thomas will be the first 3 out there, maybe with Rosario.

by bigdavis on Oct 21, 2010 10:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I bet its too early for Thomas to start

I’m still amazed at how far Gettis has come. Many of us thought he was PS squad material and look at him now.

Yeah, totally depends on how up-to-speed Thomas has managed to get with both

the playbook and timing with Moore. It’s a lot to ask a receiver to jump teams mid-season and be ready to start (unless it’s Randy Moss with Favre at QB). I’m guessing Gettis gets the start at #2, but we see Thomas, Clowney, and Edwards. I’ve got Lafell as the one not getting a jersey this week, based on his relative stinkage factor against the Bears.

Where there’s a will… I want to be in it.

Love the title LK

I figured this would be the line-up if they decided to bench MacBern. When Wharton was out a few plays they moved Schwartz inside and put Williams at RT. Williams sounds fired up to get the start so I’m looking forward to seeing out this new line-up performs.

i feel like starting SF Defense in fantasy since teams do fairly well against us defensively… this new change will hopefully be better (only one way to go from here… up) but for the first week, looks like matt moore might be in for some hurt
