Issues to Address in the Offseason

Now we had the toughest schedule in the league this season, but next year we have one of the easier schedules. But we should still get better. Just because we didn't get better last season, doesn't mean we shouldn't this season.

1st Area of Concern : Pass Offense-

Obviously, we have a huge QB controversy. Did Jake Delhomme really get hurt. Did it take him getting hurt for Fox to make the change.

Despite this, last season and this season we have had our no.3 reciever as Dante Rosario followed by Deangleo Willlaims.

We need another WR. Notable free agents: Brandon Marshall, Braylon Edwards, Terrell Owens, Vincent Jackson, Miles Austin, Antonio Bryant, Steve Breaston, Lance Moore.

2nd Area of Concern: Rush Defense:

This was probably because of the lack of Defensive Tackles, but Damione Lewis only had .5 sack this season. Also to note, many of DT's we used will be free agents. one, Derek Landri has a four-year contract somehow. I think we should keep Hollis Thomas and Louis Leonard.

Starters: Kemoeatu and Lewis

Backups: Leonard and Thomas and Irvin.

Now do we want 2 really fat guys as backups, because usually on third down we come out in 4 DE set.

Also Charles Johnson and Tyler Brayton had most sacks besides Julius Peppers 4 and 5 respectively. We need to have Johnson in more. And Brayton's a free agent, something tells me we won't bring him back.

I liked your write up

Wide receiver is our biggest need by a long shot. the good thing is that there are a ton of good free agent wide receivers this year and odds are we’ll get atleast one of them.

defensive tackle is a tough one. i really like our talent here. one guy that i think your forgeting is tank tyler. he was just starting to play a bigger role right before he got injured. a former starter for the cheifs and a big athletic body at DT. hes a guy im really high on.

Ive always been high on Brayton. Hes a solid to above average player (for our team) and i think hes earned the right to stay and have a nce new contract. However, i really would like to see more of Brown and Johnson (and yes maybe even a little hilee taylor). its tough because i really like our defensive ends. we have a lot of potential there

Don't forget DT Tank Tyler

Given we gave up a draft pick for him I see him sticking around for camp. I think we do need a FA wR but I don’t see the Panthers getting anyone from that list. They would instead go after a 2nd or even 3rd tier guy just as they did with DJ Hackett in 2008.

Given how deep this draft is in WR I can see a mid-round pick being used on a guy that slips.

Don't forget Nate Burleson!

After all, his name has generated 97 comments on this blog.

IMO Panthers off season issues go like this:

1 Keep coaching staff intact
2. Have Matt Moore enter camp as the starting (or potential starting) QB
3.. improve the punt/kick return game
4. sign a FA #2 WR…..OR try to re-sign Peppers and draft WR with early draft pick.
5. Bring the loquacious run stuffer (H. Thomas) back.

Now my personal off season issues:
Sell off my Eagles memorabilia collection to generate funds to:
1. Install Dish & purchase NFL Sunday ticket so I don’t miss any games.
2. purchase Panthers memorablia to redecorate our sports room in Panthers motif.

Agree for the most part

1. Keep Fox and most of the staff, but I’d like to see Davidson and ST coach change.

NFL Ticket is pricey but very nice

the whole stats thing is sweet, keeps you up on FFL. I loved the red zone channel but wasn’t about to pay extra for it. It would seem if you are forking out $250+ for the Ticket they could give you the red zone channel.

We had the Red Zone channel this season...

it actually came standard with our Comcast HD package. But being out-of-towners we missed too much of too many Panthers games. We went to bars to see several games but that gets a little expensive for a family of four.

Redzone doesn't really help an out of state Panthers fan...

We weren’t in the red zone very often.

I don't think we have a "QB controversy" at all

I’d kinda forgotten this post I made last month, on the Film Breakdown of Matt Moore vs Tampa Bay thread, but it bears repeating:

“I have to go back again to the measurables – not the stats on completions, or %’s or ratios, but the observations of his mechanics.

If you have a QB who has velocity and accuracy on his throws, who maintains balance, who can evade a rush (not every time but sometimes), and most importantly, doesn’t take but an average of 3 seconds to deliver the pass – you’ve got the potential for a fine result.

Has anybody but I thought about the quick release aspect to measuring the value of a QB?

(Now if this was just a fluke because he was playing against the lowly Bucs, and he wilts against better teams’ pressure, and takes 4-5 seconds to make up his mind, and takes sacks and fumbles the ball, then I’ll throw it all out the window. But I don’t think that’s gonna happen.)

We’ve got our QB — now just get him another WR and we’re good to go.

We may have OUR QB in Moore but the question remains if the coaching staff sees it the same way.

Fox is old school, which means he’ll abide by the ‘Guy doesn’t lose his job due to injury’ methodology. Expect to see Moore and Delhomme both competiting for the starting job in 2010.

I don't mind the competition, actually.

If it’s evaluated on performance, it gives us the better guy starting. And instead of multiple bad games, Jake would only get one (provided he won such a competition in pre-season) next year before he were pulled. Anything outside of that would mark Fox as a coach who’d lost the team, and his job the next year.

I think he wasn’t so much stupid as he was unaware that Moore could deliver as he did. Fox’s eyes had to have been opened wide by Moore’s work the last 5 games.

by bigdavis on Jan 13, 2010 12:30 PM EST up reply actions

You can't bench a QB after 1 game.

That’s they an actual open competition wouldn’t work. Moore just needs to be given about 8 starts to see what he can do and if he is terrible at that point, we A) See what our new 2nd round QB can do for the rest of the season or B) We didn’t bring in any young QB’s so we might as well stick with Moore over Jake for the 2nd half of the season.

by Mr. E on Feb 7, 2010 4:58 PM EST up reply actions

I think the 1st move is to get rid of Peppers. Yes I think Peppers is a great DE but I would cost too much to get him to stay. If we trade him we could get a top five 2nd round draft pick for him, that we could use to get Colt McCoy, Tim Tebow or Jared Odrick(DT from Penn State). Next sign a good free agent DE like Aaron Kampman and we could sign him for a 6yr $35M deal. Then still might have enough to sign an unhappy Joshua Cribbs which would fix both the shot receiver problems and give us a huge help in the return game as well.

by COpanthersfan on Jan 13, 2010 3:06 AM EST reply actions

SAY NO TO TEBOW!!!

No way. Besides, the Jags will get him in the first round anyway.

by BW Smith on Jan 13, 2010 12:08 PM EST up reply actions

Honestly I wouldn't mind Tebow

He’d bring in more fans from a business perspective, and he could be a good weapon given some time on the bench to learn. Although I’m not sure if our QB coach is the right one to fix Tebow.

Personally...

I’d rather win a Super Bowl with a real QB than get a few extra fans off the bandwagon, I think Tebow is going to amount to wasted space on the bench that could be used for someone else.

For our team that doesn't really need his type of QB

yes. We don’t have the creativity to use him, and I doubt our current QB coach is the right man to fix him. BUT, he has an elite work ethic, strong arm, and when his mechanics are correct, solid accuracy. If his mechanics are fixed, he would be a heck of a QB.

Plus he’s kind of my role model, home schooled til a late age, then became a successful college QB. :)

In the Pre-season maybe

but why would fans pay to see him ride the pine? I don’t think many teams would be starting him next season.

by Mr. E on Feb 7, 2010 5:00 PM EST up reply actions

He wouldn't ride the pine

He’d be mixed in some Wildcat packages, goalline, short yardage, etc.
