Panthers 2009 Season Offensive and Defensive MVPs - One Fans Picks

Okay folks, its time to hand out the first ever Ain't No Jive Turkey awards.  WTF, you inquire? I couldn't come up with a better name...feel free to do so yourself....and maybe we can have a yearly CSR poll about this moving forward.

Enough with the pleasantries.  My pick for Offensive MVP is Ryan Kalil.  That's right, I said it--and that's right, he is an offensive lineman.  He is also the glue of our offensive line, did not miss a snap, and could consistently be found in the second level getting down-field blocks.  I know, the traditional line of thinking is give it to a skill player, but Double Trouble is kind of a team in itself, so I thought singling one of them out would be difficult.  Steve Smith would be another viable choice, but his production was down, as this was the first time since his injury in 2004 that he did not get to 1000 yards (he was still great).   If Matt Moore were inserted earlier in the year, perhaps he'd have been my choice...but when he did play, he was just asked not to screw it up, as Jake Delhomme was unable to do--he was not asked to win games at the end by himself--as Jake used to do.  Insert Procton's defense of Jake here...jk i love you buddy.

Star-divide

On defense, my pick has to be Jon Beason.  He is the emotional leader of the defense, and probably (with Jake out) the whole team.  He also set the franchise record in total tackles, breaking his own record.  My runner up would be Damione Lewis.  He had perhaps his best season as a pro.  I say this because he had a different guy next to him every game until Hollis came around (Hollis would be like the 4th runner up).  Julius Peppers, if not for his broken hand--and therefore low tackle and pressure numbers, would be a suitable runner up.  Thomas Davis would have certainly pushed Beason for the Defensive Ain't No Jive Turkey Award had he not been injured midway through the season.  In fact, I love you Beast, but TD was slightly outshining you when push comes to shove.  This is a very promising 1-2 punch for years to come.  Our secondary was solid all year but I again cannot single out one player in said secondary as the MVP of the defense.  These picks are the only right ones, soooo the end.  JK again, feel free to tell me how stupid and wrong I am in the comment section.  Thaaaaaaaaaaaaaaanks!

Offensive MVP: Double Trouble

Yes, there’s two of them, but you don’t set an NFL record and not get this award far as I’m concerned.

Defensive MVP: Ron Meeks

I don’t think I can overstate the influence of this man on our defense. There was a very painful transition period, but once it ended, we played lights out, if giving up a few too many rushing yards. ^^;

Very nice shout-outs to Kalil and Lewis

They do their jobs; they go unnoticed; others look good because of it.

That’s valuable.

Actually Ryan Kalil is very highly ranked, in production, among centers in the league. I can see him moving to Pro Bowl status in the years ahead.

WHAT?!? No Matt Moore?

You mean Moore isn’t your MVP?!? C’Mon man…

by BW Smith on Jan 4, 2010 7:50 PM EST up reply actions

why would you ask me that?

But matt moore didn’t do anything special he just didn’t screw up. He didn’t do as bad as jake…and that’s no reason for mvp. Next year if he throws for over 4000 yards and 30 touchdowns with 10 int’s or less then he will get my vote.

Double trouble made history case closed. But yeah why would you ask ME no matt moore???

by bannedfromsbnation on Jan 4, 2010 8:07 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Because of this...

But that might have worked for moore…moore completes passes for damn good yardage and doest throw picks he throws td’s…based on what I’ve seen from him we could have won pretty much every game…especially 1 of those 3 passes in the 4th at the superdome… and I think moore is the reason the whole team has come together. You can tell from harris’s comments that the d is excited about moores play. I think the whole team respects jake but wanted change. They got it and came out firing.

Sounds like you’re pretty high on Moore, I figured he would be your MVP since he brought the whole team together.

by BW Smith on Jan 4, 2010 9:08 PM EST up reply actions

he did but not like that

The fact that there was a new guy undercenter that was giving the ball to the other team like he bet on them to win…the team seemed to pick up their level in all aspects of the game. But I think that’s just because he wasn’t delhomme and wasn’t throwing the picks. If he would have went in and threw 3 picks I don’t think it would be like this. Motivation is huge and watching jake rape your season can take the wind out of your sales. But yeah I have confidence in him. He does his job. He protects the ball and throws touchdowns. Its been a long time since we have had that so I am appreciative.

plus theres this nugget

Matt Moore threw a TD pass to Dwayne Jarrett… that’s gotta count for some HUGE award… how many of these radio calls have you heard the past 3 seasons…“Touchdown Dwayne Jarrett!”….

I have to say, great job! I like your picks. Not your typical “he gets his name mentioned the most so he must be the best”. Kalil was definitely a good decision on your part.

Hopefully next year the defense will be a draw with so many outstanding players.

MVP's

Nice post ERL

Offensive:
- I really like the Ryan Kalil pick, I think you made a lot of sound reason why he could be the man, however, I just can’t go past Double Trouble. I would have to give them co-mvp. If for no other reason than them setting a new NFL record.

Defensive:
- I like Slayer’s shout out to Ron Meeks. Most people know I’ve had a man-crush on him since about week 3, but if we’re looking at a player I have to go a little unconventional. Hollis Thomas is my pick. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Thomas helped spark Jon Beason’s resurgance in 2009, and was a key reason the defense became tougher in every area. Hollis made everyone around him better, and though his job was to plug the middle he did his job better than Albert Haynesworth, the $100 million man did in Washington.

Of course if Thomas Davis stayed healthy it’s no competition, he wins hands down.

I agree with Hollis Thomas. Seemed to me he quietly did his job and did it well. And it was about the time he showed up that the defense started to shift into gear

I keep wondering why he's never included in lists of all the DT we've got back next year.

I know the guy’s up in years, but he played very effectively for us — as well as Kemo ever had, IMO — and by my calendar, he’s only gonna be 8 months older when next season begins.

Our D started to regain its balance when he got on board — and that’s about when we started to see Beason become a big influence again.

Realistically he was only brought in as a stop gap.

I can't argue with ya either

Well maybe I’d give offensive to Stewart. Over 1100 yards with only 4 starts. More total yards than his Pro-Bowl counterpart. More yards in a game than his Pro-Bowl counterpart. Not knocking DeAngelo, just saying that’s pretty impressive for a backup.

And the way he sent NYG packing??? Priceless!

+1

how many backups in the league can say they have 1100 yds under their belt? And don’t mind being a backup.

I like both picks for sure

But I think Davis, Beason, Meeks, and Double Trouble are all worthy candidates too.

by SmithnCompany on Jan 4, 2010 10:24 PM EST reply actions

Stewart offensive MVP (piling on all those yards while not being a starter for a large part of the season and while being hurt all year!!), Beason defensive MVP (one of the best MLBs right now, what a shame he is not going to pro-bowl), and Captain Munnerlyn is the rookie of the year (mostly because he was picked in 7th round and no one thought he would even play).

by ctcp on Jan 4, 2010 10:45 PM EST reply actions

Not that it matters to anyone..

But note that, even at back-up, Stewart finished the season with (few) more carries than Williams. (Undoubtedly due to Williams missing games due to injury.)

My MVP's (lets just call them that ;) )

Offense: Double Trouble. That’s what made our offense go, Kalil is definitely an underrated contributor, but Double Trouble get the award.

Defense: Hollis Thomas. The sticky stuff that holds us together, his sense of humor and ample paunch took up space in the middle and allowed Beason to roam free. Davis too.

Double Trouble and Captain Munnerlyn

From expected success to surprise success both are worthy.

double trouble were able to be effective with each other and without.

Captain was able to provide as close to 1 on 1 for a defensive player chosen in the 7th round of his rookie season. The ability of this guy to be able to keep his own without experience in the Pro’s speaks loudly.

I have read that he is the “Marcus Colston of defense”. So true.

Noplace else in Recent Fanposts to put this (hard to believe there are none current on Matt Moore)

Some pretty interesting stat comparisons on Moore, per Panthers.com:

" During Weeks 13-17, the only quarterback who started at least three games and a had a better ratng than Moore’s 104.9 rating was San Diego’s Philip Rivers, who logged an 111.5 rating in that span.

Further, Moore was ninth in yardage per attempt (7.9 yards), tied for ninth in touchdown and passes and — most significantly — first in interception percentage, with only one interception in 126 throws in December and January.

And for those who disdain the passing numbers and focus on the winning percentage, there was only one quarterback who had a better record as a starter than Moore the last five weeks: the afore-mentioned Rivers, the only man with a higher rating. "
