Carolina Panthers’ Monday Morning Optimist- 1/4/2010

Good morning Panther faithful! Welcome to the last ‘Monday Morning Optimist' of the 2009 season. The column will be back for the 2010 season with all your optimistic needs. It's been a great journey thus far, and I look forward to bringing it again to you guys. I honestly never thought my little format would prove so popular with the CSR community, and I thank all of you for reading, commenting and helping me improve the style throughout the season.

In the last game of the 2009 season the Carolina Panthers closed out their rather unimpressive year 8-8, which is nothing to be sneezed at in the modern NFL. A lot of talk this previous week has been about momentum, mostly directed at the New Orleans Saints and their 3 game losing streak. When I talk about momentum, however, I'm talking about the roll the Panthers are on right now, closing out the season winning four out of the last five games, taking care of the ball on offense and dominating four of the NFL's top offenses on defense. There is a lot to look forward to in 2010, which I will look at extensively today.

So please, join me as I break down the performances from the Panthers Sunday win and as we look forward into 2010:

After the jump...

Star-divide

As quiet and mundane as the 2009 offseason was for the Panthers (punctuated solely by the Julius Peppers' saga) the 2010 offseason proves to be its polar opposite. It will be very dangerous for the Carolina Panthers- an offseason that could either set the franchise up for long term success over the next 5 years, or set the Panthers back. While at first it may seem like a statement like this is hyperbole laden, in reality there are some very big and tough decisions for Jerry Richardson, and/or Marty Hurney.

These decisions are:

  • An extension for John Fox: It's gone from mere speculation, to bonafide reality in my mind. Though Fox is known to dodge questions about others, he typically doesn't avoid questions about himself. Now Fox is dodging the question whether he will return to the Carolina Panthers with 1 year remaining, or whether he will leave if a guaranteed long term offer is available. It's clear Fox wants to remain Panther long term, but I also think he's upset ownership don't have the confidence to get a deal done now. This is one of those moments that will set the Panthers up for years to come. This team is simply too good to be put into ‘rebuilding' status, as it just needs minor tweaking. Should a new coach arrive and want to clean house and instill his own system then it could be a long few years for Carolina Panther fans.
  • An extension for Julius Peppers: The saga continues in 2010. Peppers is an anomaly when it comes to NFL players. He doesn't seem to be solely driven by money, or winning, but his own personal agenda. While that sounds worse than it is, Peppers has made no qualms in the past discussing how he wants to be in a city where he can remain anonymous. That won't happen in Charlotte where despite the drama last offseason Panther fans love #90. Last year Jerry Richardson was prepared to make Julius the richest defensive player in the history of the NFL, and he declined. Now Albert Haynesworth and the Washington Redskins have wrecked the scale for defensive lineman and it will take a lot of money without a sweetheart discount to secure Pep long term. The decision the Panthers need to make is whether Julius is worth Jared Allen money and should be paid like the top DE in the NFL? Should they trade the ProBowler pre-draft and possibly net a high pick? Should they let Pep leave outright and use the saved money to pursue free agents? When Peppers is on him game he's as unstoppable as any DE in the NFL, but much like the team he plays for, Pep is wildly inconsistent.
  • Is Matt Moore the long term answer? The Carolina Panthers currently have a 3rd string QB playing amazing football. The long time justification as to why the Panthers failed to address the QB position was that Matt Moore was being groomed to be the heir apparent. Whether Moore is the long terms solution at the position remains to be seen, but what I do know if the Panthers can't afford to lose Moore outright, nor can they franchise him and be locked in to paying Moore like he's Tom Brady or Peyton Manning for one season. Locking up Moore to a long term, low guaranteed, high incentive based contract should be one of the Panthers' top offseason priorities.
  • Will Moose be cut loose? With every catch ‘Moooooose' is heard throughout Bank of America Stadium, it's clear that Panther fans love WR Muhsin Muhammad. Moose believes he still has plenty left in the tank, as do most fans. However, it may be time to step down Moose's snaps and move him to the slot and cause matchup issues in 2010. Will Muhammad accept a diminished role? What kind of money will it require? It proves to be another interesting element to the offseason.
  • A new deal for Thomas Davis: Prior to his injury Thomas Davis was having as good an NFL season as I've ever seen from an outside linebacker. I know that seems like a lofty statement, but look at what his projected stats would have been: 139 tackles, 109 solo, 4.5 INT, 3.5 sacks. Along with working out the Coaching situation I think Thomas Davis should be the first priority of the Panthers. We lost an excellent OLB in Will Witherspoon in the past, and in Meeks' offense Davis could be better.

Of course there are myriad other focal points for the Carolina Panthers, but I see these as the 5 most important factors that are in the Panthers' hands. Now, let's go back to Sunday's game to break down the performances.

OPTIMISTIC

Matt Moore- Extremely Optimistic: After an incredibly rocky start Moore righted the ship on Sunday and put forward a solid performance. I didn't have a lot of hope for a good game from Moore, not because I don't trust him, but that I put a lot of stock in Steve Smith's importance. Moore was solid again, cementing the notion that he needs to be looked at very strongly to take over the QB mantle in 2010.

Jonathan Stewart- Extremely Optimistic: An unremarkable season, but a remarkable performance from Double Trouble in 2009. Stewart finished the season the Carolina Panthers' leading rusher (by 16 yards) and got his longest carry of the season on the second play of Sunday's game. The Panthers are now the first team in NFL history to have two running backs exceed 1,100 yard in the same season. This is a remarkable record, and bodes to be very long standing.

Jon Beason- Extremely Optimistic: Beason was robbed blind by his ProBowl snub. He's not even the 1st alternate should Vilma and the Saints make the Superbowl, that distinction goes to Redskins' LB London Fletcher. Beason played with a giant chip on his shoulder, and for good reason. Great game from Beast.

Julius Peppers- Extremely Optimistic:  Peppers turned in another solid performance capping off a day of pressure with a late interception. Peppers looks like he's having fun on the sideline, and enjoying life in the Ron Meeks' defense. Let's hope this carries over to when it's time to sign on the bottom line.

Dwayne Jarrett- Extremely Optimistic: This could be the only time Jarrett ever garners this distinction, but he played great yesterday. While it could very well be too little, too late (Darin Gantt previously said he doubted Jarrett would make the 53 in 2010) yesterday's performance coupled with a good offseason could mean we haven't seen the last of Jarrett as a Carolina Panther.

Brad Hoover- Extremely Optimistic: I could give him this award for his great blocking on the Jonathan Stewart TD run, or for the eagerness to carry the load in the 4th quarter, but ultimately this goes to Hoover for one of the funniest Panther moments of 2009: Hoov carrying the ball out of the wildcat for a 3 yard gain. Hoover looked surprised his number was called, and then got up with a smile on his face that seemed to indicate just how bizarre the play call was.

Muhsin Muhammad- Extremely Optimistic: Moose, you're still as great as ever. I want you to remain a Panther.

Richard Marshall- Somewhat Optimistic: A solid game from Marshall capped off how solid the Panthers' secondary has been in 2009. While they may not be household names, they turn out performances that everyone talks about around the water cooler.

PESSIMISTIC

Mike Goodson- Somewhat Pessimistic: After a solid performance against the Giants in limited time, I hoped Goodson would show more with the ball in his hands. He looked like a rookie on Sunday, which isn't a wholly bad thing, but he needs to work on more moves to get the ball into the second level.

Overall Analysis

You can't be upset to see the Panthers' backups and reserves play like they did as a unit on Sunday. Without DeAngelo Williams, Steve Smith, Jeff Otah, Jordan Gross and Jonathan Stewart (for much of the 2nd half) the Panthers beat the Saints' backups. Its games like these that set you up for the ensuing season and give the team a lot of positives to really build on. The last month of Carolina Panther football has been a quite optimistic affair, and the team has made optimists out of the most pessimistic of fans due to their recent play.

Provided Jerry Richardson and Marty Hurney are able to make prudent, smart and beneficial decisions there is no reason the Panthers shouldn't be prepared to have a very special season in 2010. Sure, we don't have the flash of some other teams- but we have the toughness, and more importantly the defense; defense wins championships. Am I saying the Panthers will win the Superbowl in 2011? No, but what I am saying is that over time the Panthers improved from having the 30th ranked defense to finishing with the 8th ranked defense, and over the last 5 weeks the Panthers had the no.1 defense in the NFL against some of the best offenses. The future is very, very bright for the Big Cat's team- provided they handle the team with kid gloves.

150% Optimistic about the future as we head into the offseason.

Jon Beason on signing Pep after the game:

"I think he wants to be here, it’s just a matter of the contract — man, make it happen. Let’s keep him here," Beason said. "I think it’s a matter of the contract now. He’s not going to leave here to go somewhere where things would be the same. If he’s going to leave, he’s going to leave for the mountaintop in terms of a big market, or maybe a Super Bowl contender every year, but other than that, I think he wants to be here.

by John Chilton on Jan 4, 2010 9:51 AM EST reply actions

I just don't get it...

If it’s just the contract it would have been done this time last year.

Beason leaves alot of room there… “If he’s going to leave (it will be)… a big market, or maybe a Superbowl contender every year”

It’s Dallas, NE or the NYG that scare me about getting Peppers, not Oakland or Cleveland.

I think previously it was more than the contract

He lost confidence in the defensive scheme and the coaches. But that appears to have been rectified.

No 1 D over the last 5 weeks? Wow…and that was against some quality teams

Sign the man.

Whatever it takes. He is part of our defensive identity. And a BIG part at that. I think he loves our new scheme, and I hope he stays.

by Tater596 on Jan 4, 2010 10:56 AM EST up reply actions

I’ve seen more life and excitement in the man than I ever remember seeing in him before. He went from sitting alone on the bench earlier in the season to standing and cheering his teammates and just overall looking like he’s having more fun.

by EyeSack on Jan 4, 2010 12:36 PM EST up reply actions

I will be devastated if he isn't signed.

Everything about the way he’s conducted himself the end of the season indicates he’s happy to be here, wants to stay, and loves his teammates and the system he now has learned to love. What he said last year this time is forgotten.

Sign him, and our defense will wreak havoc next year.

And if he chooses not to sign here?

Will you be devastated then, too?

Considering the Panthers reportedly (I think by the Charlotte Observer) the Panthers offered Peppers enough money to be the highest paid defensive player in the NFL at one point and it was turned down…I think him choosing not to sign in Carolina is the issue.

I don’t recall it ever being an issue of Carolina making an offer, but Peppers finding the offer acceptable.

Yeah, I read that already. Thanks for the link though, I am obsessive about reading about the Panthers.

I feel better about it, but I am still slightly nervous about the situation. Hurney and Co. are usually fairly good with the cap, but I am one of those annoying people who have questions a/b Peppers production so I worry about how much it will cost us to re-sign him.

by bengoodfella on Jan 4, 2010 3:49 PM EST up reply actions

clean slate bro

This is a new system that he enjoys…his production could be through the roof for years to come now…who knows? But 1 thing we don’t want is to have to play against him in the sb or nfc championship because he will decide to turn it on and that will be a loss. He played a lot better than his stats suggest so I want him. And bottom line we should have a good bit of cap room after we get a lot of these guys resigned to longterm deals. But pep will be payed like a top de because he is so don’t expect a 10 mill a year contract. Pay him..pay dat man his money

by bannedfromsbnation on Jan 4, 2010 4:28 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Then again...

There’s no immediate concern about the cap, because it probably won’t exist next year.

"That was a year ago"

"That was a year ago," he said. "I don’t really think it’s productive to go back and re-open those conversations about what I was feeling at that time because it was a year ago. Anything that was said a year ago is irrelevant right now because it’s a new situation and it’s a new day."

Peppers said he enjoyed playing in the new defensive system installed this year by new defensive coordinator Ron Meeks.

   "It was better," he said.

"I was happy with how I was used and how we did on defense."

+1 all around

I agree with your assessment. If the Panthers hadn’t dug themselves the 3-game hole (mostly injuries), they had a outside shot at a Wildcard spot.

Not a bad year, and looking forward to these issues getting cleared up, and a wonderful 2010 Season!

2010 will be a new team

Fox will leave. DeAngelo will be traded so they can get something for him before his contract expires. Jake’s gone. Davidsons gone. Moose’s contract is up. Peppers will leave for some killer contract elsewhere.

Let’s hope they can fill all the holes!

I, for one, hope you are dead wrong.....just sayin'
  • Keep Fox – Stability
  • Why would you trade Deangelo? Plan on keeping him long term. (Like someone ELSE is going to come along even better? – sarcasm…)
  • Jake’s gone – Wouldn’t mind keeping him one more year as a tutor to the QB’s. NOT as starter.
  • Davidson’s gone – no problem with this….
  • Keep Moose and Pep.

TOO much off season tinkering can dismantle the intangibles of an otherwise lackluster season… such as learning new systems and team mate’s tendencies. There’s alot of power under the hood of this machine, if it can be maintained and smartly tuned during the offseason.

My gut feeling (I have alot of those lately)

Fox stays: Double trouble remains intact
New HC: Trades one member of double trouble to recoup 1st round pick, and then some.

I wouldn't want ANY headcoach willing to break up DT..

Because that means we’re only 1 injury away from Tyrell Sutton & Mike Goodson. I personally don’t want us to find ourselves in that position again so soon.

If we traded one of those guys...

We’d certainly get another more solid RB than Sutton or Goodson, either through the draft or FA. Young, cheap backs with upside really aren’t that hard to come by. Ask Denver.

Let me go ahead and state the obvious for Procton's sake

This is 100% pure speculation. I’m sure everyone else picked up on that. But they are all a possibility, and it’s only negative if we don’t replace them with better options.

on behalf of tha dirty south: soul food, carolina blue, southern hospitality, and tha queen city

by southtunnel on Jan 4, 2010 12:12 PM EST up reply actions

So really anything could happen with these guys, but the first 2 make a lot of sense

Fox doesn’t look happy in his press conferences. And when asked if he wanted to be in Charlotte next year, he could have easily said something like "Sure it’s a nice city, but we’ll have to weigh our options". But instead he only says something like "I need to discuss it with my family and decide if it’s best for us to be here". He clearly trying to communicate that he is not happy with his situation.

AND if we don’t resign or trade DeAngelo this offseason, then we could lose him next year with no compensation. We are not going to keep and pay 2 pro-bowl caliber RBs forever. And we can get the most for DeAngelo right now, before he signs a big contract. We need a really good backup, not a top 5-10 backup.

No, they're not.

Both of those guys play a position where they’re the only player who’s a factor. The Patriots traded Cassell for precisely the same reason we should trade one of our tandem: two top players at the position will never be able to produce enough to be worth the salary they’ll command.

By your logic we should trade Stewart. And yeah, the two of them will be worth it. Because both will allow us to dominate. Sure, we COULD be well off with just one. But think about how well off we ARE with both. Why mess with that?

What happens if the one we choose gets hurt?

What happens if a team shuts him down. If we trade one then our offense is screwed when that happens. If we don’t, we just go to #1b.

Lockout in 2011

I would say that the possibility of a lockout in 2011 would play a factor in his decision. If he doesn’t get a long term deal now he could find he has not paycheck in 2011.

I think Darin Gantt mentioned this as well.

by LittleKing on Jan 4, 2010 12:34 PM EST up reply actions

Not sure if you were trying sarcasm there, but...

I don’t believe ANY of those things will happen.

3 strong wins, with across-the-board contributions, to finish the season, when other teams (Giants, Broncos, Jags) in contention all choked it up — that’s what draws a team together.

A high tide floats all boats. The theme will be unity, not change.

It is a bit harder to close the season on a strong note when you actually have the pressure of it mattering.

That's pretty much what I meant by choking (because of the pressure)

You don't think any of them will???

Moose’s contract is definitely up… So technically that one has to happen. But when players become valuable it’s hard to keep them all on one team. They’ll want to get paid, and we also need to consider the long term repercussions

We have to do something with Double Trouble eventually

DeAngelo can leave on his own next year. And if we sign him to a huge contract, what do we do when Stewart’s contract is up? Have a backup getting top pay? At that point DeAngelo will be harder to trade being older and more expensive. Right now we are in the best situation to make a deal. Otherwise we are risking a lot on the 2010 season.

on the CSR MMO piece throughout the 2009 season, even when it was difficult to remain optimistic. Keep up the good work!

Nice Job James!

I enjoyed reading this article throughout the entire season! Good show <3

I really hope you continue it at least partially into the offseason.

Glad to hear MMO will be back next season, I agree we should have alot to be optimistic about next year.
I think your Overall Analysis perfectly sums up where we stand. I hope our front office can keep everything intact and we can hit camp in full stride and pick right up where we left off at the end of this season.

Something that nobody's mentioned...

We were just 3-15 on third downs yesterday. I understand we were working with limited personnel and play calls available to us, but that kind of performance isn’t going to win games on a regular basis.

I also wouldn't have called Goodson's performance against NY particularly special.

He was real inefficient (2 yards on 5 carries), and I actually thought he was much better in that regard against NO. 3.4 YPC isn’t impressive, but it’s a start for a guy who needs to learn how to go north-south.

I didn't really look at the 3rd downs because of the personnell.

Panthers were 0-7 on 3rd down when Jonathan Stewart was off the field.

3-8 with Stewart on the field is right where the Panthers have been all season, but I agree we need to get better in 2009.

Adapting to life without Proehl and Davis, those two were go to guys on third down.

Great job, James..

Been a great weekly read for the entire season.

I agree with you dead on, except for 1 part. I’m actually somewhat optimistic about Goodson and his performance. He finished with a respectable back-up performance @ 3.9yds per carry and got the longest gain of his season in an 11yd run. That’s far from decent but a start to what will hopefully be a very good offseason for him. The natural ability is there, I just hope he works on his skills. If he learns to evade tackles consistently, he could end up a speed demon next year.

Speaking of next year, looking at the schedule, I only see two teams (Baltimore & Pittsburgh) that might give us trouble if we continue playing at this level.

Then again...

If we had played that game last year, I’m sure we wouldn’t have picked losses to Buffalo or the Jets. The “schedule evaluation” game is among the most overrated things going in the NFL.

by MichaelProcton on Jan 4, 2010 3:13 PM EST up reply actions

I'm glad you pointed that out..

Because every other soul that reads that comment will be too unintelligent to understand the loose speculation that it was, being teams change by the year.

Obviously, I’m not preparing to enter next season expecting a 14-2 season with losses solely to Baltimore & Pittsburgh, though at this current time based on the way said teams have been playing, they are the only two teams I would worry about.

Also, I never noted that they would be our only losses (or that they would be a loss at all for that matter) – only that they were teams I would before-hand think “oh, this is going to be tough”. A loss can come expected or, more often, not (as you gave perfect examples of).

An actual prediction? I’ll say 13-3.

I am torn between questioning your sanity and being happy that you are that optimistic for next season…

I like how you were offended MP didn’t get your speculative tone and thought you actually predicted the Panthers would only have 2 losses next year, then actually predict the Panthers will only lose 3 games. You know that’s only a 1 loss difference in speculation and reality right?

by bengoodfella on Jan 4, 2010 3:26 PM EST up reply actions

Offended? You're not new are you?

Far from offended sir.

by D-Ranged1 on Jan 4, 2010 3:34 PM EST up reply actions

Oh no, I am not new. So you weren’t actually serious about the actual prediction then? It doesn’t really matter, I am just wondering because 13-3 is very optimistic for a team that is a little up in the air in some ways.

by bengoodfella on Jan 4, 2010 3:37 PM EST up reply actions

To adequately answer..

MP is known to take certain pieces of comments and exaggerate them extensively, then lace them with sarcasm. There’s also an old saying that goes “treat others how you’d like to be treated”. Sometimes I like to give it back, if only slightly. In the end, I feel it’s in the spirit of a debate and never actually intended to offend anyone.

As far as my prediction, I would love to see the Panthers finish 13-3 (or 14-2 would be amazing) though it’s entirely too early for any sort of valid guesswork. Once the off season moves are made and the draft complete, we’ll have a much better understanding of where we stand and I’ll make an “official” season prediction sometime thereafter. 13-3 was more of a joke being there was, as you pointed out, only a 1 loss difference.

By the way…
“I am torn between questioning your sanity and being happy that you are that optimistic for next season…”

The screen name is a take on “deranged” for a reason ;) lol

I got you. I am familiar with MP’s responses to have gotten a couple back as well. I got you that 13-3 was a joke. I didn’t get it at first and thought it was a very optimistic prediction for a team that had a few holes they need to work on. At least we get a 3rd place schedule, I guess that’s a good thing.

by bengoodfella on Jan 4, 2010 3:52 PM EST up reply actions

Don't worry..

My actual prediction certainly isn’t going to be anywhere near the 8-8 we completed this season (heck, I might stick with 13-3 just to be superstitious, you know things go bad when you start changing them up).. Assuming the right decisions are made (and capable of being made, I know some extend beyond our control) we’re definitely a SB caliber team. We just have to put it together and go do it.

I am never really offended, perhaps I shouldn’t have used the word offended.

I know this is off topic, but Everette Brown looked decent yesterday against the Saints and that makes me hopeful he may play pretty well next year. I am optimistic for his future.

I agree the schedule means nothing now. I actually ignore it until we get closer to the season. I thought he was being serious when saying the Panthers would go 13-3 but it turns out he was kidding about that as well. I don’t get sarcasm too well over the Interwebs…

by bengoodfella on Jan 4, 2010 8:21 PM EST up reply actions

And further turns out..

After actually considering the schedule (in the hypothetical situation next season were to start tomorrow), I still ended up 13-3 :)

If we can recall his college video, Thunderstruck, which we all salivated over...

it showed he was very elusive in space. but he’s not the type of runner to be very successful running between the tackles, it seems to me. I’s always wondered why Carolina didn’t employ him in motion, or in the slot, taking a pass over the middle.

Both Stewart and Williams have seen numerous runs between the tackles end in no gain, or 1-2 yd losses. It’s when one of them regroups, backs up, and cuts it to the outside, that they often break off good gains. Goodson needs to learn to do that, too.

They tried in the preseason.

He was pretty mediocre (although he was getting lots of reps against starters and top backups unlike most young players.) And while Stewart and Williams have seen numerous inside runs stopped for short gains, they weren’t getting stuffed at nearly the rate Goodson is, and unlike Goodson, they typically fight through the first contact. Goodson hasn’t shown much tackle-breaking ability no matter what the type of play.

home and away games out for next year

Home: Atlanta, New Orleans, Tampa Bay, Arizona, San Francisco, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Chicago
Away: Atlanta, New Orleans, Tampa Bay, St. Louis, Seattle, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, N.Y. Giants

Getting San Francisco, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Chicago here an advantage

All of those 4 have distinctly better home records than away.

Cleveland, St. Louis, and Seattle are mediocre, anyway, and we showed we can handle the Giants at their place.

Far more favorable schedule, on the face of it, than what we had to contend with this year.
