Should the Panthers sign T.O. this offseason?

Here's an interesting thought (at least I think so)...

Terrell Owens will be a free agent since he only signed a one-year deal with the Bills. The Panthers are in need of another WR to complement Smitty, and it would most likely take 2-3 years before a rookie is ready to assume the role. Would it be a good idea to sign T.O. to a 2-3 year deal as a bridge to a rookie WR pick?

Think about it: T.O. still has game. Sure, he's slipped over the past few years, but he would be better than putting a rookie in and just hoping for the best. He's not the dominate force that he once was, and he's not going to be a #1 receiver, but he could be a great #2 on the opposite side of Smitty.

I know he has problems getting along with teammates (especially quarterbacks), but in most cases his gripes come when his team isn't playing well (or when he isn't getting the ball). Do you guys think he is worth the risk? He may be a locker room distraction from time to time, but he has never done anything illegal or given any problems other than the occasional whining that most primadonna receivers in the league give.

I think he might be worth a look. Anyone who has thoughts on the matter feel free to add them in the comments.

No, he's too big of a distraction to even consider it.

I chose no, but being a "distraction" is not really a heavy concern

richardson likes wholesome guys, so I don’t think he’d sign him anyways… but there are more pressing reasons

1) he’s getting old and for 2-3 years I have trouble believing we’ll get what we paid for
2) the 2-3 year bridge time may be wasted if we haven’t solved our QB question
3) this reason is more personal and a gut feeling, but we should be drafting a WR first and I feel confident that the FO will choose someone that can start immediately and make an impact

Those are valid points...

I don’t think they WILL sign him, but I think he would be worth looking at if the price were right.

There are very few wideouts who are ready to step in and contribute right away.

Even in our very recent history, the Panthers’ past is littered with young draftees that merely flashed potential and faded away, or never did anything at all. Hell, even second-rounders Keary Colbert and Dwayne Jarrett have barely combined for a season’s worth of good games.

I voted No..

Like I jokingly mentioned in another post.. Smith gets banned for 6 games for breaking TO’s face in 6 different locations then T.O. sits out to allow his face to heal and we’re stuck with no receiving threat.

It’s a joke but can anyone say it wouldn’t have a chance of happening when T.O. gets his ’I’m the best player on this team, give me the ball’ on?

Call me crazy...

but I think that T.O. and Smitty would actually work well together. They both want the ball because they want to win, and I think that as long as they are winning they would be cool with sharing the ball.

Muhammad

What does TO offer that Muhammad doesn’t? I think we would be better off extending Muhammad for a couple years to do the same job. Both are on the back end of their career but Muhammad has 12 years in the Panther system. I will give it to you that TO is probably a little better. But why risk it?

by Justinrl on Jan 4, 2010 12:07 AM EST reply actions

Other than being a little better...

He doesn’t offer much more than Moose does. I’m assuming that Moose retires or chooses to sign elsewhere in the offseason.

not retiring

Moose already said he is playing next season and hopes its in a carolina uniform

And Muhammad also plays even if he's not the #1 target on a play.

You’d go from the best outside blocking in the league to no outside blocking whatsoever.

I don't really see how T.O would work.

He’s a walking time bomb that not only destroys teams, but actually made his team worse by taking receptions away from their true threat, Lee Evans.

You really want to couple that energy with (potentially) a young starting QB in Matt Moore and a true competitor in Steve Smith?

Something tells me combining Smitty (who wants to get the ball to help his team win) and Owens (who wants to get the ball to make himself look good) is a recipe for disaster. The vast improvement in Dallas this season should show you what T.O does to a team.

FTFY

The vast improvement in Dallas this season everywhere Owens leaves should show you what T.O does to a team.

I certainly haven't heard any SF teammates calling each other gay since he left.

And they missed the playoffs his last season there, so it’s not like they’ve gotten much worse.

49ers issues had more to do with Jeff Garcia leaving and them starting Tim Rattay in 2004 than T.O leaving.

that has more to do with Garcia leaving

and Mike Nolan coming in.

Fair enough...

I just felt it at least warranted a discussion. I’m not endorsing that we go out and throw a 5 year deal his way … I just thought it would be interesting to see what other people thought of the possibility of signing him.

by BW Smith on Jan 4, 2010 10:16 AM EST up reply actions

I'm glad you put the discussion out there bwsmith25

On paper it doesn’t seem like too far of a stretch given that Hurney and co. took a chance on Keyshawn Johnson, but in reality with Owens at 36 years old and Moose at 36 you have one guy in Owens who is more of a passing threat, but Moose is a far better blocker and ultimately the key to our success is the run.

So why not take the money you would spend on Owens and extend Moose whose a known quantity?

by James Dator on Jan 4, 2010 10:36 AM EST up reply actions

When I posted this...

I didn’t know that Moose said he wanted to come back. I thought he was going to retire.

Given the choice between the two I would definitely pick Moose, if for nothing but sentimental value.

by BW Smith on Jan 4, 2010 10:53 AM EST up reply actions

And if the Keyshawn experiment is the example you point to...

Then they don’t want to touch Owens with a 30-foot pole.

young blood needed

TO has put on his best behaviour this year, but that does not mean the Panthers need to get him. We need young talent that can compliment Steve Smith for the next couple of years and then begin to take on the primary WR position.
Possible candidates are Lance Moore (NO Saints) Steve Breston (Cardinals) or Vincent Jackson(Chargers). All 3 of them are FA next year. All 3 of them are no problem WRs, have 700+ yards this year and will compliment Steve Smith perfectly.

Malcolm Floyd?

I’ve liked this guy for a long time, he’s very similar to V-Jack. Big deep threat. I also think Kevin Walter or Jason Avant would be good fits, Avant moreso if Moose retires.

I'd like Walter a lot.

Plus there’s the fact that he’s unrestricted. That’s a pretty rare commodity in this year’s market.

All those guys are gonna be RFAs, though...

That’ll probably mean that we’d have to fork over picks and a decent-sized contract to get any of them on board.

Which is why Kevin Walter is a great option

There is some bias because he was my only legit WR a couple seasons ago, but still. The man has good hands, he is a deep threat although he isn’t that fast. He runs great routes, and he can block. Plus he’s Fox’s type of blue collar player.
